Choose the Steam Deck if handheld play is your priority and you can accept Mojang’s current compatibility caveat. Choose a Windows gaming laptop if you want a conventional PC setup—but check that its exact processor, memory, and dedicated graphics meet the game’s published minimum requirements. Mojang said on October 1, 2026, that Minecraft Dungeons II should now be playable on Steam Deck, while warning that some issues may remain and full Steam Deck verification is still a future goal.
What platforms can play Minecraft Dungeons II?
Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026. It is available for Steam and Windows, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Official platform and launch information.
This comparison focuses on two PC-shaped choices: Steam Deck, a portable handheld, and a Windows gaming laptop, a conventional PC that can also be carried but is generally used on a desk or table.
How compatible is Minecraft Dungeons II with Steam Deck?
In an official update dated October 1, 2026, Mojang wrote: “The game should now be playable on Steam Deck.” The same update cautions that issues may occur, including missing on-screen keyboard functionality, and says more improvements are planned to bring full Steam Deck verification. That is a dated compatibility update—not confirmation that the game has received full verification. Mojang’s Steam Deck update.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
The note identifies a practical limitation: if an in-game task requires typing, the on-screen keyboard may not work as expected. Mojang does not specify a Steam Deck hardware requirement in this update, so there is no official Deck-specific hardware threshold to compare with a laptop’s listed PC specifications.
Xbox describes Minecraft Dungeons II as handheld optimized for supported handhelds and lists Windows 10/11 and Game Pass access. That general handheld label does not replace Mojang’s more specific Steam Deck caveat. Xbox game listing.

What Windows laptop meets the published minimums?
Steam lists these minimum Windows PC requirements for Minecraft Dungeons II. They are minimum specifications, not recommended settings or a promise of particular frame rates or image quality. Steam’s system requirements.
| Component | Published minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit, version 1703 or newer |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 3 2200G equivalent |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon RX 560 equivalent dedicated graphics card with at least 2 GB VRAM |
| DirectX | Version 11 |
Before buying or using a laptop, check its exact configuration rather than relying on a product family name. Confirm the CPU and RAM, and look for a dedicated GPU that meets the listed graphics class and VRAM requirement. The minimum calls for dedicated graphics; it does not establish that a laptop with integrated graphics will run the game.

Which device fits the way you want to play?
| What matters most | Steam Deck | Windows gaming laptop |
|---|---|---|
| Where you play | Handheld play is its defining advantage; choose it if you want a portable form you can use without a desk. | Portable as a PC, but its conventional setup is better suited to playing with a table or other stable surface. |
| Compatibility evidence | Mojang’s October 1 update says it should be playable, with possible issues and full verification still planned. | Compare the exact machine with Steam’s published Windows minimums; meeting minimums does not establish a particular performance level. |
| Input and setup | Handheld controls suit play without a separate keyboard, but the reported on-screen keyboard issue matters if typing is needed. | A laptop offers a built-in keyboard and trackpad, with the option to connect other peripherals; comfort depends on your setup. |
| Who you play with | The game’s co-op options may make a shared screen or online setup relevant to your choice. | The same co-op modes can influence whether you prefer a laptop’s conventional PC setup or another display arrangement. |
How co-op affects the choice
The official FAQ describes Minecraft Dungeons II as an action-RPG with couch co-op, online cross-play, and mixed co-op. Steam also lists split-screen co-op and Remote Play Together. Official FAQ and Steam listing.
Think about whether you expect to play alone, share a screen locally, or join friends online. Those modes are game features, not evidence that either device offers a better co-op experience; the useful distinction here is which form and setup will suit the people and place you have in mind.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Make the purchase decision
- Lean toward Steam Deck if handheld portability is the deciding factor and you are comfortable with Mojang’s documented, not-yet-fully-verified status.
- Lean toward a Windows laptop if you want a conventional PC setup or broader Windows use, but verify the specific laptop’s processor, RAM, dedicated GPU, VRAM, operating system, and DirectX support against Steam’s minimums.
- Do not choose on assumed performance. The published requirements and compatibility note do not provide a head-to-head benchmark, comparable battery figures, or a device-specific performance guarantee.
Because Mojang’s compatibility statement is dated October 1, 2026, check its latest Steam Deck update near the time you buy or start playing. Laptop configurations also vary, so verify the specification sheet for the exact model rather than assuming that every gaming laptop qualifies.
