For the current PC release, the old DX11-versus-DX12 choice no longer applies: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026, uses native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading. If you are playing an earlier build that offers both APIs, neither is guaranteed to run faster on every PC; compare them on your own system under matched conditions.
Does the current Witcher 3 PC release let you choose DX11 or DX12?
No. CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, and its feature announcement describes the PC game as using native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading. The launcher choice between DX11 and DX12 belongs to earlier versions that offered both modes, not the current Remastered release. CD PROJEKT RED’s release notice and its Remastered feature announcement establish that version context.

The publisher says the game now has native DX12 rendering with multithreading for better performance and visuals. That is a feature description, not a measured promise that every PC will achieve a higher frame rate.
Which API runs better in earlier builds?
There is no universal winner established for earlier builds. CD PROJEKT RED warns that expected frame rates vary with the scene, PC configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. Results from one computer—or a benchmark with different settings—cannot reliably predict yours.

#1 Best Overall
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
Also, the older DX11 renderer did not offer the same feature set as DX12 in the next-gen update: the publisher said DX11 lacked ray tracing and general graphical improvements introduced with that update. Consequently, a comparison using the same preset name may not compare identical visuals or rendering features. CD PROJEKT RED’s forum statement on the historical API differences supports this limitation.
How to compare DX11 and DX12 on your own PC
If your installed older build offers both modes, test the exact version you intend to keep using. Change only the API between runs and keep the rest of the test as consistent as possible.
- Record the build and patch. Note the game version, graphics driver, and API mode. Patch matters: for example, the official Patch 4.01 notes, dated February 2, 2023, include PC fixes and a ray-traced global-illumination performance mode.
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use the same saved location and repeat the same route or actions. Avoid comparing a quiet village in one run with a busy combat scene in another.
- Match the relevant settings. Keep output resolution, comparable graphics options, ray tracing state, upscaling mode, and frame generation consistent where the options exist. Since older DX11 and DX12 modes may not expose identical features, document any setting that cannot be matched rather than treating the runs as equivalent.
- Measure more than a brief peak. Record average FPS across the same interval. If your tools allow it, assess frame-time consistency separately and note stutter, crashes, or other instability; one average can hide those differences.
- Repeat each run. Re-run the same scene in each API mode to reduce the influence of one-off fluctuations. Choose the mode that gives you the better balance of performance and stability in your own play, not a result from a different PC.
What the official FPS figures do—and do not—tell you
CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements page lists expected performance targets by hardware tier, resolution, preset, and feature configuration. The publisher says these targets are based on QA tests and cautions that actual performance can vary by scene, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. They are targets for specified configurations, not a head-to-head DX11-versus-DX12 benchmark.
The page also qualifies its ray-tracing and path-tracing figures: those configurations use DLSS, FSR, or XeSS set to Auto, and the path-tracing configuration also enables frame generation. Consult the live requirements table for the current hardware tiers and configuration details rather than reading its targets as proof that one API is faster.

Does an SSD or a newer GPU settle the API question?
SSD
CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements and notes benefits for loading and asset streaming. That makes storage relevant to meeting the current release’s requirements, but it does not establish which renderer produces more FPS. If your PC still uses an HDD, check compatibility before upgrading; an SSD is not an API-performance fix.
Graphics card
A more capable GPU may matter if you are targeting higher resolutions, ray tracing, or path tracing, or if your own measurements show a GPU bottleneck. The publisher’s requirements distinguish hardware tiers for these configurations, but there is no single GPU recommendation that follows from the DX11-versus-DX12 question alone.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each version
- Remastered: use the current release’s native DX12 renderer; the older launcher comparison is not the relevant choice.
- An earlier build with both APIs: test DX11 and DX12 under matched, documented conditions. Expect results to depend on the scene and your hardware, and account for differences in supported features.
- Ray tracing in an older next-gen build: DX11 is not an equivalent option because the historical DX11 renderer did not support ray tracing.
