If you are unsure or can comfortably wait, compare the price with past offers and check the seller’s refund rules before deciding.
Start with whether the game fits you
Ratings and popularity cannot tell you whether you will enjoy a particular game. Consider the experience you actually want: genre, mechanics, story, challenge, or playing with other people. If your interest is uncertain or mostly driven by launch buzz, waiting gives you time to learn more without paying the current price.

Weigh playing now against waiting
| Factor | Buying now makes more sense when… | Waiting makes more sense when… |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | You are eager to start, or friends will be playing together now. | There is no near-term reason to play. |
| Budget | The price fits comfortably within your discretionary spending. | The purchase would put pressure on more important expenses. |
| Game condition | Recent evidence suggests the game runs acceptably on your platform. | Performance or unresolved issues remain a concern. |
| Price context | You are comfortable paying today’s price even after checking past offers. | The current price is high relative to past lows and you can wait. |
| Refund protection | The seller’s current policy applies to your purchase and offers relevant protection. | The purchase is not refundable, or you may not meet the policy’s conditions. |
Estimate how much you will play—but do not use hours as the whole verdict
Main-story length, optional content, replayability, and multiplayer longevity can help you picture how you might use a game. They measure different things: a long game is not necessarily more enjoyable, and multiplayer longevity depends on whether you want to keep playing it. There is no established universal dollars-per-hour threshold that determines whether a game is worth its price. Treat expected playtime as one input alongside enjoyment, budget, and timing—not as a pass-or-fail formula.
Check reception and technical condition for your platform
Look at reviews and recent player feedback relevant to the platform you plan to use, especially when performance is a concern. Steam’s store page presents positive and negative review data as both recent 30-day and lifetime aggregates, according to its User Reviews documentation. Recent reviews and lifetime reviews describe different time windows; neither guarantees that the game will suit you or run well in your particular setup.

Put today’s price in historical context
A price-history service can help you judge whether the current offer is unusually high or close to a past low. IsThereAnyDeal documents price overviews, historical lows, and price histories, with country and shop parameters in its API documentation. Check that you are comparing the same platform, region, edition, and seller. Past discounts provide context, not a reliable forecast of when—or whether—a future sale will happen.
Read the actual storefront’s refund terms
Refund rules vary by seller and can depend on purchase type, time, playtime, region, and applicable law. Check the current policy and whether it covers your transaction before paying. A refund option is a limited safety net, not a universal trial period.

Steam
Steam says it will refund a game requested within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours; the playtime includes online, offline, and shared-library play. Valve also says requests outside those stated rules may be submitted for review. See Steam Support’s Common Refund Questions. For pre-orders, Steam says a refund can be requested any time before release; after release, the stated standard is within two weeks of release and under two hours of playtime. Check Steam’s pre-order refund guidance for the current terms.
Epic Games Store
Epic says paid games are generally self-refundable or refundable when eligible. It also says an eligible recent purchase that goes on sale may be refunded and repurchased at the sale price. Eligibility conditions apply, so do not assume every transaction qualifies; consult the Epic Games Store Refund Policy.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the decision with a short checklist
- Confirm the fit: Name what you want from the game and check that it offers that experience.
- Set your limit: Decide whether the listed price fits your discretionary budget without displacing a more important expense.
- Check your timing: Identify a real reason to play now, such as playing with friends, or recognize that waiting costs you little.
- Check current condition: Review recent feedback for your platform, not just an overall score.
- Compare prices fairly: Look at past offers for the same region, seller, platform, and edition; do not treat a historical low as a promise.
- Verify refund eligibility: Read the seller’s current policy for this purchase before relying on it.
If the game is a strong personal fit, the price is comfortable, and playing now matters to you, paying full price can be reasonable. If one of those conditions is missing—especially if you are not eager to start—waiting is a sound choice, even though no one can guarantee the next sale’s timing or price.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
