Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

A PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD can work in a compatible PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, but it will run at PCIe 4.0 speeds rather than Gen 5 speeds. Before installing one, confirm that the specific socket supports PCIe NVMe, and check the drive’s physical fit and your motherboard’s slot configuration.
What speed will a Gen 5 SSD reach in a Gen 4 slot?
The slot’s PCIe generation sets the interface ceiling: a Gen 5 SSD in a Gen 4 slot negotiates a Gen 4 connection. SanDisk states that Gen 5 SSDs are backward compatible with Gen 4 slots, with performance capped at Gen 4 speeds (SanDisk). Intel lists signaling rates of 16 GT/s for PCIe 4.0 and 32 GT/s for PCIe 5.0; GT/s describes signaling, not guaranteed application throughput (Intel).
For scale, SanDisk gives theoretical interface figures of approximately 4 GB/s per lane for PCIe 5.0, or 16 GB/s across four lanes, compared with 8 GB/s across four lanes for Gen 4. These are interface-level theoretical figures, not promised SSD benchmark results. Real drive performance depends on the drive and workload.
Check the motherboard socket before installing
Do not assume that every M.2 socket on a motherboard has the same capabilities. Boards can have sockets with different PCIe generations, lane counts, CPU or chipset connections, and lane-sharing rules. Gen 5 support may also be limited to one particular socket, so check the motherboard manual for the exact M.2 slot you intend to use.

- BREAKTHROUGH PCIe 5.0 PERFORMANCE: Supercharge your workflow and gaming with PCIe 5.0, boasting up to 14,700/13,400 MB/s* sequential read/write speeds. Tackle massive files and power up your gaming with Gen5—twice as fast as the 990 PRO SSD.
- EVERY TASK, TURBOCHARGED: Speed past productivity limits. With random read/write speeds up to 1,850K/2,600K IOPS*, enjoy fast game loads, seamless AI apps, and efficient multitasking. Virtually no lag, no limits—just nonstop performance.
- THINK FAST, CREATE FASTER: With random read/write speeds of up to 1,850K/2,600K IOPS*, the 9100 PRO SSD fuels seamless AI content creation, swift loads, and smooth gameplay. Work, play, and create at lightning speed.
- SPEED, WHENEVER YOU NEED: From laptops to desktop PCs, experience blazing PCIe 5.0 speeds and up to 8TB of storage. Perfect for video editing, gaming, and creative tasks, with the compatibility to match your device.
- STAY COOL, RUN FAST: Push limits, not temperatures. A 5nm controller boosts power efficiency up to 49% over the 990 PRO SSD*, while advanced thermal control keeps performance smooth and reliable.
- Confirm protocol: The socket must support a PCIe NVMe SSD. M.2 describes a form factor; it does not by itself guarantee that a socket supports every M.2 drive protocol.
- Confirm generation and lanes: Check the slot’s documented PCIe generation and lane configuration, along with any sharing rules that could affect other slots or ports.
- Check platform details: The CPU and motherboard configuration can affect which slots are available and how they operate.
Intel describes modern PCIe M.2 SSDs as typically using four PCIe lanes. Consult the motherboard and drive documentation for the actual configuration of your components.
Check drive dimensions and heatsink clearance
Verify the SSD’s length and the height of any fitted heatsink against the motherboard’s mounting points, slot cover, and nearby components. An M.2 2280 drive is 80 mm long and 22 mm wide, but thickness can vary, especially with a heatsink. As one product-specific example, MSI lists its SPATIUM M570 as 80.00 × 22.00 × 3.5 mm without its heatsink and 80.40 × 23.00 × 20.40 mm with it. Those measurements apply to that model, not to Gen 5 SSDs generally (MSI SPATIUM M570 specifications).

Is a Gen 5 SSD a sensible choice for a Gen 4 system?
Consider the speed your current system can use, the workload and capacity you need, the drive’s price, and whether you expect to move it to a Gen 5 system later. Buying Gen 5 now may make sense if you plan to reuse the drive in a future Gen 5 host. If the current computer is its only planned host, compare Gen 5 and Gen 4 options at the speed the system supports; the newer interface alone does not establish better value for your use.
Manufacturer-rated figures illustrate why you should not treat a Gen 5 product rating as the speed you will get in a Gen 4 slot. MSI rates its SPATIUM M570 for sequential reads of up to 9,500 MB/s (1 TB) or 10,000 MB/s (2 TB), and sequential writes of up to 8,500 MB/s (1 TB) or 10,000 MB/s (2 TB). These are MSI’s ratings for that product, not a prediction of its performance when installed in a Gen 4 slot (MSI SPATIUM M570 specifications).

If the SSD is not detected
- Check the motherboard’s exact model and manual, then verify that the SSD is installed in an M.2 socket that supports PCIe NVMe.
- Review the documented CPU and slot configuration, including lane-sharing rules and any platform limitations.
- Check the SSD’s physical fit, mounting point, and heatsink clearance.
- If the drive still does not appear, consult the motherboard and SSD vendors for guidance specific to those components. A generation mismatch alone does not establish why a drive is undetected.
Some configurations involving M.2 add-in cards may have additional requirements. For example, ASUS describes an add-in-card case on specified W790 motherboards where support can depend on both motherboard and CPU and the slot’s PCIe speed may need to be configured to Gen 4. That is specific guidance for the ASUS Hyper M.2 card and named boards, not a required BIOS change for an ordinary M.2 SSD installation (ASUS support guidance).
