If you want the hunted, vulnerable feeling of Outlast, start with Amnesia: The Bunker for stealth mixed with resource pressure, Alien: Isolation for a persistent pursuer, or Amnesia: The Dark Descent for classic hide-and-escape horror. For science-fiction dread and a story that raises bigger questions, choose SOMA. These games share parts of Outlast’s appeal, but differ in how much they let you fight, manage supplies, or steer the story.

Which game should you choose?

Game Best fit How survival works
Amnesia: The Bunker Hiding from a stalker while making active survival decisions Scavenge, craft, conserve scarce supplies, and manage light; limited defensive options mean it is not strictly combat-free.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent Classic hunted-and-escape horror First-person survival horror built around discovery, vulnerability, and trying to escape a threat.
SOMA Sci-fi dread and a story about identity No fighting back: outsmart enemies or run.
Alien: Isolation Stealth tension against a persistent pursuer Track the alien carefully; even a useful motion tracker can give away your position.
Directive 8020 Cinematic sci-fi survival with stealth sections Combines real-time threats and stealth with improvised weapons and branching narrative choices.

What makes these games feel like Outlast?

The closest match depends on which part of Outlast you want more of. Some games emphasize helpless evasion, while others add limited defense or make supplies part of the danger. A persistent pursuer creates a different kind of pressure from a story-led horror experience, and cinematic choices change the pace again.

  • For hiding and running: try Amnesia: The Dark Descent or SOMA.
  • For an active stalker plus resource decisions: choose Amnesia: The Bunker.
  • For a pursuer whose location you must constantly judge: try Alien: Isolation.
  • For a more cinematic, choice-driven experience: consider Directive 8020.

Amnesia: The Bunker: best for survival pressure and an active stalker

Amnesia: The Bunker is the strongest pick if you want evasion to be only one part of staying alive. Frictional Games describes it as a first-person horror game set in a WWI bunker, where a relentless AI-driven monster hunts you. The semi-open environment, scarce supplies, scavenging, and crafting make preparation part of the tension; keeping the lights on matters, too. The game released on June 6, 2023, according to its Steam listing.

Unlike a purely hide-or-run setup, the game includes a revolver and a noisy dynamo flashlight, along with other tools. Those options do not turn it into straightforward action horror: PC Gamer describes run-and-hide play with limited ability to fight back and resource tradeoffs. Expect to weigh whether to spend or risk supplies, rather than assuming you can solve every encounter by force. [PC Gamer]

Amnesia: The Dark Descent: best for classic hunted-and-escape horror

If you want a vulnerable protagonist, unsettling exploration, and the sense that something is hunting you, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the classic choice. Frictional Games labels it first-person survival horror and frames its experience around immersion, discovery, and living through a nightmare. Its synopsis centers on a protagonist whose remaining memory fades while the feeling of being hunted persists. That focus makes it a good fit for players who value escape and atmosphere over fighting back. See the developer’s press kit.

SOMA: best for sci-fi dread and narrative questions

SOMA shifts the setting to PATHOS-II, an underwater facility, and builds its horror around science-fiction questions of identity and consciousness. It suits players who want to explore a disturbing place and piece together what happened as much as they want to evade danger. Frictional’s guidance is direct: “Just remember there’s no fighting back, either you outsmart your enemies or you get ready to run.” That makes it a particularly clear option if helplessness is the part of Outlast you want, but its story-led sci-fi emphasis is distinct from Outlast’s approach. Details are in the developer’s press kit.

Alien: Isolation: best for a persistent pursuer

Alien: Isolation centers stealth tension on a xenomorph searching the Sevastopol. The threat is not only where the alien is, but whether your tools or movements reveal where you are. PC Gamer notes that the motion tracker can help you locate danger, yet using it is risky: the alien can hear it and see the light from its green screen. That makes it a natural choice if you like monitoring a pursuer and deciding when information is worth the exposure. PC Gamer’s horror-games guide discusses the tracker’s trade-off.

Directive 8020: best for cinematic sci-fi survival with stealth

Directive 8020 is worth considering if you are open to a more cinematic format than Outlast. Bandai Namco describes real-time alien threats, stealth, improvised weapons, and a branching narrative, so it is not focused solely on hiding and evasion. The publisher lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) as platforms in its announcement. Creative Director Will Doyle said, “We’re incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished, and bringing our storytelling to a sci-fi setting for the first time has been a hugely exciting step.”
