You are most likely to notice PCIe 5.0 over PCIe 4.0 when a compatible SSD is handling sustained, large transfers or other storage-heavy work. For ordinary gaming with the same graphics card on a full x16 link, PCIe 5.0 usually does not deliver a noticeable average-FPS increase. The generation doubles the interface’s per-lane signaling rate—not the speed of every device or application.

What changes between PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0?

PCIe is a point-to-point interface used to connect components such as graphics cards and NVMe SSDs. A link has both a generation and a width: x1, x4, x8, and x16 describe how many lanes it uses. More lanes or a newer generation can raise the link’s theoretical bandwidth, but the device and workload must be able to use it.

Intel lists PCIe 4.0 at 16 GT/s per lane and PCIe 5.0 at 32 GT/s per lane. GT/s is the signaling rate, not a promise of application speed; Intel cautions that realized speeds can be lower than the theoretical maximum. Intel’s PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 overview explains the distinction.

Kioxia America’s July 2023 FAQ lists the PCIe 4.0 standard as ratified in 2017 and PCIe 5.0 in 2019, attributing the dates to PCI-SIG. Those are standard ratification years, not measures of performance. Kioxia America’s FAQ includes the comparison.

Will I notice a difference between PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0?

It depends primarily on the device, its lane width, and what you do with it. An interface with twice the signaling rate can help a device move more data, but it cannot make a CPU-bound task faster or remove limits elsewhere in the system.

Use case What to expect from PCIe 5.0
Everyday desktop use Often little practical difference unless an application or device is limited by PCIe 4.0 bandwidth.
Gaming with the same GPU at PCIe 4.0 x16 versus PCIe 5.0 x16 Usually little or no noticeable average-FPS change in typical current gaming, according to Intel and MSI.
Large sequential transfers or storage-heavy creative work Potentially noticeable if the SSD, slot, and workload can sustain the higher throughput.
Booting or loading games from an SSD Not reliably twice as fast; results depend on the software and other system work, not just sequential-read bandwidth.

These are practical expectations, not guarantees for every component or workload. A card using fewer lanes, unusual lane sharing, or a workload that transfers unusually large amounts of data across the link can change the outcome.

Does PCIe 5.0 improve gaming FPS?

For a current graphics card running at a full x16 link, moving from PCIe 4.0 to PCIe 5.0 is generally a weak reason to expect higher average frame rates. MSI says many high-performance GPUs do not fully saturate PCIe 4.0 x16 and that the same GPU typically shows little or no noticeable average gaming difference on Gen 5 x16. Intel likewise characterizes current real-world gaming benefits as minor. MSI’s comparison discusses the gaming and storage cases.

Is a PCIe 5.0 SSD worth it for gaming?

Usually, peak sequential speed alone is not a strong reason to replace a good Gen 4 SSD in a gaming PC. Game loading also depends on the engine, CPU work, compression, and software optimization. A faster advertised read rate does not translate directly into a matching reduction in load time.

SanDisk’s product brief, for example, lists up to 7,300 MB/s sequential reads for specified WD_BLACK SN850X Gen 4 capacities and up to 14,900 MB/s for the 1–4 TB WD_BLACK SN8100 Gen 5. It lists up to 14,000 MB/s writes for specified 2–4 TB SN8100 models. These are manufacturer maximum specifications, not independent results for sustained everyday use. The same brief reports up to 77% better performance for the SN8100 than the SN850X in one 3DMark Storage comparison. That is a vendor-reported synthetic benchmark comparison, not evidence that games load 77% faster. SanDisk’s WD_BLACK SSD product brief describes the figures and comparison.

PC Gamer’s January 2026 gaming SSD guide describes tests including sequential and random performance, a 30 GB game-install copy, PCMark10, a Final Fantasy XIV load test, and drive temperatures. Its buying context notes that Gen 5 sequential speeds may not provide much real-world reason to pay more than for a good Gen 4 drive in many gaming builds. That is useful context, not a controlled comparison of every drive pairing. PC Gamer’s 2026 gaming SSD guide outlines its testing and recommendations.

When a Gen 5 SSD is more compelling

Frequent large-file transfers, high-resolution video work, 3D or visual-effects projects, large datasets, and some AI development are more likely to benefit when the workload can keep the drive busy. The gain still depends on the complete storage path and the application—not just the SSD’s headline speed.

Can I use a PCIe 5.0 SSD in a PCIe 4.0 slot?

Yes, if the device and slot are otherwise compatible, but the connection will operate at the highest performance supported by both. A Gen 5 SSD in a Gen 4 slot is limited to Gen 4 performance. The reverse also works: a Gen 4 device can operate in a Gen 5-capable slot at the supported Gen 4 level.

PCI-SIG’s compatibility FAQ says: “PCIe 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x cards will seamlessly plug into PCIe 5.0-capable slots and operate at the highest performance levels possible.” It also says Gen 5 cards fit earlier-generation slots and operate at the highest performance those configurations support. PCI-SIG’s compatibility FAQ provides the standards-body guidance.

Do I need a PCIe 5.0 motherboard for my graphics card?

Not solely to get better gaming performance from a graphics card that already works well at PCIe 4.0 x16. If you are building around a Gen 5 SSD or another device that can use the additional bandwidth, verify support on the specific slot you plan to use. The motherboard’s headline generation does not guarantee that every PCIe or M.2 connector supports Gen 5.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Check the CPU and motherboard specifications. Confirm the generation and lane width available for the particular graphics-card slot or M.2 connector; support can depend on both components.
  2. Identify the exact M.2 slot. Some boards support Gen 5 only on a particular connector, sometimes the one nearest the CPU. SanDisk recommends checking the board’s details because slot support varies.
  3. Read the motherboard manual’s lane map. Populating an M.2 connector can share lanes with another device or affect the graphics-card link width. The effect is model-specific.
  4. Confirm physical fit and cooling. Check the drive’s size, connector, heatsink requirements, and clearance. Some Gen 5 drives and boards differ in their cooling arrangements; use a board heatsink if it is suitable and compatible with the drive.
  5. Match the upgrade to the workload. Sustained sequential transfers are a better reason to consider Gen 5 than routine booting or gaming. For a gaming-focused build, compare capacity and practical application performance as well as maximum sequential figures.

MSI also notes that DirectStorage does not require a Gen 5 SSD: a suitable PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD can support it. MSI’s DirectStorage discussion addresses that point.

Which generation should you choose?

For mainstream gaming and general-purpose storage, a good Gen 4 SSD is a sensible choice when price, capacity, and practical application performance matter more than peak sequential throughput. Consider Gen 5 if your platform has a compatible Gen 5 M.2 slot and your work regularly moves large amounts of data or otherwise benefits from high storage throughput. If you already have a working Gen 4 system, a Gen 5 label by itself is not a compelling reason to replace the motherboard or graphics card.

A separate M.2 heatsink is conditional, not an automatic purchase: first check whether the motherboard already includes a suitable one and whether it clears the drive. Cooling needs vary by drive and board.
