There is no officially validated “best” preset for System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. On PC, start with a display mode your screen and system support, then tune visual effects and controls for your hardware and comfort. On controller, adjust turning sensitivity, dead zones, and aim-slowing to suit your play style. Nightdive’s published 4K and 120Hz statements apply only to specific Xbox models—not to every platform.

What the remaster changes—and what that means for settings

Nightdive describes a modernized version of the original game’s 3D renderer, with high-resolution assets, modern materials and shaders, ambient occlusion support, and work to address older renderer bottlenecks. Those are feature descriptions, not a benchmark, a promise of a particular frame rate, or a guarantee that maximum effects are best on every system. In its March 20, 2025 Xbox Wire interview, Nightdive developer Lexi Mayfield said the renderer had been modernized and ambient occlusion was supported.

Choose graphics settings by platform

Xbox One X and Xbox Series X|S

Nightdive developer Lexi Mayfield told Xbox Wire that the game runs natively at 4K on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X|S, and that Xbox Series X|S supports 120Hz. These are capabilities stated for those named Xbox models; they are not comparative performance results and should not be extended to Xbox One, PC, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch. The Xbox Wire interview does not establish a recommended graphics preset for other platforms.

PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch

For PC, select a resolution and refresh rate supported by both your display and system. Then adjust available image effects according to the balance you prefer between appearance and smoothness. Ambient occlusion is a supported renderer feature, but Nightdive’s cited description does not specify an ideal on/off setting or its performance cost. No official tested PC preset, GPU requirement, FPS target, or comparative benchmark is provided in the cited sources. On PlayStation and Switch, check the graphics options available in your installed version rather than assuming the Xbox figures apply.

#1 Best Overall
System Shock 2 Remastered NS
  • Cross-Play Co-Op multiplayer.
  • Choose from 3 branches of the Military; O.S.A, Marines or Navy and experiment with different play styles.
  • Up to 120 FPS performance with ultra-widescreen support.
  • 50 Trophies to unlock.
  • Enhanced Characters, Weapon Models and Animations. Optimized Controller support. Quality of Life improvements.

Find a controller setup that feels right

The remaster supports controller interface navigation and offers remapping for nearly every control; analog-stick looking and walking are the stated exceptions. A southpaw option swaps the sticks. Quick-access bars are assigned to the bumpers by default, and aiming can be slowed for accuracy. The game also uses one lean toggle, with the control stick determining lean direction. These options make controller play configurable, but they do not establish one objectively best layout. Nightdive described the features in its Xbox Wire interview.

Tune turning sensitivity and dead zones

Use turning sensitivity to control how quickly the view responds, then adjust dead zones if small stick movements cause unwanted drift or fail to register comfortably. The right balance depends on the controller and player; the official sources do not identify an ideal value for everyone.

System Shock 2 Remastered PS5
  • Cross-Play Co-Op multiplayer.
  • Choose from 3 branches of the Military; O.S.A, Marines or Navy and experiment with different play styles.
  • Up to 120 FPS performance with ultra-widescreen support.
  • 50 Trophies to unlock.
  • Enhanced Characters, Weapon Models and Animations. Optimized Controller support. Quality of Life improvements.

For PC, Nightdive’s June 27, 2025 Patch 1.0.1 notes changed the default controller turning sensitivity from 1.0 to 1.5 and the default dead zone from 0.1/0.1 to 0.24/0.265. These are defaults reported for that PC patch, not verified current defaults across platforms or later updates. Consult the Patch 1.0.1 notes and the options in your installed game before relying on those values.

Keep aim-slowing if precision matters

Nightdive says aiming can be slowed for accuracy. Try it if you want more control while lining up a shot; whether it feels helpful is a personal preference, not an official performance recommendation.

Keep or remap the default quick-access controls

The bumpers use the quick-access bars by default. Keep that arrangement if it is easy to reach while moving and aiming; otherwise, use the remapping options to find a layout that works for your hands and preferred stick arrangement.

Mouse and keyboard or controller?

Nightdive confirms support for both keyboard and mouse and controller. Its cited interview does not provide a recommended mouse sensitivity or keybind layout, nor a direct test comparing the input methods. Choose based on platform, comfort, and whether you prefer mouse aiming or controller access to the remaster’s menu and quick-access controls. There is no evidence here that one input method is universally faster or more accurate.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Set a supported display mode. On PC, match resolution and refresh rate to your display and system. On console, use the options available for your model; Nightdive’s cited native 4K and 120Hz claims are limited to the Xbox models specified above.
  2. Adjust effects by preference. Try the available visual options, including ambient occlusion where offered, and keep the balance that looks good while remaining smooth on your hardware.
  3. Check controller defaults in your version. If using a controller on PC, compare its turning sensitivity and dead zones with the Patch 1.0.1 defaults, while accounting for possible later changes.
  4. Test aiming and access. Try aim-slowing, the default bumper quick-access bars, and the lean toggle. Remap controls or switch to southpaw if that improves comfort.
  5. Choose the input method you prefer. Keyboard and mouse and controller are both supported; no official head-to-head test establishes a winner.
