If your iPhone earpiece crackles, first remove any case or screen protector that could obstruct the receiver and check the opening for dirt. Then compare a call through the receiver with speakerphone and, if needed, try again later or somewhere else. Apple says crackling or static during calls can be related to network reception; the symptom alone does not establish a hardware fault. Restarting or updating iOS may be reasonable in specific circumstances, but neither is a crackling-specific fix in Apple’s guidance.
Why is my iPhone earpiece crackling?
Crackling or static can arise from more than one source. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance asks you to check the receiver opening, compare call audio with speakerphone, and consider whether the problem changes with the network or location. These checks can help narrow down what to try next, but they do not prove a particular cause.
Start by distinguishing where and when the sound occurs:
- Only through the receiver during calls: check that the receiver opening is not blocked or dirty, then compare with speakerphone.
- During a call on speakerphone too: retry later or from another location. Apple says network or reception could be involved when crackling or static persists during calls.
- In other audio as well: check sound using the Ringtone and Alerts slider, then follow the steps below. If the issue remains, Apple says service may be needed.
What should I check first?
Remove anything that might cover the receiver
Temporarily remove the case, film, or screen protector and inspect the receiver opening for visible blockage. Apple recommends removing these accessories during sound troubleshooting.

Clean visible dirt gently, if needed
If you see dirt in the receiver opening, Apple’s instruction is to use a small, clean, dry brush with soft bristles. This is optional; cleaning is not a guarantee that the crackling will stop. Do not insert objects or use liquids or force.
Check sound with the Ringtone and Alerts slider
Open the iPhone’s sound settings and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider to test sound. Apple says that if the speaker control is dimmed or no sound is produced, the iPhone may need service. The slider check is a general sound check, not a diagnosis of the earpiece.

Does speakerphone or another location change the sound?
Make a call and compare listening through the normal receiver with speakerphone. Also consider whether the crackling occurs on one call or continues when you try again later or in another location. If the noise persists during calls, Apple suggests trying again later or from somewhere else because network or reception may be involved.
A change between receiver and speakerphone, or between locations, is useful troubleshooting information to share with Apple Support. It does not by itself confirm a network issue or a faulty component.

Should I restart my iPhone if the earpiece is crackling?
A normal restart is a reasonable basic step, but Apple’s force-restart instructions are for a different situation: an iPhone that is unresponsive and cannot be turned off and back on normally. A force restart is not Apple’s crackling-specific remedy, so you do not need to use it solely because the earpiece sounds distorted.
If the phone is unresponsive and cannot be shut down normally, follow Apple’s model-specific force-restart instructions. For the iPhone models covered by its current guide, Apple says to press and quickly release volume up, press and quickly release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Check Apple’s instructions for your model rather than assuming the button sequence is universal.

Can an iOS update fix crackling sound?
Apple’s general iPhone support page says an iOS update might fix an issue. That makes installing an available update a reasonable general troubleshooting step, but Apple’s sound-quality guidance does not establish that an update specifically fixes earpiece crackling. Contact Apple Support or arrange service if crackling continues after you have checked the receiver opening, compared call audio, and tried the relevant general troubleshooting steps.
