This is a workflow comparison, not an independent security audit or usability study. OpenAI’s product documentation does not establish a universal safety winner or rank the interfaces for ease of use.
Which app is safer?
The official guidance does not support saying that desktop is safer than web, or vice versa. A practical security decision should account for what the session can access, what you share, and which prompts you approve. The desktop app’s built-in browser has its own state and website access controls; it does not simply inherit your everyday browser’s profile. In either interface, read prompts before granting access or confirming an action. A page’s instructions are not a reason to disclose private information or approve a sensitive action you did not intend.
Does the desktop app use your Chrome profile?
No. The desktop app’s built-in browser uses separate browser state; it does not automatically use your Chrome profile, cookies, open tabs, or extensions. That separation can be useful if you want the ChatGPT browser workflow kept distinct, but it also means a site may not recognize a login you already have in Chrome.

If your task depends on an existing Chrome session or extensions, use the Chrome workflow OpenAI documents rather than assuming the desktop app can access that profile. [OpenAI browser guidance]
What privacy controls can you change?
Privacy controls are tied to your account and, where applicable, workspace policy—not simply to desktop versus web. For signed-in web users, OpenAI says the “Improve the model for everyone” control is under Settings → Data Controls. Does “local” ChatGPT work stay on your computer?
Not necessarily. OpenAI describes local chats as running on your computer, but says messages and task context may be stored in the cloud. Cloud Work chats sync across supported surfaces. “Local” therefore describes where the work runs, not a guarantee that every related message or piece of context stays on the device. Choose desktop for app-specific browser and voice workflows
The desktop app combines Chat, Work, and Codex on macOS and Windows. Its built-in browser and annotation features suit tasks that benefit from a dedicated in-app workflow. Eligible accounts can use Voice in Work or Codex on desktop, though using microphone or computer context can trigger operating-system permission requests. Choose web when it fits your account workflow
The web app is a reasonable fit when you prefer the web surface or need a Work workflow documented for web. If a task requires an already signed-in Chrome website, use OpenAI’s documented Chrome option rather than expecting the desktop app’s separate browser to share the session. OpenAI’s reviewed Mac download guidance specifies macOS 14 and an Apple Silicon M1-or-better or Intel processor.
