To make an image of a WordPress page, send its URL to a browser-based screenshot API, then use the returned image or render link in your site or application. WordPress’s REST API serves WordPress data as JSON; it is not the browser-rendering step that turns a page into a screenshot. You can use a WordPress plugin and shortcode for a quicker setup, or call a screenshot API from server-side code for more control.
WordPress REST API vs. a screenshot API
The WordPress REST API lets a client discover and retrieve WordPress resources, including pages exposed through routes such as /wp/v2/pages. WordPress Developer Resources says, “The REST API uses JSON exclusively as the request and response format, including error responses.” Public data can be accessed anonymously; private data requires authentication. A screenshot API does a different job: it opens a supplied page URL in a browser-rendering environment and returns an image, PDF, or render link. A custom integration may use the WordPress API to find page data or URLs, but it still needs a screenshot service to render the page.
Do not assume every WordPress site exposes an identical API surface. WordPress’s discovery guidance describes checking the site’s API index for namespaces such as wp/v2; clients can also discover the API through a page’s Link header or HTML link element. Choose a WordPress screenshot workflow
Use a plugin and shortcode
A plugin is usually the simplest route when editors need to place captures in WordPress content without building an API integration. The Capture plugin documents shortcodes for screenshots and PDFs, including:

The WordPress.org listing specifies WordPress 4.7+ and PHP 7.4+ requirements and documents options such as viewport size, full-page capture, waiting for a CSS selector, delay, dark mode, cookie-banner blocking, and ad blocking. These are configurable capture options, not a guarantee that every site will render identically. Urlbox’s WordPress plugin repository documents a similar shortcode approach. Its example is [urlbox url=urlbox.com thumb_width=600 full_page=true]. Setup requires a Urlbox account, API key, and secret. Build a custom integration
A custom WordPress plugin, theme feature, or external application can submit a page URL and capture options to an API, then use the resulting image URL or store the returned image. This gives you control over when captures run and how your site displays them, but you must implement the surrounding behavior, including storage, caching, and error handling.
- Choose the page URL. Use the exact public URL, or a URL the rendering service is authorized to access. A WordPress API endpoint can help your application discover page data, but the screenshot request needs the rendered page URL.
- Set the capture area. Decide between the visible viewport, the full page, or a selected element. Choose viewport width and height to match the intended display.
- Set rendering and timing options. For dynamic pages, decide whether to wait for a selector, a delay, or another documented condition. The right wait condition depends on how that page loads.
- Call the screenshot API server-side. Keep private API credentials out of public HTML and browser-side JavaScript. - Handle the response. Decide whether your application will display a returned image or render URL, or store the image for later use. Define how it should handle API errors and whether captures should be cached or retried; these choices are application-specific.
- Embed and inspect the result. Display the image in WordPress and check it at the actual size and location where visitors will see it.
For full-page captures, rendering mode can affect accuracy and speed. Urlbox documents stitch, which scrolls and combines page sections, and native, which uses browser-native capture and prioritizes speed but may fail on some pages. Capture settings that affect the result
- Viewport, full page, or element: Viewport capture limits the output to the visible browser area; full-page capture aims to include the entire page; element capture targets a particular page component when supported.
- Viewport dimensions: Set the width and height for the layout you want to show. A narrow viewport may trigger a mobile layout instead of the desktop design.
- Dynamic content: Pages that load content after the initial response may need a selector wait or delay. Capture documents both kinds of option; choose according to the page rather than assuming a fixed wait works everywhere.
- Full-page mode and output limits: Stitching can capture content by scrolling and combining sections; native capture may be faster but may not work on every page. Very tall output can encounter format limits.
- Authorization and privacy: A hosted renderer receives the URL and request parameters needed to perform the capture. Confirm you are authorized to send the page and any credentials involved. Troubleshooting failed or unexpected screenshots
The result is blank or incomplete
Check that the URL opens as intended and that the capture waits for content that loads after the initial page response. If the page is long, verify the full-page mode and output-format limits. A viewport-only capture will not include content outside the visible area.
The screenshot shows a popup, banner, or chat widget
Check whether the chosen plugin or service supports handling that overlay and whether the relevant option is enabled. Decide where the screenshot belongs
If editors need a screenshot embedded directly in posts, a shortcode plugin is the lower-development path. In either case, test with the actual page and layout, protect credentials, and decide deliberately whether captures should be stored, refreshed, or cached.
