Overlapping scales contain chitin-based ridges, layers and other structures that interact with visible light, selectively strengthening some wavelengths and suppressing others. When the colour changes with the viewing or lighting angle, that angle-dependent effect is called iridescence—but not all structural colour is iridescent.
What makes butterfly wing scales produce colour?
A butterfly wing is covered with tiny, overlapping scales, rather like roof tiles. A 2023 review gives an approximate scale length of 300 micrometres; that is a general estimate, not a fixed size for every scale. Beneath their often vivid appearance, scales are chitin-based structures with features such as a lower lamina, longitudinal ridges, ridge lamellae, cross-ribs and spacers.
When parts of a scale are arranged at dimensions comparable to visible-light wavelengths, they can scatter and reflect light in ways that make waves interfere. Depending on the structure, interference strengthens some wavelengths and diminishes others. The colour we see is the result of that wavelength selection.
This is called structural colour because it arises from physical structure rather than solely from colour-producing molecules. Pigments may also contribute, so a butterfly’s colour should not automatically be attributed entirely to structure. The balance depends on the species, scale architecture and wing region.

How is structural colour different from iridescence?
Structural colour describes how microscopic architecture produces or modifies colour. Iridescence describes a particular visual effect: the reflected spectrum, and therefore the perceived colour, changes as the illumination or viewing angle changes. The two concepts overlap, but they are not synonyms. A structural colour can be relatively consistent across angles rather than conspicuously shifting.
Angle-dependent colour is especially noticeable when a butterfly moves: the angle between the wing, light source and viewer changes, altering which wavelengths are reflected most strongly. The result can be a shimmer or a shift in hue. The effect depends on the scale arrangement, not simply on whether a wing is labelled “structurally coloured.”

Why do different butterflies look so different?
There is no single structural-colour design shared by every butterfly. A 2023 review describes recurring architectures that include ridge multilayers, gyroids and thin films formed by the lower lamina. Their geometry, spacing, orientation and distribution influence both the reflected colour and how it changes with angle.
| Optical architecture or case | What the evidence shows | How to interpret the appearance |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge multilayers | Identified as one recurring optical architecture in the 2023 review. | Layered ridges can selectively reflect wavelengths; the precise colour and angular response depend on their arrangement. |
| Gyroid photonic crystals in green hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) | Research describes how crystal orientation and variation in scale and wing shapes help produce a matte green appearance and suppress the conspicuous iridescence expected from isolated crystals. | A structural colour can look relatively uniform rather than flashing through strong angle-dependent hues. |
| Lower-lamina thin films | Identified as a recurring architecture in the 2023 review. | A thin film can affect reflected light; its visible effect depends on the film and the rest of the scale’s structure. |
The green hairstreak is a useful counterexample to the idea that every structural colour must shimmer. A 2017 study analysed 912 gyroid crystals in three C. rubi wing scales. That is a count from those examined scales, not a census of the species. The researchers linked the matte appearance to crystal orientation and variation in the scales and wings.

By contrast, the bright, angle-dependent display often associated with Morpho butterflies illustrates how a different photonic arrangement can produce a more conspicuous colour shift. The comparison is about distinct optical cases, not a claim that every individual scale behaves identically or that all butterflies fit neatly into one of these examples.
How do the scales acquire their optical structures?
Scales form as the wing develops inside the pupa. Their ridges and other architectural features emerge during that process, creating the physical arrangement that later interacts with light.

MIT researchers used a window into developing Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) pupae and reflection phase microscopy to observe scale formation over time. Their account describes ridges developing along scales and connects ridge structure with colour and moisture shedding. This imaging offers a view of development; it should not be confused with seeing every nanoscale detail using an ordinary classroom microscope.
A 2024 study of iridescent and non-iridescent scales in Heliconius sara, alongside development in three distantly related butterfly species, reported denser actin bundles in iridescent scales, associated with greater reflective-ridge density. In experiments on H. sara, perturbing actin during later developmental stages caused near-total loss of structural colour. That is a finding for the species and experimental conditions studied, not proof that every butterfly builds its colours through an identical process.

What can you see with a microscope?
A student microscope can help reveal scale patterns and the overlapping arrangement of the wing surface. It is an observation aid, not an equivalent to advanced imaging methods used to resolve fine photonic architecture. The detailed ridges, layers and crystals responsible for structural colour may require techniques such as electron microscopy or specialized optical imaging.
That distinction matters when interpreting what you see: a visible pattern of scales is evidence of the wing’s surface organization, but it does not by itself show the full nanoscale structure that manipulates light.
Why are researchers interested in butterfly nanostructures?
Butterfly scales offer examples of how patterned materials can control light and surface properties. UNSW describes research connecting these nanostructures with biomimetic photonic materials, including possible optical communication waveguides and improved solar cells. MIT’s account discusses design directions such as optical sensors, rain- and heat-resistant surfaces, and iridescent windows.
These are research inspirations and potential applications, not evidence that a commercial product is available or that an engineered material already performs like a butterfly wing. The transferable idea is that carefully arranged structures can influence light and other surface behaviours.
