Show the agent the page in the state where the problem appears, identify the affected area, describe what you see and what should happen instead, then ask it to make the change and verify it in the browser. A screenshot can communicate a visual defect, but it does not by itself reveal the cause in the code or prove that a repair worked.
What to show the agent
Choose evidence that answers the question you are asking. A screenshot shows rendered appearance; a structured page snapshot helps identify content and controls. When the issue involves both appearance and a specific element, provide both if your tools support them.
| What you need to explain | Useful evidence | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Spacing, overlap, color, cropping, or visual hierarchy | A screenshot of the relevant viewport or selected element | A screenshot shows one rendered state; it does not identify the underlying code cause. |
| Which control or region to target | Accessible names, a structured accessibility snapshot, or selected-element context | Structure alone may not make the visual defect clear. |
| An interaction bug | Reproduction steps, the browser state at failure, a failure-time screenshot, and relevant console output | One successful run does not establish that an intermittent problem is fixed. |
| A responsive layout problem | Inspection or screenshots at the affected viewport sizes, plus relevant interaction checks | Only the viewports and states actually checked can be reported as verified. |
Playwright describes accessibility snapshots as structured page information for inspecting and targeting elements, and its screenshot tools can capture a viewport, a selected element, or a full scrollable page. Its guidance recommends combining visual and structural context when both matter. See Playwright’s snapshot documentation and screenshot documentation.
A practical visual-feedback workflow
- Name the page and state. Give the route or URL and describe how to reach the relevant state: for example, open the menu, submit the form, or resize the viewport.
- Show the rendered page. Open the page in a browser the agent can inspect. If appearance or layout is central, include a screenshot of the relevant viewport or area. If supported, select the affected element and attach its page context.
- Point to the exact area. Identify the navigation, form, image, or other component that needs attention. Keep requests focused: one clearly described change per element is easier to evaluate than “make the page look better.”
- Describe the observed and desired states. State what is wrong and what result would count as fixed. For example: “At 390 px wide, the last navigation link wraps beneath the logo; keep the logo on its own row and move the links into a menu button.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a claim about a tested page.
- Ask the agent to verify in the browser. After the code change, have it refresh or reopen the app, repeat the relevant action, and inspect the affected viewport or state. Ask it to report what it checked and observed.
- If the problem remains, capture it while it happens. Supply the action that triggered the failure and a screenshot from that moment; include console or structural context when useful. If page changes invalidate element references in your automation tool, take a fresh snapshot before targeting elements again.
Visual Studio Code’s browser tools support adding selected elements and element comments to chat; selected context can include HTML, CSS, and an optional screenshot. Its documentation describes an edit-and-inspect loop and gives this example request: “Start the application, open it in the browser, test the sign-up flow, and fix any issues you find. Verify the fix before finishing.” See Use browser tools with agents. The feature set and labels are specific to VS Code and may change; other agents may not offer the same browser integration.

Write feedback the agent can act on
A useful report connects the page, the visible problem, and an acceptance condition. Replace subjective feedback with a concrete result the agent can check.
- Weak: “The form looks off.”
- More useful: “On the sign-up form, align the email and password fields, and show each validation error directly below its input.”
- Weak: “Fix mobile.”
- More useful: “At the narrow viewport I’m checking, the navigation links wrap under the logo. Keep the logo on its own row and replace the links with a menu button.”
VS Code’s documentation gives this element comment: “Collapse this navigation into a menu button on narrow screens.” It also gives: “Align these fields and show validation errors below each input.” These examples illustrate the pattern—identify the target and request an observable change—not a guarantee that every coding agent accepts element comments.

Use browser checks to distinguish a fix from a workaround
Repeat the action that exposed the defect. For a responsive issue, check the relevant desktop and mobile viewport sizes; for a form, try valid and invalid input states. Report only the states you actually inspected. A screenshot of the final page helps compare appearance, while repeating the interaction helps establish whether the behavior changed as intended.
For failed clicks or other intermittent interaction problems, capture evidence at the moment of failure instead of immediately increasing timeouts or adding sleeps. Selenium’s agent guidance notes that a failure-time screenshot can reveal an obstruction such as an overlay that an exception alone may not make obvious; it also cautions that longer waits can mask an intermittent failure rather than address its cause. An overlay is one possible explanation, not the explanation for every failed click. See Using AI coding agents with Selenium.

What visual feedback can—and cannot—prove
A screenshot records a rendered state. It can make a layout defect easy to communicate, but it does not show which CSS rule or component caused it. A structured snapshot can help an agent locate an element, but may omit the visual context that makes the problem apparent. Interaction steps reveal how to reproduce behavior, while a browser recheck shows whether the specific state you tested now behaves as requested.
Visual Studio Code summarizes its browser tooling this way: “Browser tools give agents a visual and interactive feedback loop for web development.” The key is the loop: provide evidence, request a concrete change, then inspect the result in the browser rather than treating the initial screenshot or the code edit as proof of success.
