You can run a private AI chatbot on your own computer with a desktop app such as LM Studio or Jan, or host a chat interface such as Open WebUI connected to a local model server such as Ollama. The key privacy question is not which interface you use; it is where the model and every supporting service process your data. Local inference can keep prompts on your hardware, but cloud models, search, document-processing tools, and other integrations may still send information elsewhere.
What “run locally” means for privacy
A local model runs inference on hardware you control. A cloud model processes your prompt and any included context at a hosted endpoint. A local chat screen does not guarantee local processing: the application may be configured to use a cloud model or connect to remote services.
Check the full path taken by the conversation, including any files or context attached to it. In Open WebUI, for example, the selected endpoint determines where inference occurs; choosing a cloud endpoint sends the prompt and included context to that provider. Comparing responses across multiple models can send the same prompt to each selected endpoint. Open WebUI’s documentation describes these endpoint distinctions.
- Model endpoint: Verify whether the selected model is running on your machine or hosted by a provider.
- Tools and integrations: Search, speech services, and other connected tools can introduce separate data paths.
- Document chat: Retrieval may involve extraction, embeddings, or reranking components. Confirm that those components also run locally if the documents are sensitive.
- Accounts and infrastructure: External identity providers, remote storage, logs, and backups can expose information independently of the model.
Local chatbot options

|---|---|---|
| LM Studio | Desktop app for downloading and running models; supports local chat and document retrieval. | Its documentation says downloaded models can be used offline. Model discovery, model and runtime downloads, and update checks require network connections. LM Studio’s June 2026 privacy policy says locally run messages, histories, and documents stay on the device; cloud features, including cloud models and web search, process requests transiently. These are the company’s documentation and policy claims, not independent audit findings. Documentation · Privacy policy |
| Jan | Desktop apps for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with offline support and a local OpenAI-compatible API server. | Jan’s documentation also describes cloud integrations in its wider ecosystem. Check the selected provider and enabled features for each sensitive workflow. Documentation |
| Ollama + Open WebUI | Ollama runs and serves local models; Open WebUI provides a self-hosted chat interface. | Open WebUI can connect to cloud endpoints as well as local ones, so select and verify the local model. Ollama’s privacy policy says content processed locally is not collected, stored, transmitted, or accessible to Ollama; that statement applies to local processing, not cloud-hosted models or other connected services. Open WebUI documentation · Ollama privacy policy |
| Open WebUI with another local server | Open WebUI documents connections to servers including llama.cpp and vLLM, as well as other OpenAI-compatible local servers. | vLLM is described for high-throughput production workloads. These server options can suit users with specific deployment needs; people who do not want to administer a server may prefer a desktop app. Open WebUI documentation |
The available product documentation describes features, but does not establish a controlled comparison of usability, speed, or model quality among these options. It also does not establish comparative minimum RAM or VRAM, hardware costs, or independent verification of vendor privacy claims.

Choose a setup that fits your workflow
For straightforward personal use
Start with LM Studio or Jan if you want a desktop application rather than a self-hosted web interface. Download a model while connected, then test ordinary chat with the network disconnected if offline use matters. For LM Studio, downloaded models support offline chat and local document retrieval according to its documentation; discovery and downloads still require connectivity. LM Studio documentation
For a self-hosted interface
Use Open WebUI with a local inference server such as Ollama when you want to manage the interface and model connection yourself. Select the local model and inspect configured services rather than assuming the interface makes every request local. Test document retrieval separately from ordinary chat because its supporting components may have different requirements.

For a fully disconnected Open WebUI deployment
Plan and stage the dependencies before disconnecting. Open WebUI’s offline tutorial calls for preparing the inference service, model files, embeddings and extraction components as needed, persistent caches, and any speech dependencies you plan to use. Its offline settings reduce certain update and download behaviors; they do not block outbound network requests. The tutorial is a community contribution and is not supported by the Open WebUI team. What self-hosting makes your responsibility
Self-hosting gives you control over where the server runs and how its database, storage, model connections, logs, and backups are managed. It does not automatically secure those systems. Open WebUI’s security guidance recommends measures such as encrypted storage, TLS, access restrictions, temporary chats, limiting sensitive uploads, restricting tools, and using local or private model endpoints for sensitive prompts. - Restrict who can access the interface and the machine hosting it.
- Protect stored conversations, uploaded files, databases, and backups.
- Limit tools and integrations to those you need, and review where each sends data.
- Use network controls if you need to prevent outbound connections. Open WebUI warns that its offline settings alone do not do this; controls may include firewall rules, container-network restrictions, or physical isolation.
A practical privacy check before sharing sensitive information
- Choose the model endpoint. Confirm that the selected model is local, not a cloud model or an endpoint that forwards prompts to a provider.
- Review enabled services. Check search, tools, speech, identity providers, and any other integrations involved in the workflow.
- Test document chat separately. Verify whether extraction, embeddings, and reranking are local, especially before uploading sensitive files.
- Check where data persists. Review chat history, temporary-chat behavior, storage, logs, and backups.
- Test offline if needed. Disconnect from the network and confirm the tasks you need still work. For a genuinely disconnected setup, stage required models, packages, caches, and supporting components first.
- Apply network controls for stronger isolation. Use appropriate host or network restrictions; an app’s offline mode is not necessarily a network block.
Storage and hardware considerations
Model files and persistent application caches use local storage. An external SSD may be useful if you do not have enough internal space, but the cited product documentation does not establish a required capacity or that an external drive is necessary. Hardware requirements and performance depend on the model and configuration; the available sources do not provide a comparative minimum RAM or VRAM specification.
