Choose by the experience you want: Sonic Origins is a remastered collection of four early games, Sonic Superstars is a new classic-style adventure, and SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS combines a remaster with a new campaign. If you want both familiar stages and something new, the hybrid release is the clearest fit.
First, what do “port,” “remaster,” and “new game” mean?
These labels describe different kinds of releases. A port brings an existing game to another platform; the label alone says little about how much it has changed. A remaster updates an existing game for a new release, while a collection gathers multiple games together. A new game offers a new campaign or setting, even when its style recalls older entries.
The official product descriptions below identify remasters, collections, and new campaigns. They do not establish the technical history or quality of every Sonic port, so a port should be judged by its specific edition and platform rather than assumed to be better or worse.
Which Sonic release matches what you want?
| Release | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic Origins | Remasters Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It includes Classic and Anniversary modes, unlockable content, and a Museum. | You want a collected way to revisit early Sonic games, with a choice of presentation and rules. |
| Sonic Superstars | A new 2D game set in the Northstar Islands, with new Emerald powers and Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. The PlayStation listing describes local four-player campaign co-op and Battle Mode. | You want a fresh setting and abilities in a classic-style platformer. |
| SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS | A remaster of Sonic Generations’ 2D and 3D stages, plus a new Shadow Generations campaign. | You want familiar material and a distinct new campaign in one release. |
What changes between Sonic Origins’ modes?
Classic Mode
SEGA describes Classic Mode as retaining the original stage designs and rules. Choose it if you want the older structure rather than the more forgiving Anniversary format.

How should you decide between familiar stages and a new adventure?
- Pick Sonic Origins if the appeal is revisiting four early games in one remastered collection.
- Pick Sonic Superstars if you would rather explore a new setting and try new Emerald powers in a new 2D campaign.
- Pick SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS if you want older Sonic Generations stages alongside a new Shadow campaign. This combination makes it the most direct choice for someone undecided between revisiting and trying something new.

What SEGA’s comments and sales figure do—and do not—tell you
In a GamesRadar report published October 1, 2026, Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka said, “Remaking an old game requires about as many resources as creating a new title.” The same report quoted him saying, “Rather than using those limited resources to make remakes and remasters, we have a stronger desire to provide fans with new games and deliver new surprises.” These are Iizuka’s reported comments about the studio’s preference, not a universal rule about the cost of remakes or the quality of any particular release. SEGA Sammy Holdings’ January 2025 investor material said SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS had surpassed two million units. That is a historical threshold reported in January 2025, not a current lifetime sales total. See SEGA Sammy’s investor materials.

Which one should you play first?
For a focused trip through early Sonic, start with Sonic Origins. For a new classic-style platformer, choose Sonic Superstars. If you want the balance of returning stages and a separate new campaign, SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is the strongest match. The right choice depends on whether you value familiar games, a new setting, or both—not simply whether a release is called a port, remaster, or new game.
