Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch are the main options described in Samsung’s support guidance, but the categories and features available can differ by model, software version, carrier, and country.
Back up with Samsung Cloud
On supported Galaxy phones, Samsung’s Canada support guide, updated September 11, 2026, gives this route: Samsung Cloud backup and restore instructions. Menu labels may differ on your phone.
- Open Settings and tap Accounts and backup.
- Under Samsung Cloud, tap Back up data.
- Review the categories shown on your phone and select what you want included.
- Tap Back up now. Keep the phone connected until the screen reports that the backup is complete.
Samsung recommends Wi-Fi for cloud backups because mobile-data charges may apply. Automatic Samsung Cloud backups have additional conditions: Samsung says the device must be charging, its screen must be off, and it must be connected to Wi-Fi. For an update you are about to install, start Back up now yourself rather than relying on an older automatic backup.
Check what the cloud backup covers
Samsung Cloud is not necessarily a complete copy of everything on the phone. Samsung says available data and categories can vary by country, carrier, model, and OS or phone version. Use the selection screen on your own device to see what is offered and selected; Samsung’s UK guide to Samsung Cloud backup contents also describes supported data categories, but those details should not be assumed to apply universally.

An older Samsung Singapore guide says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up through Samsung Cloud and that contacts and calendars set up with a Google account are not synchronized to Samsung Cloud. Treat these as service- and region-specific caveats, not universal current limits; check your phone’s current options and any relevant app or account sync settings.
Back up with Smart Switch
Smart Switch offers local backup options as well as data transfer. What it can save or restore depends on the device, software version, and data type, so a completed Smart Switch backup does not guarantee that every app’s private data or setting can be restored. Save a copy to a computer
- Install or open Samsung Smart Switch on your computer.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a USB cable.
- Follow the Smart Switch prompts to create a backup, and wait for the program to confirm it has finished.
Keep the cable connected while a transfer is active. Samsung warns, “Do not disconnect the USB cable from the device when you are transferring files.” Some call log, email setting, and internet setting transfers may not be supported in particular operating-system combinations, according to Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance.
Save a copy to an SD card or USB storage
Samsung also documents Smart Switch backups to an SD card or USB storage. Availability depends on the phone and app; check the options Smart Switch displays for your device before buying storage. Do not assume that every USB-C drive is compatible with every Galaxy model. Samsung’s Australia guide describes these local storage choices.

Choose a backup destination

A cloud copy is useful if you want a destination beyond the phone; a computer or removable-storage copy is local. If the data is especially important, you can make both, but Samsung does not require duplicate backups. Choose based on the methods you can use and the categories each one actually offers.

- Run a fresh backup shortly before starting the One UI update.
- Look for a completion message or timestamp in Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch; do not treat a backup that is still running as finished.
- Review the categories selected and confirm that the items you care about are included.
- If using a cable, follow the on-screen prompts and leave it connected during an active transfer.
- For app data or files not covered by the selected backup, use the app’s own export or sync options where available.
The precise menus and supported categories depend on your Galaxy model and software. If a listed option is missing, use the backup controls shown on the phone and consult Samsung’s support instructions for your region.
