Before buying a smart device for Samsung SmartThings, check the exact model in the SmartThings app’s regional Menu → Supported devices directory, then confirm how it connects and whether your setup has the required hub or controller. Protocol compatibility alone does not guarantee that SmartThings will expose every feature you expect.
What “compatible with SmartThings” needs to mean
A device is a practical fit only when every link in the setup works: the exact model is supported in your region, its connection route is available, your hub or controller has the right capabilities, pairing can be completed, and the integration offers the controls you need. SmartThings notes that capabilities vary by manufacturer and device, so support for a device type or protocol is not a promise of identical features across models. SmartThings’ supported-device guidance is the starting point for checking models.
Check the exact model and region first
- Open the SmartThings app and go to Menu → Supported devices.
- Search by brand or device type, and verify the exact model rather than relying on a product-family name or a retailer’s general “works with SmartThings” claim.
- Confirm the listing applies to your region. Device availability and supported models can differ, and SmartThings’ in-app directory is the recommended model-level check.
- Identify the specific functions you expect to use—such as switching, dimming, sensing, or control in an automation—and verify that the listing and manufacturer information support them.
SmartThings’ general supported-device guidance dates from 2021, so use the current in-app listing for the actual buying decision rather than assuming an older general article is a complete catalog.
Find out how the device connects—and whether you need a hub
SmartThings supports several integration paths. Some devices connect directly or through cloud integrations; Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub under its support guidance. Matter devices also need a compatible controller. The label or protocol name is only one part of the check: verify the exact model and route in the app. SmartThings’ developer documentation separates hub-connected protocols from direct-connected and cloud-connected integrations. Hub-connected devices and cloud-connected devices use distinct integration paths.

| Connection path | What to check before purchase |
|---|---|
| Zigbee or Z-Wave | Confirm you have a SmartThings-enabled hub with support for the relevant protocol. For Z-Wave, the device may need to be excluded or reset before it can be added again. SmartThings’ hub guidance identifies supported hub-connected protocols; its Z-Wave setup instructions cover exclusion and re-adding. |
| LAN-connected | SmartThings says these devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub. Check the exact model and integration in the regional Supported devices list. |
| Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Confirm a compatible Matter controller is available and check the device’s network requirements. The SmartThings app guides commissioning. |
| Matter over Thread | Confirm the controller has Thread Border Router capability. Do not assume every Matter-capable hub has a built-in Thread router. |
| Direct or cloud integration | Verify the exact model and required integration. SmartThings’ developer documentation describes direct-connected and cloud-connected routes separately; protocol support does not by itself establish that a device can pair locally. |
For Matter, verify the controller and the network
A Matter logo does not remove controller requirements. SmartThings says Matter devices need a compatible hub/controller, and Matter over Thread additionally needs a controller with Thread Border Router capability. Its Matter support guide names specific hub examples and qualifications, but those examples come from a dated support article and are not a complete or necessarily current buying list. Check the current firmware, regional app support, and Thread capability of the specific controller you plan to use.
SmartThings identifies a Matter badge on packaging and says a device includes a QR pairing code, with a setup code as an alternative. Some older products may gain Matter support through firmware updates, but that depends on the device. Check the manufacturer’s current model-specific information instead of treating an update as guaranteed.

- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
Pairing conditions that can stop setup
- The controller must be available to the SmartThings app, and the device must be in pairing mode.
- Have the Matter QR code or setup code ready; follow the device maker’s pairing instructions.
- Keep the device within range during commissioning and ensure it has adequate power.
- For Thread, select the appropriate Thread network if prompted and confirm the controller’s border-router capability.
- For Wi-Fi, check the device’s supported network frequency and security settings against your home network.
SmartThings’ Matter onboarding flow includes choosing a supported controller, scanning the QR code or entering the setup code, selecting a hub and room, and choosing a Wi-Fi or Thread network when prompted. Its troubleshooting guidance flags controller availability, pairing mode, range, signal, network compatibility, and power as possible setup factors. See SmartThings Matter setup guidance.
Plan for reset, ownership, and re-pairing
A device that was previously paired elsewhere may not be ready to join your SmartThings setup immediately. Follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure; Z-Wave devices can require exclusion before re-adding, including physical confirmation on the device. If setup fails, check the device’s current pairing state and repeat the maker’s instructions before concluding that the model is incompatible. SmartThings’ Z-Wave instructions describe the exclusion step.

How to choose a device category without overclaiming
Matter smart plugs are a sensible category to consider if you want straightforward on/off control: SmartThings lists on/off and dimmable plug-in units among supported Matter device types. That is category-level support, not a blanket guarantee for every listing or model. Check the precise plug in your region, confirm your controller, and match its connection method to your network and hardware. SmartThings’ Matter partner information describes supported Matter device types and the controller requirement.
If your existing setup lacks the necessary protocol or controller, a SmartThings-enabled hub or Matter controller may be the missing component. Choose one by matching its supported protocol to the device; for Thread products, specifically confirm Thread Border Router capability. Verify the current model’s specifications and app support before purchase.
