Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For speaker trouble, remove anything covering the openings, check for visible dirt, and test the Ringtone and Alerts slider. Call-only crackling may be related to reception; persistent distortion after these checks may need service.
Identify where the crackling happens
Try the same audio route that normally produces the noise, then compare it with other available routes: built-in speaker playback, a call on speakerphone, and headphones. Note whether the problem occurs in one app, across playback generally, or only during calls. This distinction helps narrow down which checks to try; it does not identify a specific fault.
| What you hear | First check |
|---|---|
| Ringtone, media, or other built-in speaker audio sounds distorted | Check for obstructions or dirt around the speaker and receiver openings, then test the Ringtone and Alerts slider. |
| Static or crackling occurs during calls | Try another call later or from another location; network or reception could be involved. |
| Crackling occurs only through headphones | Inspect the accessory, connection, cable, and earbud meshes; then reconnect and check iOS and restart. |
| The problem continues after the relevant checks | Arrange service; the cause cannot be diagnosed remotely from the symptom alone. |
Check the iPhone’s built-in speaker and receiver
- Turn off Silent mode and Do Not Disturb. Then remove the case, film, or screen protector if it could cover a speaker or receiver opening.
- Inspect the openings. Look for visible dirt or blockage at the speaker opening and, where applicable, the receiver.
- Clean gently only if needed. Apple Support advises: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure the brush is clean and dry.” Do not use liquids, needles, sharp picks, or compressed air based on this guidance.
- Test the alert sound. Open Settings and go to Sounds or Sounds & Haptics. Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth to check whether the sound is still distorted.
If there is no sound or the speaker button is dimmed, Apple says the speaker may need service. Cleaning may remove visible debris, but it does not establish or fix every cause of distorted sound. Apple’s iPhone sound troubleshooting steps explain these checks.
When crackling happens only during calls
If other iPhone audio sounds normal but calls crackle or have static, try again later or from a different location. Apple identifies network or reception as possible causes of call audio problems; this is a possibility, not proof that the network is responsible or that the iPhone speaker is damaged. Apple Support’s sound troubleshooting guidance covers this check.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
When crackling happens only with headphones
- Check the port, cable, connector, remote, and earbud meshes for debris or damage.
- Reconnect the headphones firmly. Remove the case if it prevents a secure connection.
- Make sure iOS is current and restart the iPhone.
These steps follow Apple’s headphone troubleshooting checklist. If the noise also occurs through the built-in speaker or during calls, return to those checks rather than assuming the headphones are the cause.

Apple notes that an iOS update might resolve an issue. Updating or restarting is a general troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed audio repair. If the iPhone is frozen and needs a force restart, Apple’s sequence is: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the iPhone begins to restart.
