If a website is blank, incomplete, or asking you to disable your ad blocker, start by pausing or allowlisting protection for that site only, then reload. If that does not help, briefly disable the extension to test whether it is responsible. A page can also break because of another extension, your browser’s built-in protections, saved site data, or the website itself, so use the steps below to narrow down the cause before changing settings globally.
1. Make a site-specific exception and reload
On the affected page, open your ad blocker’s toolbar menu and look for a control such as Pause on this site, Allow ads on this site, or Allowlist. The exact label and scope depend on the extension. Reload the page if it does not refresh automatically.
These controls may apply to different amounts of a site. For example, uBlock says Pause uBlock disables it for the current page, while Allow ads on this site applies to the whole website. AdBlock’s desktop extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge offer Pause on this site, which refreshes the page and adds it to a smart allowlist for seven days; returning within that period renews the window. That duration applies to AdBlock’s documented desktop feature, not to all blockers. See AdBlock’s pause instructions and allowlisting options.
2. Test whether the ad blocker is actually responsible
If the site-specific exception makes no difference, briefly disable the ad blocker extension and reload the page. This is a diagnostic test, not a recommended permanent setting. AdBlock advises that if the page still does not display correctly while AdBlock is disabled, the issue is something other than AdBlock. Turn the extension back on after testing. Its guidance is that you should not need to disable AdBlock entirely while browsing: a site-specific control is the narrower first step. See AdBlock’s pause and troubleshooting guidance.

3. Check for another extension or privacy tool
If the site still claims an ad blocker is active, another tool may be blocking content or changing how the page behaves. Mozilla notes that extensions that block content, modify websites, or change browser behavior can cause pages to display incorrectly. Check for extensions that block scripts, ads, trackers, or cookies, as well as cybersecurity or VPN software that filters web traffic.
- Open the browser’s extensions page and switch off other relevant extensions one at a time.
- Reload the affected page after each change. If it starts working, re-enable extensions one by one to identify which setting is involved.
- Check whether the problem occurs only in a private window. Some browsers use different extension settings in private browsing, so confirm which extensions are allowed there.
- If needed, clear cookies for the affected site and try again. This can sign you out of that site.
AdBlock lists other extensions, cybersecurity or VPN software, private-browsing settings, and site cookies among possible reasons an anti-adblocking warning may persist. Mozilla’s extension troubleshooting guidance also recommends turning extensions off one at a time and reloading.
4. Check the browser’s built-in site protection
Browser protections are separate from third-party ad-blocker extensions. A browser-level exception will not necessarily change what an installed extension blocks.
Firefox: Enhanced Tracking Protection
On the affected site, select the shield icon beside the address bar and turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for that site. Firefox reloads the page and keeps the exception specific to that site; protection remains enabled elsewhere. If this test does not help, or you no longer need the exception, turn protection back on from the shield menu. Follow Mozilla’s Enhanced Tracking Protection instructions.

Chrome: intrusive-ad setting
Chrome’s built-in control concerns intrusive ads on sites that violate the Better Ads Standards; it is not a switch for every third-party blocker. To permit intrusive ads for a trusted site, open Settings, choose Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Intrusive ads, and adjust the setting for that site, then reload. Labels can change between Chrome versions. See Google’s Chrome instructions for intrusive ads.
5. Compare browsers and isolate the problem
Open the same page in another browser. If it fails in multiple browsers, the website itself is a likely cause. If it fails only in Firefox, continue with Firefox-specific checks, including extensions and Enhanced Tracking Protection. Mozilla recommends comparing browsers and disabling extensions one by one; its guide to websites that look wrong covers these checks.

AdBlock also provides a desktop troubleshooting tool for its Chrome, Firefox, and Edge extensions. Advanced users can inspect AdBlock’s resource page to see requests and how the extension treats them. Avoid adding custom filter exceptions unless you understand their effect: AdBlock warns that an incorrect custom exception can break a page. Start with reversible built-in controls instead. See the AdBlock Diagnostic Tool and resource page instructions.

When testing is finished, resume blocking or remove the site exception if you do not want ads allowed there. AdBlock documents a Resume Ad Blocking control and steps to remove a saved site rule; other extensions use their own labels and controls. See AdBlock’s allowlist instructions.

If the page remains broken with the extension disabled and fails in multiple browsers, contact the website’s support team. Firefox users can also report a broken site to Mozilla when the issue appears specific to Firefox. The purpose of the tests above is to distinguish a site-specific exception from a broader browser or website problem—not to leave protection disabled indefinitely.
