Android Auto has no single switch for every kind of suggestion. First identify whether the item comes from Waze, Google Maps, Google Assistant, message summaries, or an Android phone feature; each has a different fix. The menu names below reflect Google and Waze help instructions current as of October 3, 2026, but may vary by device, app version, vehicle, and region.
Identify where the suggestion comes from
Notice where the item appears and which app or feature is responsible. A destination in Google Maps, a Waze trip card, an Assistant recommendation, a spoken message summary, and a phone-level app suggestion are not the same feature. Android Auto does not provide one universal suggestions control.
- Waze trip card: turn off Waze’s trip-suggestion setting.
- Google Maps destination: choose the correct destination or a saved location.
- Assistant recommendation: review the relevant activity and personal-results settings; these affect personalization more broadly.
- Spoken message summary: disable Message Summary separately.
- Suggestion on the phone rather than the car display: check Android Contextual Suggestions.
Turn off Waze trip suggestions
Waze says trip suggestions are on by default for Android Auto. To disable them, open Waze on your phone and go to Settings > Privacy > Personalization > Trip suggestions, then turn off Show trip suggestions. See Waze’s instructions for removing trip suggestions based on driving routines.
Correct a Google Maps destination suggestion
In Android Auto’s Google Maps destination picker, Recent reflects places visited recently and recent searches. It is separate from Saved, which contains locations you have saved. Choose the intended saved place or search for the correct destination rather than relying on an inaccurate recent item. Google says you must put the vehicle in Park to type a destination on the car display. The picker also offers Categories for browsing places. See Google’s Android Auto navigation instructions.

Change Google Assistant recommendations
If the item is a personalized Assistant recommendation, review Web & App Activity, personal-results notification settings, and Location History. Google says recommendations may draw on prior Assistant interactions and settings, Location History, Android app use, and activity in other Google products. Google states: “If you don’t want feature suggestions from Google Assistant on Android based on your Web and App activity, you can turn off Web & App Activity.” These are broader account or device personalization controls, not a documented single Android Auto suggestions switch. Choose the setting that matches the activity and personalization you want to retain. See Google Assistant Help on suggestions and activity controls.
Stop spoken message summaries
If the distraction is a spoken summary of an incoming message, turn off Message Summary in Android Auto settings or Google Assistant settings. This setting controls message summaries, not navigation cards or other suggestions. Google cautions that AI-generated summaries can contain mistakes. Turn off Android Contextual Suggestions on the phone
For recommendations that appear on the phone rather than on the Android Auto display, open device Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play services > All services > Developer features > Contextual Suggestions. Android’s Contextual Suggestions controls include an option to stop using device location for recommendations and an option to delete stored data. Google says this data is automatically deleted after 60 days. Menu availability can depend on the Android version and device. See Google’s Android Help for Contextual Suggestions.
Do not confuse Android Auto with Google built-in
Android Auto projects phone apps onto a compatible car display. Cars with Google built-in have Google services integrated into the vehicle and use separate settings. For Google built-in, Google says Assistant Personal results can enable destination and media recommendations on the car display. The setting is Settings > Google > Google Assistant > Allow personal results; availability and settings vary by manufacturer, region, and data plan. Do not use this car setting as if it were an Android Auto phone-projection control. See Google’s guidance for personal results in cars with Google built-in.

Follow the shortest troubleshooting path
- Identify whether the card or prompt is on the car display or phone, and whether Maps, Waze, Assistant, or another feature owns it.
- For a Waze trip suggestion, switch off Show trip suggestions in Waze.
- For a Maps destination, distinguish Recent from Saved and select or search for the right place. Put the car in Park before typing on its display.
- For an Assistant recommendation, change the relevant activity or personal-results control, understanding that it can affect personalization beyond Android Auto.
- For a spoken message summary, disable Message Summary separately.
- For a phone-level recommendation, check Contextual Suggestions in Google Play services.
Google notes that Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices. If your phone uses Gemini or labels differ from these instructions, follow the feature and setting names currently shown on your device; controls and availability can change with app, Android, and vehicle versions.
