To choose a horror game for a low-end PC, compare your computer’s operating system, processor, graphics card, RAM and free storage with the game’s current official system requirements. Treat the minimum specs as a first screening step, not a guarantee of smooth play: the listings for the games below do not promise a particular frame rate on your computer.
Check your PC before choosing a game
Find your PC’s exact model or identify its components, then compare them with each game’s official store listing. On Windows, you can find basic hardware details under Settings > System > About; for graphics details, check Settings > System > Display > Advanced display or the graphics adapter information in Device Manager. Menu names can vary by Windows version.
Check these items against the game’s requirements:
- Operating system: Confirm your Windows version and whether the listing specifies 64-bit Windows. Requirements for macOS or Linux are separate; do not use them as substitutes for Windows requirements.
- CPU: Compare your processor model with the listed minimum. A broad label such as “Core i3” is less precise than a specific processor model, so check carefully when the listing gives both.
- Graphics: Match the graphics adapter to the stated model or class, including VRAM when specified. Integrated graphics are not automatically equivalent to a named dedicated GPU.
- RAM: Check installed system memory against the minimum.
- Other requirements: Note DirectX or other platform requirements and make sure you have enough free storage.
- Performance target: If the publisher specifies a resolution or frame rate for its minimum requirements, compare that with what you consider playable. The examples below do not establish a comparable target.
A PC that falls below any listed minimum, or a listing that does not clearly identify your hardware class, makes compatibility uncertain. Look for current reports for the exact PC configuration and game rather than assuming it will work. No individual-PC benchmark is available for the examples in this guide.

Compare the published requirements—not the horror genre
Horror games do not share a common hardware baseline. These Windows minimums, published on Steam by the games’ publishers, show how much requirements can differ. Check the current store page before deciding, because listings may change.
| Game | Windows minimum CPU | Windows minimum graphics | RAM | Other listed minimums |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Darkwood (2017) | Intel Core i3-2100 dual-core or AMD Phenom II X2 565 dual-core | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (1 GB) or AMD Radeon HD 5770 (1 GB) | 4 GB | Windows 10 64-bit; 10 GB storage. The Steam listing has separate macOS 12+ and SteamOS/Linux requirements; check the section for your operating system. Steam listing |
| Eyes: The Horror Game (2024) | Intel Core i3 or AMD equivalent | GeForce GTX 660 | 4 GB | Windows 10 or later; DirectX 11; 900 MB available storage. Steam listing |
| Outer Terror (2023) | Intel Core i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 6-Core or above | GTX 1050 or RX 560 | 4 GB | Windows 10/11; DirectX 11; 1 GB storage. Steam listing |
Outer Terror’s recommended requirements are substantially higher than its listed minimums: Windows 11 64-bit, Ryzen 7 series or above, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2070, RX 6600 or Arc A750 graphics, DirectX 12 and 1 GB storage. This is another reason not to read a minimum-spec match as a promise of smooth performance.

Use a simple decision process
- Write down your exact PC details. Record your OS version, CPU, graphics adapter, RAM and available storage.
- Open the game’s current official store page. Use the requirements for your operating system, not a row for another platform or edition.
- Compare every listed minimum. Do not decide based only on RAM or storage; the CPU and GPU can be the limiting components.
- Check for a stated performance target. If the listing gives none, treat the expected resolution and frame rate as unknown.
- Decide how much uncertainty you accept. If you are below a minimum or cannot identify an equivalent component, seek reports for your exact hardware and the current game version before buying.
What system requirements can—and cannot—tell you
Minimum requirements are a useful screening checklist, not a standardized performance guarantee. The cited listings give hardware and platform specifications but do not promise a target frame rate for an individual PC. A game meeting its minimum may still not meet your preferred performance level, and these examples do not establish how well the games run on specific low-end laptops or desktops.
When comparing candidates, note whether your PC meets each minimum, whether the publisher provides a resolution or frame-rate target, and whether useful graphics reductions are documented. If a listing does not state a target or comparable settings, mark that information as unknown rather than inferring it from the GPU name.

Do not use Steam Deck compatibility as a PC performance test
Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility review describes testing for the Steam Deck, a specific portable device. Its compatibility label is not a general performance guarantee for a Windows laptop or desktop with different hardware. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility documentation explains the scope of that review.
