Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo enable 8,000 Hz polling, first confirm that your exact mouse supports it in the connection mode you use, then select 8K in the manufacturer’s utility or with the model’s documented control. Test it in your usual game or task. If battery life, wireless reliability, or smooth performance suffers, step down to 4K, 2K, or 1K and keep the lowest rate that meets your needs.
What an 8K polling rate changes
A mouse’s polling rate is how often it reports its position and button state to the computer. At 8,000 reports per second, the theoretical interval between reports is 0.125 milliseconds. For comparison, 1,000 Hz has a 1 ms interval, 2,000 Hz has a 0.5 ms interval, and 4,000 Hz has a 0.25 ms interval. These intervals describe report frequency—not a guaranteed reduction in total input latency. Corsair says 8,000 Hz sends data eight times as frequently as 1,000 Hz, but that rate comparison is not a real-world latency or performance benchmark (Corsair’s polling-rate explainer).
More frequent reports can mean more CPU work, and wireless operation at a higher rate uses more power. The practical effect varies with the mouse, firmware, receiver, computer, game, and workload. There is no universal best setting or established CPU, frame-rate, or battery-life penalty that applies to every setup.
Check that your mouse supports 8K in your connection mode
Look up the exact model in its manufacturer’s current specifications or support documentation. Confirm that 8,000 Hz is supported over the connection you plan to use—wired, 2.4 GHz wireless, or another listed mode. A product’s advertised maximum may not apply to every connection, receiver, or configuration, and some mice start at a lower default rate.

Use the matching manufacturer utility or the hardware control documented for your model. Controls are not interchangeable across brands or models. For example, ASUS documents a button sequence for the ROG Harpe II Ace: hold the pairing button and press the backward button to cycle polling settings. ASUS lists 125, 250, 500, 1,000 Hz (the default), 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 Hz for that mouse (ASUS ROG Harpe II Ace specifications). Do not assume the same sequence works on another mouse.
MSI identifies PortalX as the configuration utility for its VERSA 300 WIRELESS 8K. The model’s product page lists USB, Bluetooth, and 2.4 GHz modes; check the documentation for the rate supported in the mode you intend to use (MSI VERSA 300 WIRELESS 8K).

Set up the mouse and receiver for a reliable connection
For a wireless mouse
- Use the required receiver. If the manufacturer specifies a particular receiver or dongle for high polling, connect that one rather than assuming Bluetooth or another receiver will provide the same rate.
- Place the receiver as the manufacturer recommends. For its wireless HyperPolling dongle, Razer recommends a line-of-sight position within 30 cm of the mouse and away from active USB 3 hubs, which can create 2.4 GHz interference. Follow the guidance for your own mouse and receiver (Razer HyperPolling guidance).
- Select 8K using the documented control or utility. Verify that the selected rate applies to the connection mode currently in use.
For a wired mouse
Connect it directly to a computer port if the manufacturer advises doing so. Razer recommends connecting a wired HyperPolling mouse directly to a native USB port. Corsair recommends a port connected to the motherboard chipset for stability and cautions against intermediary hubs, docks, and third-party chipsets. These are vendor recommendations, not evidence that every hub or dock will fail (Razer HyperPolling guidance; Corsair polling-rate guidance).
Compare 8K with lower rates on your own computer
Start with the game or task where you expect the higher report frequency to matter. Compare 8K against the lower rates your mouse supports, using the same connection and workload. Look for a practical improvement in cursor or aim smoothness, while also checking for unstable wireless behavior, uneven frame pacing, or other performance problems. A shorter theoretical interval by itself does not establish a noticeable benefit.

The open-source driver automatically identifies your computer system, and allows for DPI adjustment, rate of return, competitive mode, customized buttons, macro recording, personalized key mapping and other advanced functions.
- Keep 8K if the connection is stable, performance remains smooth, and you value the additional report frequency.
- Try 4K, then 2K or 1K if you notice stutter, worse frame pacing, unreliable wireless behavior, or battery drain that matters to you. Retest after each change.
- Use a lower rate outside demanding tasks if the extra frequency is not useful there and conserving wireless power is more important.
Razer cautions that in CPU-bound situations a computer may lack the resources to process 8,000 reports per second; Corsair likewise warns that higher polling rates increase CPU usage. Corsair suggests an Intel i7 9th generation or AMD Ryzen 7 2nd generation (or equivalent) as minimum guidance for 8,000 Hz. Treat that as Corsair’s recommendation, not a universal minimum or guarantee: the useful setting depends on the whole system and workload (Razer HyperPolling support guidance; Corsair polling-rate guidance).
What to expect from wireless battery life
Higher polling on a wireless mouse uses more power, but the amount of additional drain depends on the product and how it is used. No fixed number of hours saved by lowering the polling rate can be applied across mice. If runtime matters more than maximum report frequency, use a lower supported rate when you do not need 8K.

Read battery-life claims in their stated context. MSI advertises up to 196 hours for the VERSA 300 WIRELESS 8K, with usage affecting results and LED lighting effects off. That is a product-specific, qualified figure; MSI does not establish it as runtime at 8K (MSI VERSA 300 WIRELESS 8K).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep polling rate separate from other performance settings
Some compatible mice offer additional settings that affect power or performance independently of polling rate. On the ASUS ROG Harpe II Ace, Zone mode is a separate option that can also increase power consumption. Do not treat it as part of the polling-rate setting; change it only if your model supports it and you have a reason to do so (ASUS ROG Harpe II Ace specifications).
