Choose the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release) if your books and reading routines are already tied to Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem and you want a conventional monochrome reader. Choose the Kobo Libra Colour if you want a colour e-ink display, physical page-turn buttons, optional stylus annotation, or direct borrowing from a supported library. These are different strengths, not a universal winner. “Kobo Libra” here means the Libra Colour, not an older Libra model.
At a glance: which reader fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Better fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Your existing Kindle purchases or services | Kindle Paperwhite | Staying with the ecosystem you already use is the lower-friction choice. Check that your content is accessible before switching; the available product information does not establish a complete transfer or service-compatibility matrix. |
| Colour covers, illustrations, or colour markup | Kobo Libra Colour | Kobo specifies a 7-inch colour E Ink Kaleido 3 screen and colour annotation. A page made for black-and-white display remains black and white; colour hardware does not recolour it. |
| Physical page-turn buttons | Kobo Libra Colour | Kobo lists page-turn buttons on the device. |
| Handwritten notes on eBooks | Kobo Libra Colour, if stylus annotation is important | It is compatible with Kobo Stylus 2, which is sold separately. This is not a comparison with a full notebook or tablet. |
| Borrowing eBooks directly from a library | Kobo Libra Colour, where supported | OverDrive support is limited to select countries, and available eBooks depend on the library’s catalogue and location. Check your library before buying. |
| Storage and water protection | Both have documented capability | Amazon lists 16 GB and describes the Paperwhite as waterproof. Kobo lists 32 GB and IPX8 protection for up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water. These specifications come from manufacturers and do not establish a complete real-world comparison. |
What the screens mean for reading
Paperwhite: monochrome reading
Amazon’s announcement for the 2024 Kindle lineup describes the Paperwhite as a monochrome device. It is the straightforward fit if your reading is primarily text and you do not need colour on the page.
Libra Colour: colour where the source has it
Kobo identifies the Libra Colour’s screen as a 7-inch colour E Ink Kaleido 3 display. Colour can matter for covers, illustrated pages, comics, and annotations. It does not make ordinary monochrome text or artwork appear in colour: Kobo explains that a page designed in black and white cannot gain colour simply because it is shown on a colour screen.
Buttons and annotation: a more hands-on Kobo
The Libra Colour has physical page-turn buttons, which may suit readers who prefer turning pages without tapping the screen. It is also compatible with Kobo Stylus 2 for annotation on eBooks. The stylus is sold separately, so do not assume it comes in the box; check the package contents for your region when purchasing.
#1 Best Overall
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
This makes the Libra Colour a useful choice for readers who specifically want colour markup or handwritten notes. It does not by itself establish that it replaces a dedicated note-taking tablet or notebook.
Library borrowing and file formats
OverDrive access depends on your location and library
Kobo advertises direct library borrowing through OverDrive and Libby integration, but OverDrive is available only in select countries and eBook availability varies by library location. Confirm that your country and local library catalogue support the books you want before treating this as a deciding advantage.

Kobo’s listed format support
Kobo’s factsheet lists EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, and MOBI for eBooks, along with image, text, and comic formats. Kobo’s store describes 15 natively supported file formats. These format listings do not answer every question about access to a reader’s existing purchases or subscriptions across ecosystems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage, water resistance, and price context
Amazon’s October 16, 2024 announcement gives the Paperwhite 16 GB of storage and describes it as waterproof. Kobo’s factsheet lists 32 GB for the Libra Colour and IPX8 protection for up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water. These are manufacturer-published specifications with different levels of detail; they are not a matched independent test of storage needs or water performance.

Kobo’s factsheet lists a USD $219.99 MSRP for the Libra Colour, but the factsheet does not state its year. Treat that as a published MSRP, not a current offer. Regional prices, bundles, stock, and live deals can change, so compare current listings in your market rather than relying on that figure as today’s price.

How to make the choice
- Start with your existing books and services. If your purchases, subscriptions, or habits are tied to Kindle, the Paperwhite is the simpler default. Before switching, verify access to the specific content and services you rely on.
- Decide whether colour changes your reading. Choose the Libra Colour if colour covers, illustrations, comics, or annotation matter; it will not add colour to pages designed in black and white.
- Check the features you will use. The Libra Colour is the one with physical page-turn buttons and Kobo Stylus 2 compatibility. Budget for the stylus separately if you want to annotate.
- Verify library support locally. If OverDrive is the reason you are considering Kobo, check both country availability and your library’s catalogue.
- Compare current regional listings. Confirm current price, stock, and package contents before purchase; the manufacturer specifications alone do not establish a current price or a head-to-head battery result.
