For ChatGPT, Claude, personal-account Microsoft Copilot, and Gemini Apps, the controls below can limit future conversations from being used to improve models—but they do not necessarily delete saved chats, undo training that has already happened, or stop every use of your data for safety and service operations.
Before you change a setting: know what it does
A training opt-out is not the same as deleting conversations or removing information already incorporated into a trained model. Providers may still process data for service operation, safety, abuse prevention, feedback, or legal compliance under their policies. The exact scope also depends on the product and account type.
- Apply the setting in every service. There is no single control here that changes settings across providers.
- Read “future conversations” literally. The documented controls are generally prospective; do not assume that switching one off erases past data or changes an existing model.
- Check which account you are using. Consumer, work or school, commercial, and API accounts may have different settings, defaults, or terms. If an organization manages your account, ask its administrator about the applicable policy.
- Check exceptions and trade-offs. Feedback, safety review, retention, connected apps, or certain features may be handled separately.
The steps below cover the consumer-account controls documented for these four services as of October 3, 2026. Interfaces and policies can change, so confirm the live setting while signed in.
How to opt out in each service
ChatGPT
- Open Settings > Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI also describes submitting a request through its Privacy Portal by choosing “do not train on my content.” OpenAI says that after opting out, new conversations and tasks will not be used to train its models. This does not establish that past conversations are erased or that material already used in a trained model is reversed. Feedback may be treated separately; check OpenAI’s current guidance for the scope of feedback and any product-specific differences.

Claude
- Open Settings > Privacy in your consumer Claude account.
- Review the Model Improvement setting and switch it off if you do not want eligible chats used to improve Claude.
The label or exact path may vary by interface. Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. It also describes an exception: conversations flagged for safety review may be used or analyzed to improve detection and enforcement of its Usage Policy, including training models for its safeguards team. These consumer settings should not be assumed to apply to commercial offerings. See Anthropic’s Privacy Center guidance.
Microsoft Copilot for individuals
- Sign in to Copilot with your personal Microsoft Account.
- Open Copilot’s profile or privacy controls and locate Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off the training control.
Microsoft says opting out excludes future conversation activity from model training. Its privacy-controls support page provides app-specific navigation, including for the updated Copilot app available from August 18, 2026. This guidance is for Copilot for individuals using a personal Microsoft Account; it does not establish the settings for organizational accounts or other Microsoft AI products.

Gemini Apps
- In the mobile app, open your account or profile activity controls and turn off Keep Activity.
- On the web app, open Settings & help > Activity and turn off Keep Activity.
Google says future chats with Keep Activity off will not be used to train its AI models unless you choose to submit feedback. Chats may still be saved with your account for up to 72 hours so Google can provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. Some features or connected apps may become unavailable. For details, see Google’s Gemini Apps activity instructions and its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Keep Activity controls Gemini Apps activity; it does not control all other activity in your Google Account. Google also distinguishes prompts and uploads from summaries or excerpts derived from connected-app data. Do not assume those materials have identical privacy treatment.

What to check after opting out
- Confirm the setting is off in the account and product you actually use; a personal account control may not govern a work or school account.
- Review how the provider treats submitted feedback, safety reviews, and retained data. An opt-out for training does not automatically disable these other forms of processing.
- Consider whether turning off an activity setting will affect useful history, connected apps, or other features.
- Recheck after a product update. Labels and behavior can change, and settings should be verified before you share sensitive information.
This guide covers only the four providers above; it does not establish current controls for every AI assistant or account plan. For managed accounts, consult your administrator and the terms that apply to your service.
