Find your assigned absentee ballot drop box through Michigan’s official drop-box page or Michigan.gov/Vote. Put your completed ballot in its signed return envelope and deposit it in the assigned box in your community by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
How to find the drop box assigned to you
Michigan assigns drop boxes by city or township. Use the state’s drop-box lookup for current election information; do not assume that any box in Michigan will accept your ballot. The state says you must use your assigned box.
Locations are entered into the Qualified Voter File by municipal clerks, which supports the voter lookup. Because locations can vary by municipality and election, rely on the current official lookup rather than an old address list.
How to return your ballot
- Complete your absentee ballot and place it in the return envelope.
- Sign the envelope as directed.
- Deposit the envelope in your assigned community drop box no later than 8 p.m. on Election Day.
Michigan says drop boxes are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, beginning 40 days before each election. The box must receive the ballot by the Election Day cutoff; that is separate from the deadline for mailing a ballot.

Can you drop off someone else’s ballot?
No. Michigan’s drop-box FAQ says voters may put only their own ballot in a drop box. The state has separate, limited rules for who may deliver a ballot to a clerk. Those rules do not change the drop-box restriction. If you need someone else to help return a ballot, check the state’s elections and voting FAQ and ask your local clerk which delivery rule applies.
What safeguards does Michigan describe?
The state describes drop boxes as heavy-duty steel, locked, bolted to the ground, and covered by security cameras. Official clerk staff who have taken a legal oath collect ballots at least once a day and transfer them securely to the clerk’s office, where they remain stored until processing begins. These are the safeguards described in Michigan’s Election Fact Center; they do not confirm whether a particular ballot was received or counted. Use Michigan.gov/Vote to track absentee ballot status.

Statewide municipal standards also address how many boxes municipalities provide, where they are placed, accessibility, installation, and monitoring. The Bureau of Elections’ November 2023 AV Drop Box Requirements and Recommendations specifies at least one box per municipality and at least one per 15,000 registered voters, with equitable distribution and public accessibility. It states that all drop boxes must use video monitoring beginning January 1, 2026.

Michigan lists return options including mail, a clerk’s office, an early voting site, and an Election Day polling location. Check the state’s absentee voting page and your local clerk’s instructions for the procedure at your location.

Detroit voters cannot tabulate absentee ballots at Detroit polling places on Election Day. The state identifies the drop box or local clerk’s office as alternatives. Check current Detroit and local clerk instructions before choosing a return method.
