If a stereo receiver has no sound, crackles, distorts, or cuts out, start with power, input, mute, volume, and speaker connections. Then compare another source and test whether the fault follows a speaker or stays on the receiver channel. These checks can narrow down the cause without opening the receiver; turn it off before changing speaker wiring, and use the manual for model-specific settings.

Start with the simple operating checks

A wrong input or disabled output can look like a hardware failure. Check the complete path from the source to the receiver and speakers:

  • Make sure the receiver and source device are powered on, and confirm that the source is actually playing.
  • Select the receiver input connected to that source.
  • Cancel mute and raise the volume from minimum.
  • Unplug any headphones and verify that the speaker output you want to hear is enabled. Speaker selector names and controls vary by model.
  • Check that the cables are seated securely at both the source and receiver.

These are common first checks in Sony’s input-specific no-sound guidance and its low- or no-sound receiver troubleshooting, as well as the Denon AVR-X550BT manual. Exact controls and menu paths depend on the receiver.

Find out whether the problem affects one source, one channel, or everything

Note the scope before changing several things at once. Try another source, and another receiver input if available. If the alternate source works, investigate the original source’s output settings, cable, and input selection before suspecting the receiver. A TV or set-top box may need its audio output configured; the Denon AVR-X550BT manual also calls out digital audio input and output settings for that model.

Sony STRDH190 2-ch Home Stereo Receiver with Phono Inputs & Bluetooth Black
  • Amplify and enjoy your home audio experience in the comfort of your home.Frequency band : 2,400 MHz – 2,483.5 MHz, Maximum output power : ≤ 5.0 dBm..Connector Type: ‎Bluetooth
  • 100 watts x 2 (8 ohms, 1 Kilo Hertz). Speaker impedance - 6–16 ohms
  • Phono input, 4 stereo RCA audio inputs, 3.5 millimeter input, stereo RCA output
  • Built in Bluetooth lets you wirelessly stream your favorite music service, podcasts, and more from other Bluetooth devices.
  • Connect up to 4 speakers; A/B switching to play all at once, or in separate zones

If only one speaker or channel is affected, check the receiver’s balance setting and inspect that channel’s speaker lead. Loose or damaged wire can cause silence, crackling, intermittent sound, or protection behavior. Turn off the receiver before touching the wiring.

Check for speaker-wire and connection faults

With the receiver off, inspect the speaker wire at both ends. Look for loose connections, damage, pinching, frayed strands, or exposed conductor that could touch another terminal or the receiver chassis. Reconnect the lead securely, ensuring that stray strands do not bridge terminals. Sony’s speaker-wire and connection guidance discusses faulty wiring as a possible cause; its model-specific impedance note should not be applied to other receivers.

If the lead looks unreliable or the sound changes when it is moved, try a known-good wire or replace the suspect lead. Choose wire suitable for the receiver and installation, using the owner’s manual for the model’s requirements rather than assuming one gauge or length fits every setup.

Use a speaker swap to help locate a one-channel fault

When practical, compare left and right sides by swapping their receiver connections while the receiver is off. Then power it on at low volume and see where the symptom appears. Sony recommends this comparison in its popping, crackling, or fuzzy sound guidance.

  • If the problem moves with the speaker, suspect that speaker or its wire. Replacing the wire can help distinguish a lead fault from a speaker fault.
  • If it stays with the same receiver channel, the receiver may need service.

This is a useful clue, not a definitive component test. Avoid changing connections while the receiver is powered.

Reduce distortion and investigate intermittent sound

For distortion

Lower the volume first. If distortion occurs only at high playback levels, check whether a receiver setting is contributing. On the Denon AVR-X550BT, the manual says audio may distort at high volume when ECO Mode is On or Auto and advises setting ECO Mode to Off. That advice is specific to this model; consult your own receiver’s manual rather than looking for the same setting on every receiver.

For crackling or sound that cuts in and out

Check that speaker leads are firmly connected and that no strands touch another terminal or the receiver chassis. Try another source to see whether the noise is tied to one device or input. If practical, compare with known-good speaker wire or speakers. Keep speaker wire away from electrical cords if the guidance for your model recommends doing so. Make one change at a time and retest so you can tell what affected the symptom.

Respond carefully to protection mode or shutdowns

A receiver that shuts down or signals protection needs more caution than one with a wrong input selected. Switch it off. Follow the exact manual’s instructions before inspecting wiring, and disconnect power if the manual directs you to do so. Do not repeatedly power-cycle a unit that immediately returns to protection.

For the AVR-X550BT, Denon’s manual associates protection behavior with overheating or speaker-wire contact and describes model-specific red-flash patterns: slower flashing for internal heat and faster flashing for speaker-wire contact. Its guidance for heat includes allowing the receiver to cool and improving ventilation; the manual directs users to contact customer service for suspected amplifier circuit failure. Those indicators and procedures are not universal. If protection persists, use the manual for your model and seek qualified service.

Know when to stop troubleshooting

If the receiver still fails after checking operating states, sources, connections, and speaker wiring—or if it repeatedly shuts down—stop testing and consult the model’s service guidance. The archived Denon AVR-687 owner’s manual puts the escalation plainly: “Should the problem persist, there may be a malfunction.” That statement applies to that model’s manual; service options and procedures vary by model and region.
