For latency-sensitive gaming, a mouse’s dedicated 2.4 GHz USB receiver is the safest default; Bluetooth is useful when easy pairing and fewer dongles matter more than optimizing response. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is an emerging alternative, but the available evidence does not establish it as a broadly available, independently tested retail choice. The connection label alone cannot tell you which mouse will perform best: compare the specific model’s polling rate, measured latency, battery life, receiver, and compatibility.

What 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth, and UWB tell you—and what they don’t

These labels describe wireless connection technologies, not a complete measure of how quickly a mouse responds. For gaming, check the whole setup: the mouse, its radio and receiver, firmware, polling setting, and the computer it is paired with.

  • Dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver: A USB dongle communicates with its matching mouse. General buying guidance from RTINGS’ 2026 wireless gaming mouse recommendations favors a dedicated receiver for gaming. This is a broad recommendation, not a guarantee that every receiver-equipped mouse will outperform every Bluetooth model.
  • Bluetooth: The mouse connects through a host’s Bluetooth capability, which can be convenient when you want to avoid a dedicated receiver or pair with multiple devices. Performance depends on the particular mouse, firmware, host, and setup.
  • Ultra-Wideband (UWB): UWB is an emerging wireless path for gaming mice. A reference design and a recent report about a mouse using UWB show development activity, but do not establish a widely available consumer option or a controlled performance advantage.

The sources available here do not establish a universal Bluetooth polling-rate ceiling, a standard millisecond penalty, or a controlled three-way latency ranking. Avoid claims that all Bluetooth mice are limited to 125 Hz or that UWB is inherently faster in real gameplay.

Polling rate is not the same as end-to-end latency

Polling rate is how often the mouse reports its position and button presses to the computer. As Logitech’s polling-rate explainer describes, 1,000 Hz means 1,000 reports per second; 8,000 Hz means 8,000 reports per second. A higher rate shortens the nominal interval between reports, but it is not a complete measurement of click or movement latency from mouse to game.

“8K” therefore describes a nominal 8,000-report-per-second polling rate when supported and operating as specified. It does not mean an 8 kHz radio carrier, nor does it prove 0.125 ms end-to-end response. To compare actual responsiveness, look for measured click and motion latency for the exact mouse and note the testing method and settings.

How to compare the three connection options

Connection Best fit What to verify
Dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver Latency-sensitive gaming; the strongest general-purpose recommendation in the cited buyer guidance. Whether the receiver is included, model-specific polling modes, measured latency and test conditions, battery life at the chosen rate, interference guidance, and host compatibility.
Bluetooth Convenient pairing or avoiding a dedicated USB receiver. The mouse’s polling behavior, host Bluetooth implementation, measured latency for that model, device-pairing limits, and battery claims.
UWB Following an emerging technology, subject to verifying a specific product and its availability. Radio implementation and band, release and regional availability, compatible receiver, independently measured latency and interference performance, polling rate, battery life, and price.

Do not compare polling figures as if they were directly comparable latency tests. A mouse can report a high polling rate while its overall response still depends on other parts of the connection and system.

Why 2.4 GHz performance varies between mice

“2.4 GHz” does not specify one fixed polling rate or performance level. CHERRY rates the standard XTRFY M64 Wireless at 1,000 Hz and its M64 Pro Wireless at 8,000 Hz; both are 2.4 GHz models. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. The exact mouse and receiver implementation matter more than the shared band label.

For the M64 Pro, CHERRY specifies an 8K dongle in the box and up to 90 hours of battery life, with runtime dependent on polling rate and gaming style. Treat the 90-hour figure as a manufacturer estimate with those conditions, not a guaranteed runtime at every setting. CHERRY discusses its 8K models in a 2023 technical backgrounder.

Battery, interference, and compatibility trade-offs

Battery life

Higher polling rates can consume more power on wireless mice, according to Logitech’s polling-rate explainer. Check a manufacturer’s battery estimate at the polling setting you intend to use; an “up to” figure may depend on both settings and play style.

Radio coexistence

Do not infer interference performance solely from a band name. For a 2.4 GHz mouse, check the manufacturer’s guidance for receiver placement and nearby wireless devices. For a UWB product, confirm the actual radio implementation and look for independent testing under stated conditions rather than assuming the technology avoids interference in every environment.

Host and receiver compatibility

A dedicated receiver requires a compatible USB port or adapter and the receiver intended for that mouse. Bluetooth avoids that dedicated dongle, but its behavior depends in part on the computer’s Bluetooth implementation. For any UWB mouse, verify what receiver or host support it needs before treating it as a plug-and-play alternative.

Is UWB gaming-mouse technology available to buy?

UWB is not yet established here as a broadly available retail category. In September 2026, Tom’s Guide reported that the SteelSeries Rival Pro uses UWB in the 6 GHz band, rather than the 2.4 GHz connection common among gaming mice. That is secondary reporting, not an official specification page or confirmation of current retail availability: see Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 report and verify official product details and regional stock before making a purchase decision.

Separately, Spark Micro’s 2024 SR1020 UWB mouse reference-design brief describes an engineering design, not a consumer mouse comparison. Its claim of “20x the bandwidth of 2.4GHz” applies to the vendor’s design brief; it should not be read as evidence that a UWB mouse is 20 times faster or more responsive.

Which connection should you choose?

  • Choose a dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver if gaming response is the priority. Compare latency tests and polling settings for the actual mouse rather than assuming all 2.4 GHz models perform alike.
  • Choose Bluetooth if avoiding a dedicated receiver or convenient device pairing matters more to you. Check model-specific responsiveness rather than relying on a blanket latency claim.
  • Consider UWB only after verifying the exact product—including official specifications, receiver requirements, independent measurements, and availability in your region. The current evidence does not support treating it as a proven universal upgrade.
