To use GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2, update the console, meet Nintendo’s account, internet, and membership requirements, then press the C Button and follow the setup prompts. You can invite friends only after you and each friend have completed setup and approved one another.
What you need before setting up GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with the latest system update installed.
- A Nintendo Account and a registered phone number for verification.
- A persistent internet connection and a completed GameChat connection test.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s open-access period ended March 31, 2026; availability and service requirements can vary by country. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online membership FAQ and GameChat Guide and FAQ.
Users under 16 also need a parent or guardian to set up the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and approve GameChat use. Nintendo’s parental controls guide for GameChat explains the process.
Set up GameChat for the first time
- Press the C Button on your Switch 2 to open GameChat, then follow the on-screen setup prompts.
- Review the GameChat information and terms, and accept them to continue.
- When prompted, verify the registered phone number using the code Nintendo sends by text message.
- Select the friends you want to approve for GameChat. They must approve you from their own consoles as well.
- Complete the remaining prompts, including the network connection test.

Approve friends and invite them to a room
GameChat invitations are limited to friends, and approval must be mutual. Adding or approving someone on your console alone does not enable an invitation: the other person must approve you and finish their own GameChat setup too. Nintendo describes the mutual approval process in its guide to approving friends for GameChat.

- Choose the approved friends you want to invite.
- Your friends can respond to the on-screen invitation by pressing the C Button or HOME button.
- To invite additional friends after the room has started, open GameChat settings in the room and select them, subject to the participant limit.
If an invitation does not appear, check that both players have completed setup, are friends, and have approved each other. Also verify internet connectivity, system software, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo notes that network conditions and physical distance can delay invitations or chat connections.
Use voice chat or add a camera for video
The Switch 2’s built-in microphone supports voice chat, so a separate microphone is not required for basic GameChat. Video is optional and requires a compatible USB camera. Nintendo’s dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one option; Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility for third-party USB cameras. You can check a camera with the console’s Test USB Camera feature in system settings.

GameChat room and sharing limits

For a user under 16, a parent or guardian must configure Nintendo Switch Parental Controls through the smart-device app and approve GameChat, including which friends the child may chat with. Nintendo says the parent or guardian’s account phone number is used for the child’s verification messages. Nintendo says GameChat content, including voice and video, is temporarily recorded and stored on the consoles involved. If someone submits a report, the last three minutes may be made available with that report. See Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ for its explanation of recording and reporting.
