To make sensitive WhatsApp conversations more private, first review account-wide visibility under Settings > Privacy, then set protections for each chat: use Chat Lock to restrict opening it on your device, Advanced Chat Privacy to limit certain in-app sharing, and disappearing messages to reduce ordinary chat history. These controls lower specific risks; they cannot stop someone from preserving content they can see.
What each WhatsApp privacy setting protects
Choose settings according to the exposure you want to reduce. Account Privacy settings affect your broader WhatsApp presence, while the other controls apply to particular conversations or device/account access.
| Control | Main exposure addressed | Scope and control | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account Privacy settings | Visibility of profile details and Status, read receipts, group additions, and unknown callers | Account-wide | Defaults may allow broad visibility, so review each setting. WhatsApp Help Center |
| Chat Lock | Someone opening a selected chat on your device or seeing identifying notification previews | Per chat | Calls from people in locked chats are not blocked. WhatsApp Help Center |
| Advanced Chat Privacy | Chat export, automatic media saving to the gallery, and Meta AI interactions in a chat | Per chat; either participant can enable it in an individual chat, while group admins control the group setting | People using older app versions may still be able to share material outside WhatsApp; participants can preserve content they can view. WhatsApp Help Center WhatsApp Help Center |
| Disappearing messages | Ordinary retention of messages in a chat | Per chat or as a default for new individual chats | Kept messages remain visible, and a backup made before expiry may include a message. WhatsApp Help Center |
| App and account safeguards | Unauthorized access to your device or account | Account and device | These safeguards complement, rather than replace, chat-level sharing and retention controls. WhatsApp Help Center |
1. Review account-wide privacy first
Open Settings > Privacy and check the audience for Last seen and online, Profile photo, About, and Status. Also review Read receipts, who can add you to groups, the default disappearing-message duration, and controls for unknown callers. WhatsApp describes these options in its Privacy settings guidance; do not assume the current defaults match your preference.
The Privacy page also points to controls such as protecting your IP address in calls, disabling link previews, and blocking high volumes of messages from unknown accounts. Consider these if they address a specific concern, and follow the current labels in your app because menus can vary by platform and version.

2. Lock individual conversations on your device
Chat Lock places a selected conversation behind an additional authentication layer. Notifications from a locked chat hide the contact’s identity and message details. It can be used with group and muted chats. Use it when the main concern is another person opening WhatsApp on your device, not as a way to prevent contact from reaching you.
Chat Lock does not block calls from people in the locked conversation. For feature details, see WhatsApp’s Chat Lock guidance. Update the app and use the current on-screen instructions for your platform.

3. Limit sharing inside a sensitive chat
Advanced Chat Privacy is a per-chat control for selected in-app sharing actions. In an individual conversation, either participant can enable it. In a group, group admins control the setting. Once enabled, it applies to all messages in that chat.
WhatsApp says, “All chats are private by default. Your personal messages are always protected with end-to-end encryption.” That statement concerns message privacy in transit; Advanced Chat Privacy adds limits on actions such as exporting a chat, automatically saving its media to a device gallery, and asking Meta AI to answer questions or generate content in that chat. See WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy guidance.

Neither this setting nor any other in-app control can prevent a recipient from copying, photographing, or otherwise recording content they can see.
4. Set a retention period with disappearing messages
WhatsApp offers disappearing-message durations of 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. You can enable a timer for a particular chat or set a default for new individual chats. The timer affects new messages sent after activation; it does not remove earlier messages.

A disappearing timer is not guaranteed erasure. Messages that participants keep remain visible rather than disappearing at expiry, and a backup created before a message disappears may contain it. Treat the setting as a way to limit ordinary chat history. WhatsApp explains the behavior in its disappearing messages guidance.

If your concern includes someone accessing your phone or account, add the relevant account and device safeguards. WhatsApp lists app lock, Chat Lock, end-to-end encrypted backups, and strict account settings among its security measures. Its guidance frames strict account settings for people who believe they may be targeted by attacks. Details are in WhatsApp’s account security guidance.

6. Respond to unwanted contact
Privacy settings reduce exposure but do not take back content already shared. WhatsApp notes that recipients have a copy of material sent to them. If someone is contacting you unwantedly, consider blocking or reporting the account, limiting what it can see, silencing unknown callers, or blocking high volumes of messages from unknown senders. See WhatsApp’s guidance on unwanted contact and privacy.
Platform and version differences
WhatsApp’s help instructions cover Android, iOS, Web, Mac, and Windows depending on the feature. The exact menus and labels can differ across platforms and app versions. Update WhatsApp and follow the instructions shown in your current app; for Advanced Chat Privacy in particular, older versions may still allow some sharing behavior.
