Yamaha rates the receiver at 100 W + 100 W into 8 ohms under a specific test condition; that figure does not establish its minimum speaker impedance. Check the manual before using four speakers on A+B, too.
What speakers work with the Yamaha R200A?
The R200A is a two-channel stereo receiver, so a conventional passive stereo pair is the straightforward choice for ordinary listening. Yamaha lists A/B speaker selection and support for up to four speakers, but the published product information does not give the impedance rules for operating A and B together.

Yamaha’s current specifications rate the receiver at 100 W + 100 W at 8 ohms, from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, at 0.2% THD. This describes rated output under those conditions; it is not a minimum-impedance specification, a recommended speaker-power target, or a promise that every speaker rated for a particular wattage is safe at any volume. Yamaha also lists dynamic power of 125/150/165/180 W per channel at 8/6/4/2 ohms, respectively. Those dynamic-power figures are distinct from continuous rated output and do not establish a minimum compatible speaker impedance. Yamaha R200A specifications.
Check impedance before comparing models
Look up the nominal impedance of each speaker and compare it with the minimum impedance permitted by the manual for your exact receiver. Yamaha’s product pages do not settle that minimum. An 8-ohm passive speaker is a reasonable starting point for comparisons because Yamaha publishes its rated-output condition at 8 ohms, but do not treat that as proof that 8 ohms is the receiver’s minimum requirement.

If you plan to use Speaker A and Speaker B at the same time—whether in one room or across two spaces—find the manual’s separate A+B loading instructions before purchasing. The R200A overview confirms A/B operation and up to four speakers, but does not specify the impedance condition for that setup. Yamaha R200A product overview.
Compare speakers for your room and listening habits
Sensitivity and listening level
Compare sensitivity when you have a large room, sit far from the speakers, or listen at higher levels. The receiver’s power rating alone cannot predict loudness: room size, listening distance, speaker sensitivity, and the level you choose all matter. Match the speakers to your use rather than assuming a higher power-handling number will sound better or protect the receiver.

Cabinet size and placement
Bookshelf speakers may suit shelves or stands and rooms with limited floor space. Floorstanding speakers use more space and may be worth considering if larger cabinets fit your room. These are general placement considerations, not Yamaha-tested pairings for the R200A.

Listen for the qualities that matter to you—such as vocal balance, bass weight, and detail—using familiar music. No product-specific speaker comparisons or listening tests are established here, so there is no evidence-based “best” model to name.

Decide whether you need a subwoofer
The R200A has a dedicated subwoofer output. If you want more low-frequency extension, consider a powered subwoofer and follow its connection and setup instructions. It supplements the main left-and-right speakers; it does not replace the stereo pair. Yamaha R200A product overview.

Yamaha USA styles the current product name as “R200A,” without a hyphen. A retailer listing calls a product “YAMAHA R-200A (B),” but that listing does not establish that it is identical to the current Yamaha USA model. Check the model number on your receiver and use the matching regional manual; do not rely on instructions for a similarly named Yamaha receiver.
