A 120Hz display can refresh up to 120 times per second, making supported motion look and feel smoother than on a 60Hz display. It can also use more power when held at a high refresh rate. Adaptive modes may reduce that cost by lowering the rate when the screen does not need frequent updates, but the effect on battery life depends on the device and how you use it.

What 120Hz means—and what it does not

Hertz (Hz) measures how often a display can refresh. At 120Hz, it can update up to 120 times each second; at 60Hz, up to 60 times.

Refresh rate is different from frame rate. Refresh rate is the display’s capacity to update, while frame rate is how often an app or video produces a new image. A 120Hz screen does not turn 24-frames-per-second film into 120 distinct frames per second. Android describes adaptive refresh as matching display refresh to content rendering on supported devices, and Microsoft likewise discusses aligning refresh with video cadence in its Windows hardware guidance.

When does 120Hz look or feel smoother?

The difference is most noticeable when the image is changing: scrolling, interface animation, gaming, and pen or pointer movement can appear more fluid when the device and content support a higher rate. Samsung describes smoother navigation and animation on compatible Galaxy models; Microsoft also identifies gaming, browsing, and inking as possible benefits, depending on content and hardware.

A 120Hz setting does not guarantee that an app produces 120 new frames every second, nor does it eliminate stutter or lag. App performance, frame production, response time, and synchronization also affect what you see. For static pages or content with a low frame rate, the benefit may be less apparent.

What does 120Hz do to battery life?

A fixed high-refresh setting can use more power than 60Hz. Samsung says its Standard 60Hz mode provides better battery life, while Motorola describes its higher-refresh option as using more battery than an efficiency mode capped at 60Hz. Those are device-setting recommendations, not a universal measurement of how many hours you will lose.

There is no reliable battery-hours penalty that applies to every 120Hz device. Battery use also depends on brightness, display technology, processor load, radios, apps, network activity, and game rendering. The cited manufacturer guidance does not isolate refresh rate as the sole cause in a general cross-device measurement.

How adaptive refresh changes the tradeoff

On supported devices, adaptive refresh can raise the rate for motion and lower it when frequent updates are unnecessary. Samsung says its Adaptive mode adjusts refresh dynamically up to 120Hz. Android’s adaptive-refresh functionality also depends on hardware support and the Android version, so available ranges and behavior vary by device.

Windows 11’s Dynamic Refresh Rate is another hardware-dependent option. Microsoft says lowering refresh can extend battery life on compatible portable devices. On Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to review available refresh rates; the options shown depend on the PC and display.

LG Display makes a separate, vendor-specific claim of up to 13% lower power consumption compared with its own 2023 panel, describing its variable-refresh technology. That figure is not a general battery-life saving for 120Hz displays and should not be applied to other devices.

Which refresh setting should you use?

Setting or approach Best suited to Tradeoff
High or fixed refresh Frequent scrolling, animation, or gaming where supported motion matters most May use more power than a lower rate
Adaptive refresh People who want smoother motion while allowing the device to lower refresh when possible Availability and behavior vary by device, operating system, and content
Standard or efficiency mode Battery life or mostly static use is the priority Motion may look less fluid than at a higher refresh rate

Mode names and capabilities differ by model. Maximum refresh may also depend on resolution, power-saving settings, and app behavior. For example, Samsung notes that some models have different options and that Power saving mode can switch a phone to Standard.

How to choose in practice

  1. If smoothness matters most: turn on the device’s high-refresh or adaptive mode, if available. Use your normal apps and games to judge the difference.
  2. If battery life matters more: try Standard, efficiency, or battery-saver settings. These may reduce refresh, but the resulting runtime gain is device- and workload-specific.
  3. If you use Windows: check Settings > System > Display > Advanced display for Dynamic Refresh Rate or other available options. If the setting is absent, the hardware or configuration may not support it.
  4. Compare under your normal workload: keep brightness, apps, and usage as consistent as practical when evaluating settings. A change in screen time, gaming, or network use can obscure the refresh-rate effect.
