DRAM and NAND flash do different jobs: DRAM is fast, temporary working memory for data a processor is using now, while NAND flash is persistent storage for files and software that must remain when a device is off. Most phones and computers use both; they are complementary, not alternatives.
What is the difference between device memory and storage?
In everyday device language, “memory” often means RAM and “storage” means the space for apps, photos, and files. Technically, DRAM and NAND are both memory technologies, but their roles differ. DRAM holds active data for quick access; NAND flash stores data persistently.
Micron’s phone example makes the distinction concrete: low-power DRAM supports applications in use, while internal flash storage holds photos, videos, the operating system, and settings. Micron’s mobile memory and storage explainer describes that division.

Which devices use DRAM?
DRAM is used across computers, servers, networking and communications equipment, consumer electronics, automotive systems, and industrial equipment. Lower-power DRAM is commonly used in smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Micron’s DRAM product overview describes these application areas.

In a phone or computer, DRAM is the workspace for active tasks. Opening or switching among applications uses working memory; it is not where the device permanently keeps your photos or installed software.
Which devices use NAND flash?
NAND flash is used in SSDs, smartphones, tablets, computers, USB drives, and flash memory cards. In a phone, it typically provides internal storage; in a computer, it is the storage technology inside many SSDs. Micron’s NAND overview lists these kinds of applications.

Why a NAND chip is not always a complete storage product
A raw NAND chip is a component, not necessarily a ready-to-use drive. NAND storage needs controller and firmware functions to manage tasks such as error correction, bad blocks, and wear leveling. Micron states: “NAND requires a controller, either internal or external, and specific firmware for error code correction (ECC), bad block management, and wear leveling.” Managed NAND integrates a controller in the package; an SSD combines NAND with a controller and firmware. Possibly, but the technology alone does not tell you whether an upgrade is possible. Some computers accept replaceable DRAM modules or storage drives; other devices use components that are not user-replaceable. Check the exact model’s specifications and service documentation before buying a part, including supported capacity, interface, and form factor. A compatible DRAM module changes working-memory capacity; a compatible SSD changes persistent storage capacity. Neither upgrade substitutes for the other.
