For classic character-based ASCII art, run jp2a photo.jpg in a terminal. jp2a also documents PNG and WebP input, while Chafa is an alternative for ANSI/Unicode character art or terminal graphics. If the result is hard to read, adjust its dimensions or prepare a resized copy of the photo with ImageMagick.
Convert a photo with jp2a
Install jp2a using your operating system’s package manager or the project’s installation instructions. There is no single installation procedure established here for every platform, so use instructions that match your system.
- Open a terminal in the folder containing the image, or provide its path.
- Run
jp2a photo.jpg, replacingphoto.jpgwith your file name or path. The jp2a manual documents JPEG, PNG, and WebP inputs, as well as image URLs. - Read the characters printed in the terminal. If the result is too wide, too small, or difficult to make out, adjust the dimensions or prepare the image as described below.
Exact option syntax can vary by installed version; check the manual available for your version before adding flags.
Adjust the output for readability
Change the dimensions
Character art has limited spatial resolution: a small output may lose detail, while a very wide one may be awkward to view. Start with a width that fits the terminal or destination, then adjust until the subject is recognizable. jp2a documents dimension options, but consult its installed manual for the precise syntax.

Prepare the source photo
If the image has too much detail or its subject is hard to distinguish, create a resized or otherwise adjusted copy before conversion. ImageMagick’s command-line tools document resizing and other image operations; use magick for this optional preprocessing, then pass the resulting image to jp2a. The useful adjustment depends on the particular photo and the result you want.
Try a different character ramp or color treatment
jp2a documents options for selecting the characters used to represent image tones, as well as color output and background treatment. These choices change the appearance and can affect readability. Check the installed manual for the relevant option names and syntax.
Choose a tool for the output you want
| Need | Tool | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Classic character-based ASCII from JPEG, PNG, or WebP | jp2a | Character selection, dimensions, color, and background options are documented in its manual. |
| ANSI/Unicode character art or terminal graphics | Chafa | Its manual describes terminal display output and format selection. Default behavior depends in part on terminal support. |
| Resize or process the image before rendering | ImageMagick | Its command-line tools provide resizing and other image operations; it is a preprocessing option, not the ASCII renderer in this workflow. |
| A convenience shell wrapper | Image2Term | A community project describes a wrapper using ImageMagick with jp2a or Chafa. Check its current repository status and dependencies before relying on it. |
Choose based on whether you want plain character output, colored characters, or terminal graphics, and where you plan to view the result. The rendering also depends on terminal capabilities and the selected output format; no tool is established as universally best-looking.

If you want to save the result to a text file or use an HTML/output option, check the current manual for the selected program and version first. Supported output formats differ by tool and version, so do not assume a flag from one converter applies to another.
