Start with the exact game’s system requirements, then try reversible checks: restart the PC, update Windows and graphics drivers, close overlays and background apps, and verify the game files if it is on Steam. The right fix depends on whether you are seeing frame-time stutter, a game crash, a whole-PC failure, or slow loading; none of these checks is guaranteed to fix every game.
How do I fix game stuttering, crashes, or long loading times?
Work through the checks in order, changing one thing at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped and avoids risky steps before simpler ones have been ruled out.
- Identify and record the symptom. Distinguish low frame rate from intermittent stutter, a crash to desktop, a full-PC freeze or restart, and slow launch or level loading. Note when it happens and whether it started after a game, Windows, driver, settings, or hardware change. Record the game version, launcher, Windows version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage type, and graphics-driver version.
- Check the game’s own system requirements. Compare your PC with the current requirements for that specific title. Capcom says a system below minimum requirements may have poor frame rates or fail to run; if it meets minimum but not recommended requirements, lower graphics settings as a first test. Restart the PC before comparing results. See Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance.
- Try low-risk software checks. Install available Windows updates and current graphics drivers from the relevant official vendor, then restart. Close nonessential apps, recorders, and performance overlays while testing. On a laptop, check the game publisher’s or GPU maker’s instructions for selecting the intended high-performance GPU, if applicable. Steam’s software performance guidance discusses background applications as a possible factor.
- Verify the installation if you use Steam. Restart the PC, open Steam Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. It can take several minutes. Steam may report a few files that could not be verified because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced; Steam says these are normally safe to ignore. Verification can reacquire missing or corrupted game files. Other launchers have their own repair or verification options. See Steam’s file-verification instructions and Capcom’s guidance.
- Follow the symptom-specific checks below. Avoid making several changes at once; test the game after each relevant adjustment.
Why does my PC game keep crashing?
If the game closes or fails to launch
Check requirements, updates, and file integrity first. Note the exact error text and whether the crash happens at launch, at a particular scene, or after a repeatable action. If it began immediately after a game patch or driver update, include that timing in your notes. Steam points out that launch failures can have varied software and hardware causes; if these checks do not help, use the game developer’s support channel. Its launch troubleshooting page provides general guidance.
Do not treat administrator mode, antivirus exclusions, or disabling security software as universal fixes. A publisher may document a targeted exception for a particular game or setup; follow only the relevant official instructions, and do not leave protection disabled permanently. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guide includes game-specific checks.

If the whole PC freezes, blue-screens, or restarts
A system-wide failure is not just a game crash. Steam notes that system crashes can point to a computer problem, and overheating is more plausible when performance slows before the failure. Stop repeated stress testing if the PC remains unstable, and seek PC support rather than repeatedly relaunching the game. Check ventilation and temperatures only if you can do so safely. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance discusses hardware-related performance factors.
How do I fix game stuttering or frame drops?
First lower demanding graphics settings or resolution and close background apps and overlays. Check that the PC has unobstructed ventilation; heat can affect smooth play. If stutter persists, consider whether the game is reading assets from a slow drive or competing for available memory. Steam identifies slow drive reads and limited free memory as possible contributors, but these are not diagnoses for every game. See its hardware performance guidance.

Do not assume clearing a shader cache will fix stutter. Capcom’s guidance treats deleting game cache files as a conditional troubleshooting step for some graphical issues, not a guaranteed remedy. Follow the specific game’s instructions before deleting files; do not remove unrelated files or saves.
Why are game loading times so long?
Separate download or installation time from the time the game takes to launch or load a level. For in-game loading, check available memory and the type and condition of the drive where the game is installed. Slow drive reads can contribute to delays; Microsoft’s Windows game-development guidance explains that file handling can affect loading behavior.

If the game is on a slow drive, an SSD may help with drive-related loading, but it will not fix unrelated crashes, a game-engine problem, or every cause of long loads. Before buying or moving a game, confirm that your PC supports the drive’s interface and form factor. Back up saves and check the launcher’s cloud-save behavior before reinstalling or moving the installation.
When should I reinstall drivers or change security settings?
Keep Windows and graphics drivers current, use the GPU maker’s and game publisher’s instructions, and reboot after installing a driver. If an ordinary update does not resolve a persistent problem, consult the game or GPU maker’s troubleshooting instructions before attempting clean driver removal. Third-party removal tools can affect more than the game, so use them cautiously. Security exclusions should be limited to a specific, publisher-documented case; never turn off protection permanently.

What information should I send to game support?
If the basic checks fail, contact the game’s developer or publisher with a concise report. Include:
- Game title and version, launcher, Windows version, and whether the PC meets the game’s requirements.
- CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage type, graphics-driver version, and graphics settings.
- The exact symptom and error text, where and when it occurs, and steps that reproduce it.
- Whether restarting or any specific troubleshooting change affected the problem.
- A DxDiag report or equivalent system details, plus crash-report files when available.
Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance and its Resident Evil Village Steam guide request system information and details such as issue timing and reproduction steps; the latter describes using DxDiag. Steam also recommends contacting the developer when common launch checks do not resolve the issue. The guidance here is for PC games generally; the Resident Evil Village instructions are specific to that game, and the game’s current support page and patch notes take precedence.
