To get more time from your current charge, reduce power use in Windows 11: choose a more efficient power mode, enable Energy saver, dim the display, shorten screen and sleep timeouts, and limit unnecessary background activity. These changes can help runtime, but the amount varies by laptop and use. Battery-care habits are a separate issue: they can help slow long-term capacity loss, not extend today’s charge.
How can I make my laptop battery last longer?
Start with the controls in Settings > System > Power & battery. Make the adjustments below one at a time so you can see which ones suit your work. Windows settings and available options can differ by device and Windows build.

Choose a more efficient power mode
Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery. Under Power mode, choose Best power efficiency when unplugged if you can accept some performance reduction. Balanced is a middle ground; Best performance prioritizes speed over power savings. If the control is missing or unavailable, the PC’s hardware or manufacturer configuration may determine the mode. Turn on Energy saver
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. Set a battery threshold for it to turn on automatically, or enable it manually in Settings or Quick Settings. Energy saver reduces some system activity and background processes, so syncing or other background behavior may be reduced. Microsoft’s Windows battery guidance describes the control.

Reduce display power
In Settings > System > Display, lower brightness to a comfortable level. If available, open Advanced display and choose a lower refresh rate that still works for you; motion may look less smooth, but the display may use less power. Dark mode may save power on OLED screens, but the benefit does not apply equally to every LCD laptop. Microsoft lists display-related battery tips.

Shorten screen and sleep timeouts
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Some Windows 11 builds show Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set shorter intervals for turning off the screen and putting the PC to sleep on battery, choosing times that do not interrupt your work. This prevents the display and active system from running unnecessarily when you step away.

Check which apps use power
Under Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, look for apps with substantial usage. For supported apps, restrict background activity only when you do not need their syncing or notifications. For eligible graphics-heavy apps, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select an app, choose Options, then choose Power saving if offered. The selection can reduce performance in that app.

Turn off connections you are not using
Use Airplane mode when you do not need internet, Bluetooth, or other wireless connections, or switch off only the unused radio. You will save the power those connections would otherwise use, but lose access to them while they are off.

Use battery-focused video settings if available
For video playback, check Settings > Apps > Video playback and choose Optimize for battery life if the option appears. A lower-resolution playback option may save additional power. Both choices reduce video quality, so use them only when the tradeoff is acceptable.

What settings drain a laptop battery?
There is no single setting that drains every laptop fastest. A bright display, high refresh rate, long periods before sleep, active wireless connections, background syncing, and demanding apps can all contribute to power use. Use Battery usage to identify apps on your own PC rather than assuming a particular app or setting is responsible.

Microsoft’s guidance provides settings, not a universal measured number of minutes or percentage gained. Runtime depends on the laptop, battery condition, workload, and which changes are practical for you.
Should I leave Energy saver on?
You can leave Energy saver on when battery runtime matters more than unrestricted background activity. It reduces some system activity, which can mean less frequent syncing or fewer timely notifications. If that interferes with work, set it to activate at a chosen battery threshold or enable it only when you need extra runtime.

Why is my laptop battery draining so fast?
First check whether the cause is high power use or diminished battery capacity. Review Battery usage for apps consuming substantial power, then consider whether brightness, refresh rate, sleep timing, wireless connections, or background activity explain the pattern. If normal use still produces unusually short runtime, the battery may have lost capacity as it aged.
Generate a Windows battery report

Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.

Run
powercfg /batteryreport. -
Note the saved HTML file path shown by Windows, open the report, and inspect Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage for capacity and usage information.
The report can provide clues about capacity and usage, but it cannot restore worn capacity. If the figures and your usage pattern point to degradation, contact the laptop maker or a qualified repair provider. A replacement battery must match the exact laptop model and compatible part number. Microsoft documents the battery-report command.

How do I keep the battery healthy over time?
Runtime per charge and long-term battery health are different goals. Settings reduce power use now; charging and temperature habits may help slow the gradual loss of capacity in a lithium-ion battery. Microsoft says cell capacity declines after a number of charge-and-discharge cycles and recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges. When practical, keep the charge roughly between 20% and 80% to help extend battery life and performance; this is general guidance, not a guarantee of a particular lifespan.
For long-term storage, Microsoft recommends about 40%–60% charge in a cool, dry place, with periodic checks so the battery does not deeply discharge. High temperatures can accelerate deterioration. If a battery swells beyond the laptop enclosure, stop using it, handle it cautiously, and do not press or puncture it. Read Microsoft’s battery-care guidance.
Does this apply to Windows 10?
This walkthrough focuses on Windows 11; settings and labels can differ on Windows 10 and among manufacturers. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs still work, but Microsoft says they no longer receive free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Microsoft’s support notice has the details.
