To pair a Nintendo Switch 2 controller, attach Joy-Con 2 to the console, or use HOME Menu > Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. To check a paired controller’s charge, open Controllers on the HOME Menu; the screen shows its approximate battery life.
Pair Joy-Con 2 by attaching them to the console
With the Switch 2 powered on, slide each Joy-Con 2 onto the corresponding side of the console until securely attached. They are then ready to use and paired wirelessly as well, so you can detach them and continue playing. Nintendo documents this as the simplest pairing method. Pair a controller wirelessly

- On the HOME Menu, select Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- On the Joy-Con 2 you want to pair, hold the SYNC button for at least one second. The player LED indicators remain lit when pairing succeeds.
- Set the grip the console should recognize. For both controllers held together, press L on the left Joy-Con 2 and R on the right, or press ZL and ZR. For individual horizontal play, press SL and SR on each controller.
Pairing registers the controllers, but the grip buttons tell the console how you intend to hold them. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 pairing instructions.
Pair a Switch 2 Pro Controller
- On the HOME Menu, select Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- Hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. Its player LED indicators remain lit when it is paired.
For the USB method, turn on the console and connect the controller with its included USB-C cable, or put the console in the dock and connect the controller to the dock by USB. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller pairing instructions.

Pair by USB or charging grip
Joy-Con 2 with the Charging Grip
Attach the Joy-Con 2 to the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (model BEE-010), then connect the grip to the Switch 2 dock with the included USB-C cable. How many controllers can be paired?
Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be paired to Switch 2. The number that can be connected simultaneously can vary with controller type and the features in use. Joy-Con 2 pairing FAQ and Pro Controller pairing FAQ.

Check a paired controller’s battery
Open Controllers from the HOME Menu. Nintendo says this screen displays the approximate battery life for each controller actively paired to that Switch 2. It does not promise a numeric percentage for each controller, so treat the indicator as an estimate rather than an exact readout. Nintendo’s battery-life instructions.
Do not confuse it with the console battery
The console’s battery percentage is a separate display. Press ZL and ZR together to show it temporarily; in handheld or tabletop mode, you can also tap the battery icon at the top right. To keep the console percentage visible on the HOME Menu, go to System Settings > System > System Battery (%) and turn it on. These controls display the console’s charge, not a controller percentage. Charge Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller
Charge Joy-Con 2
- Attached to the console: Connect the Switch 2 to its AC adapter and keep the console powered on or in Sleep Mode while the Joy-Con 2 are attached.
- Detached: Attach the Joy-Con 2 to the optional BEE-010 Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip. Connect the grip to the dock with its included USB cable, or connect it directly to the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (NGN-01).
Nintendo estimates about 3½ hours for a full Joy-Con 2 charge. The Charging Grip is sold separately. Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 charging instructions.
Charge a Switch 2 Pro Controller
Connect the included USB charging cable to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock and the controller, or connect the controller directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter with that cable. If a Joy-Con 2 will not turn on or charge normally
For a Joy-Con 2 that will not turn on, shows an inaccurate battery indicator, or loses charge unusually quickly, Nintendo recommends checking the power connection and resetting the controller before seeking service.
- Confirm you are using the Switch 2 AC adapter marked NGN-01, and check the adapter for damage.
- Press the controller’s SYNC button once to reset it.
- Attach the controller to the console again and charge it.
- Check the charge indication under HOME Menu > Controllers.
Nintendo estimates about 3½ hours for Joy-Con 2 to charge fully. If a controller charges but will not reach a full charge or its charge does not last, Nintendo directs users to service. Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 power troubleshooting.

Can older Switch controllers work with Switch 2?
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. The older Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. Nintendo says the original Joy-Con Charging Grip and Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way) cannot be used with Joy-Con 2; use the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010) if you want to charge detached Joy-Con 2.
