Yes, renewable energy can supply a substantial share of an AI data centre’s electricity, but a renewable contract alone cannot guarantee reliable, clean power in every hour. Continuous operation depends on the site’s grid, the timing of its electricity demand and renewable output, available storage and firm power, and how much computing demand can be shifted. A specific facility’s reliability cannot be established from global averages; it requires local, hourly evidence.
How much of data-centre electricity comes from renewables?
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that renewables supplied about 27% of global data-centre electricity consumption in its 2025 analysis. That estimate describes the physical electricity mix consumed, including on-site generation and grid electricity—not operators’ contractual purchases. The same modeled mix attributed about 30% to coal, 26% to natural gas and 15% to nuclear. These are global estimates, not a description of every country or facility. IEA, Energy and AI: Energy supply for AI
In that analysis, renewables are projected to meet nearly half of data-centre electricity-demand growth from 2024 to 2030. That is a share of the increase, not a forecast that renewables will supply half of all data-centre electricity by 2030. Coal and gas together are projected to meet over 40% of additional demand in the same period. The outlook therefore points to rapid renewable growth, alongside continued fossil-fuel use. IEA, Energy and AI: Energy supply for AI
The IEA’s 2026 update projects global data-centre electricity consumption at 485 TWh in 2025 and roughly 950 TWh in 2030; it projects AI-focused data-centre consumption to triple over that period. These are global projections, not measurements or forecasts for a particular facility. IEA, Key Questions on Energy and AI: Executive summary, published 16 April 2026

What “reliably powered by renewables” can mean
Annual clean-energy matching
A company may buy or contract for a volume of renewable electricity over a year. Such agreements can support clean-energy projects, but an annual total does not show that renewable generation matched the data centre’s consumption in each hour. Nor does it, by itself, guarantee that electricity from a contracted project physically reached the facility. The electricity a site actually consumes comes through its local system, whose generation mix changes over time. The IEA distinguishes that physical mix from operators’ contractual mix. IEA, Energy and AI: Energy supply for AI
Hourly clean-energy matching
Matching supply and demand hour by hour is a more demanding operational and accounting goal. It requires a plan for periods when local renewable output is low or the data centre’s load is high, as well as a clear way to account for any unmatched hours. A facility can remain reliably powered by drawing on the wider grid or other firm resources while its hourly electricity is not fully renewable.

Google describes its goal as a company ambition: “Ultimately, our moonshot is to power our operations with carbon-free energy, every hour of every day, on every grid where we operate.” The statement describes an aim, not proof that the goal has been achieved. Google also reports signing agreements for over 12 GW of net-new clean energy in 2025. Its figure includes power-purchase agreements, energy-storage agreements and agreements involving environmental-attribute certificates; actual generation can differ from contracted amounts. It is a company-reported procurement figure, not evidence of hourly physical supply to its data centres. Google Data Centers, Operating sustainably
What a reliable clean-power portfolio can include
No single resource has to do every job. A practical supply plan combines resources and measures suited to the site’s grid, demand pattern and reliability target. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identifies clean generation, grid infrastructure, efficiency, storage, demand resources, and existing hydropower and nuclear among the options; it also points to next-generation geothermal and nuclear development. Their availability and delivery timelines vary by location and project. DOE, Clean Energy Resources to Meet Data Center Electricity Demand

Complementary generation and a capable grid
Wind, solar, hydropower and other resources have different output patterns. Connecting to a broader power system can help balance those patterns, but the benefit depends on local generation, transmission capacity and the ability to interconnect new supply. Renewable projects elsewhere do not automatically resolve a constraint on the lines serving a particular site.
Storage matched to the job
Batteries can respond quickly to load changes and shift electricity across periods of mismatch. What matters is both their power and how long they can discharge, alongside when and how they are charged. The necessary size and duration depend on the hourly load and local supply; the cited sources do not establish a universal battery design for data centres.

The IEA estimates that data centres could account for 20–25 GW of battery-storage installations globally by 2030. This is potential deployment, not a confirmed installed total or a specification for an individual site. With suitable incentives, the IEA says data-centre storage could help make facilities a grid asset. IEA, Key Questions on Energy and AI: Executive summary, published 16 April 2026
Firm low-emissions power
Some periods may require electricity that is available regardless of weather or the time of day. DOE identifies existing hydropower and nuclear as part of the clean-power landscape, alongside development of next-generation geothermal and nuclear. Whether any of these can serve a specific project depends on local access, project timing and other site conditions; their inclusion in a portfolio is not a claim that they are available everywhere. Efficiency and flexible computing
Efficiency can reduce electricity needs, while some workloads may be scheduled or shifted toward periods with stronger clean supply or less grid stress. Demand response can also help in suitable circumstances. The scope for these measures depends on the computing task and the facility’s technical and commercial constraints; not every workload can be interrupted or moved freely. DOE includes efficiency and demand resources among its options, and Google says it uses demand response and flexibility when possible. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why AI demand and grid connections complicate the picture
AI training and model use can create large, rapid changes in data-centre power demand, according to the IEA. A supply plan must account for changing load, not just an average consumption figure. Storage and flexible workloads may help manage some swings, but they do not eliminate the need to assess local grid capacity and firm supply. IEA, Key Questions on Energy and AI: Executive summary, published 16 April 2026
Grid connection queues, transmission bottlenecks and supply-chain constraints can also affect how quickly new capacity reaches a site. The IEA identifies flexibility options such as non-firm connections and demand response for suitable cases. These are project-specific arrangements, not substitutes for checking whether the grid can meet the facility’s required service level. IEA, Key Questions on Energy and AI: Executive summary, published 16 April 2026
How to assess a specific data centre’s claim
Ask for evidence that links the clean-power claim to the facility’s location, load and time period. Useful questions include:
- Where and when? What region and grid does the claim cover, and is matching measured annually, hourly or at another interval?
- What is being counted? Does the claim concern physical electricity delivery, a contractual purchase or environmental attributes?
- How is new supply connected? Are the projects operating, and can their output reach the site given interconnection and transmission limits?
- What happens in unmatched periods? Which grid resources, storage, firm supply or backup arrangements serve the load?
- How much flexibility is real? What are the storage power and discharge duration, and which workloads can actually move or respond?
- How is performance reported? Are the accounting method, unmatched hours and results independently reported?
To assess operational reliability rather than a broad procurement claim, a site-specific analysis needs the region and grid operator, hourly and peak demand, local renewable-generation profiles, interconnection and transmission limits, storage power and duration, firm-supply or backup arrangements, demand-response capability and required reliability target. Without those details, neither a global average nor an annual renewable contract establishes the facility’s hourly supply or outage resilience.
