A properly sized window air conditioner is generally cheaper to run than a portable AC when both are practical options for the room. The likely advantage comes from category-level efficiency evidence—not a guarantee about every model. To estimate your own cost, compare appropriately sized units using their energy data, your electricity rate, and the hours you expect to run them.

Why a window AC is usually the lower-cost choice

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains that a portable AC sits inside the cooled space and sends hot air outside through an exhaust duct. A room AC, by contrast, is mounted in a window or through a wall. In its 2021 rulemaking analysis, DOE reported expected Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER) ranges of 4–8 Btu/Wh for portable ACs and 9–15 Btu/Wh for room ACs. That category-level comparison points toward lower electricity use for room units, but it is not a current, model-by-model comparison or a promise that every window AC will beat every portable unit. DOE’s 2021 rulemaking analysis

DOE defines a room air conditioner as a unit “designed as a unit for mounting in a window or through the wall for the purpose of providing delivery of conditioned air to an enclosed space.” A portable AC is a different product category, and its indoor exhaust duct is part of the practical comparison—not just a difference in appearance. How to estimate what each unit will cost you

Use the same estimated operating hours and local electricity price for both units. If you know a unit’s power draw, calculate its approximate energy cost as:

Cost = power draw in kilowatts × operating hours × electricity price per kilowatt-hour

For example, a unit drawing 0.8 kW and running for 500 hours at $0.20 per kWh would use about $80 worth of electricity (0.8 × 500 × $0.20). This is an illustration of the calculation, not a prediction for a particular AC; actual consumption can vary with the unit, room conditions, thermostat setting, and cycling.

Compare the energy information for the specific products, not just their advertised cooling capacity. DOE has separate test procedures for portable ACs and room ACs, so check that you are interpreting each product’s rating in the context of its category rather than treating unlike ratings as directly interchangeable. What an official room-AC example can—and cannot—tell you

The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) illustrates differences between two 12,000 Btu/h room ACs: an ENERGY STAR example rated CEER 14.7 with estimated annual use of 612 kWh, and a less-efficient example rated CEER 10.9 with estimated annual use of 826 kWh. Its annual cost figures—$67 and $91—assume 750 operating hours per year and electricity at 11.1 cents per kWh, which FEMP identifies as the average price at federal facilities in the United States as of July 2024. These are example room-AC figures, not a portable-versus-window test or a household bill estimate. FEMP’s room air conditioner guidance

Choose a capacity that fits the room

Efficiency alone does not determine the bill: the AC also needs to be an appropriate size for the space. FEMP warns that oversizing can raise purchase cost and increase energy consumption. An oversized unit may also cool the room quickly, switch on and off frequently, and remove less humidity. FEMP’s sizing and efficiency guidance

There is no reliable capacity recommendation from “small room” alone. Room dimensions, sunlight, insulation, climate, and other heat loads matter. Check sizing guidance for the actual space rather than choosing solely by the largest Btu/h number in a listing.

When a portable AC may be the practical option

A portable unit can make sense if a window AC cannot be installed—for example, because of building or lease restrictions, an unsuitable window, or the inability to mount the unit safely. Confirm the portable model’s exhaust arrangement and that the window or other permitted opening can be sealed as directed. A portable AC may solve an installation problem even if category-level efficiency evidence favors room units.

Before deciding, check window dimensions and installation requirements, along with any landlord or building rules. For either type, compare the total purchase and installation burden separately from electricity cost; a lower running cost does not by itself settle which option is workable for your home.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Running cost: Use each specific model’s energy information, the same expected hours, and your local electricity price.
  • Rating: Check the efficiency and energy data appropriate to that appliance category and its test procedure.
  • Room fit: Select capacity for the room and avoid oversizing.
  • Installation: Verify window fit, safe mounting, sealing, and building or rental restrictions.
  • Up-front burden: Compare purchase price and installation needs separately from electricity use.
