It depends on what the game’s servers do. A shutdown may remove only online features, leave offline play intact, or make the entire game inaccessible—including for people who bought it. Check the specific game’s shutdown notice for which features stop and whether the publisher plans an offline patch or replacement service.
What a server shutdown can mean for a purchased game
Buying a game does not guarantee that every online service needed to run it will remain available indefinitely. The key question is whether publisher servers support optional features or are required to authenticate, start, save, or run the game’s core gameplay. The European Commission has identified server dependency as a reason games may become partly or entirely unusable after service ends.

| What the servers support | Possible result after shutdown |
|---|---|
| Multiplayer, leaderboards, player statistics, in-game news, or other online features | Those features may stop while offline or local play remains available. |
| Authentication, startup, saving, or the core gameplay loop | Some or all of the game may stop working; in some cases it may be inaccessible altogether. |
| Specific online-linked content, such as DLC activation | That content may become unavailable unless the publisher provides a way to activate or preserve it before a deadline. |
These are possible outcomes, not guarantees. A physical disc, a new console, or extra storage does not by itself make server-dependent software work after the service ends.
Examples: features lost, content preserved, and a game made inaccessible
Some games keep their offline features
Ubisoft’s notice about older games says online multiplayer, in-game news, and player statistics were shut down for most of the titles on its list, while offline features were unaffected. That shows why a shutdown notice should be read feature by feature rather than treated as proof that the whole game is gone.

Some content may need action before a deadline
In a notice updated on 31 August 2022, Ubisoft said owners of certain PC games could activate single-player DLC before a new shutdown date so they could continue playing it. The notice also said the company was preparing an update to replace the old online services for Anno 2070. A preservation step or replacement is title-specific; do not assume one will be offered for another game.
The Crew became inaccessible
On 14 December 2023, Ubisoft announced that The Crew would be delisted and remain playable only until 31 March 2024. Ubisoft said the subsequent shutdown would make the game inaccessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, and Ubisoft+. It cited server infrastructure and licensing constraints. This is an example of a shutdown affecting the entire game, not a rule for every publisher or title.
How to check what will happen to your game
- Find the official shutdown announcement. Look at the publisher’s support site, game news page, and platform notices. Confirm the shutdown date and the platforms or editions covered.
- Identify which systems depend on servers. Look for explicit statements about authentication, launching, saving, single-player access, multiplayer, DLC, and account-linked features. If the notice does not say whether offline play survives, do not assume it does.
- Check for preservation instructions. The publisher may announce an offline update, replacement service, downloadable backup, or a deadline to activate content. Follow any stated steps before the deadline.
- Verify your own purchase and platform details. Record where and when you bought the game, your country, the edition, and the platform. Refund rules and consumer remedies can differ with those details.
Can you get a refund or other remedy?
There is no universal promise of a refund simply because a publisher closes servers. In its The Crew announcement, Ubisoft directed recent purchasers to the refund policy of the store where they bought the game. Ubisoft’s digital PC game refund page describes a 14-day request window and a two-hour playtime limit, and says purchases through approved third-party retailers are governed by those retailers’ policies. Those are Ubisoft Store terms, not a general rule for other stores, platforms, or countries.

For EU consumers, a written European Commission answer dated 5 June 2024 said consumer-protection rules require transparency about material aspects of an offer, address unfair commercial practices and contract terms, and provide remedies when digital content or services lack conformity. It also said EU legislation does not set a specific duration for supplying products, including online video games. National courts and administrative authorities resolve individual disputes, so that Commission summary does not determine the outcome of a particular claim or cover every country’s law.
If you think you may have a claim, keep the purchase receipt and shutdown notice, check the current terms of the actual store, and consult the consumer-protection authority or qualified adviser relevant to your country. A publisher shutdown is not automatically proof that a refund is owed—or that no remedy is available.
