If a photo must travel as ordinary text, character-based art—strict ASCII or broader text art—is the relevant choice. Pixel art is an image made of colored pixels, so it needs to be sent as an image or displayed by a compatible graphics system. Text art is copyable and has a typographic look, but it gives up image detail; use a raster image when preserving the photo matters more than sending it as characters.
What is the difference between ASCII art and pixel art?
ASCII art and colored text art
Strictly defined, ASCII art uses printable characters from the ASCII character set. Traditionally, it was designed for line-based display in a monospaced, monochrome typeface. In casual conversation, “ASCII art” is often used more broadly for pictures made from text characters, including characters outside ASCII; not every text picture is literally ASCII-encoded. Anders Carlsson discusses these distinctions in “Beyond Encoding: A Critical Look at the Terminology of Text Graphics”.
ANSI-style text art adds color by assigning foreground and background colors to characters. It can show more tonal variation than monochrome character art, but depends on the receiving app retaining and rendering the relevant color control sequences.

Pixel art is raster imagery: the picture consists of colored pixels. A deliberately blocky appearance does not make it text. To share pixel art, send or embed an image, or use a graphics renderer that can display it.

Some text graphics use block or shading characters to resemble a tiled image. Carlsson proposes “text mosaic” for this kind of character-based work. It may be called pixel art informally, but it is still text, not a raster picture.
Which format should you choose for sharing a photo?

There is no sourced head-to-head measurement establishing a universal winner or a numeric fidelity advantage. In practice, the choice follows the delivery constraint: use text art if characters themselves must carry the picture; use an image when the recipient can receive images and visual detail matters.

How do you turn a photo into ASCII art?
A converter maps image regions to characters and can produce plain or colored output. The img2txt project documentation describes ANSI output and colored HTML, along with controls for maximum dimensions, target aspect ratio, antialiasing, dithering, and color.

- Prepare the image. Crop or resize around the subject so it fits the compact output you want to share.
- Set a maximum output size. A smaller character grid takes less space, while a larger one allows more room for visual variation.
- Check aspect ratio. Character cells are not necessarily square. Try the converter’s aspect-ratio control so the result is less likely to look distorted.
- Compare color and dithering settings. Try color if the destination can preserve it, and compare dithered and undithered versions. These controls affect the conversion; the best setting depends on the source image and intended display.
- Preview it in the destination. Check that line breaks and character widths remain aligned, and that any color survives the intended sharing route before relying on it.
These are practical suggestions based on the documented controls, not a claim that one setting has been tested as best. The repository documentation does not establish whether a particular messaging or social platform preserves ANSI output, HTML, or alignment.

Why does an ASCII photo look stretched?
Text characters occupy cells that may be taller than they are wide. Mapping a photo into a grid without accounting for that difference can change its apparent proportions. Try the converter’s target-aspect-ratio control and preview the result in the same kind of display where it will be read. Font choice and character-width behavior can also affect alignment.
Will colored ASCII art show up in a message?
Only if the app and sharing route preserve and render the color information. ANSI-style color relies on control sequences; plain-text handling may show no color or may not handle those sequences as intended. The available sources do not confirm support for specific messaging or social services, so test the exact route rather than assuming color or formatting will survive. Plain monochrome characters avoid the color-sequence dependency, though alignment can still vary.

Can a terminal show pixels without turning them into characters?
Some terminal emulators support raster graphics protocols, which can display actual image pixels rather than converting them to text. The kitty graphics protocol documentation describes support for RGB, RGBA, and PNG data, with design goals that include integration with text and alpha blending. This is a terminal capability, not ordinary text sharing, and it works only where the terminal emulator supports the protocol.
