For ordinary CPU thermal paste, clean both the processor’s heat spreader and the cooler’s cold plate, then let them dry before applying fresh paste. Use a lint-free cloth; isopropyl alcohol (IPA) can help remove residue. “Polishing paste,” however, may mean a separate metal polish. If that is what you used, identify the product and follow its label and the cooler maker’s guidance rather than applying thermal paste over an unknown film.
Before you start: identify the residue
The usual cleaning procedure applies to thermal compound—the material between the CPU heat spreader and cooler base that helps transfer heat. Intel explains its role in its thermal-interface-material guidance. If the residue is a metal-polishing product or another substance, the thermal-paste cleaning instructions below do not establish that IPA or any other cleaner is safe for it. Check the product label and cooler manufacturer’s instructions first.
What you need
- A lint-free cloth, microfiber cloth, or other non-shedding wipe.
- Isopropyl alcohol, if needed and compatible with the product instructions.
- Fresh thermal paste for reinstallation, unless the cooler has factory-applied paste.
Noctua says some of its thermal compounds can be removed with a dry lint-free tissue; IPA or its cleaning wipes are also options. Intel and AMD recommend IPA with a suitable cloth. Follow the instructions for the specific paste and cooler rather than assuming one solvent or technique fits every product.
Clean the CPU and cold plate
- Shut down the PC and remove the cooler. Follow the cooler’s installation or removal instructions. AMD warns that hardened thermal grease can make removal difficult and may damage the CPU, so do not force a stuck cooler; use care and the manufacturer’s method. See AMD’s cooler-removal guidance.
- Wipe the CPU heat spreader. Remove the old compound with a lint-free or non-shedding cloth. Use IPA if the compound does not come away with dry wiping, following the relevant product directions. Intel’s cleaning guidance is here; AMD’s is here.
- Wipe the cooler cold plate. Clean the surface that contacts the CPU as well; removing paste from only one side leaves the thermal interface dirty. Noctua’s product guidance allows dry wiping for its own compounds and also describes IPA or cleaning wipes: Noctua thermal-paste and cleaning FAQ.
- Handle hardened residue gently. For solidified thermal compound, iFixit describes gently loosening the residue, then wiping the remaining material with a coffee filter or lint-free cloth and IPA at 90% concentration or greater. Avoid metal blades and abrasive scrubbing that could scratch the contact surface. See iFixit’s thermal-paste guide.
- Let both surfaces dry. Before reassembly, the CPU and cooler base should be clean, dry, and free of compound residue or grease, as Noctua specifies.
Apply fresh paste and reinstall the cooler
Once a cooler has been removed, use fresh thermal paste rather than relying on the disturbed old layer. Apply it according to the paste maker’s directions, then reinstall the cooler using its mounting instructions. Intel’s general guidance describes a pea- or rice-sized amount and letting cooler pressure spread it, but paste recommendations can vary by product. If a new cooler already has paste pre-applied, Intel says not to add more. Consult Intel’s thermal-paste guidance and the instructions supplied with your paste and cooler.

Should you use a dedicated thermal-compound cleaner?
It is optional for routine cleaning. Arctic Silver describes ArctiClean as a two-step cleaner for thermal grease or pads and surface preparation, but its page is old; check current product directions before use: Arctic Silver ArctiClean. Do not assume a specialty cleaner—or IPA—is suitable for unidentified polishing paste. For ordinary thermal grease, choose a method supported by the paste or cooler maker that leaves both mating surfaces clean and dry.
