For most Galaxy buyers, 256GB is a comfortable default. Choose 128GB if you mainly stream media and routinely back up or clear large files; consider 512GB or more if you record lots of high-resolution video, keep large games or downloads, or want a substantial library on the phone for years. These are usage-based recommendations, not a universal minimum: check the exact model and market before buying, especially if you expect to add a microSD card.

What Galaxy phone storage has to hold

Advertised storage is a finite pool shared by apps, photos, videos, downloads, and other files. The number on the box does not tell you exactly how much room will be available for your personal files, and individual file sizes vary with the phone and capture settings.

Samsung UK gives these approximate examples for a 128GB phone: around 900 photos, 60 minutes of UHD video, 1,000 songs, 100 or more apps and games, or 20 movies. They are illustrations, not guaranteed capacities for every Galaxy. Samsung cautions that “the exact photo, video and app size will always vary.” Samsung UK’s storage guide is specific to its UK market information.

How much storage to choose by usage

128GB: lighter use and regular cleanup

128GB can suit someone with a modest app collection who streams rather than downloads media and regularly backs up or removes large photos and videos. It leaves less headroom as files accumulate over several years, so it is a better fit if you are comfortable managing storage.

256GB: a balanced default

256GB is a sensible middle ground for regular photos and video, a range of apps, and fewer storage-management chores. This is a practical recommendation based on Samsung’s published capacity examples and the configurations it lists, not a Samsung rule or a guarantee that every model is sold with this tier.

512GB or more: keep more on the phone

Look at 512GB or higher if you often record 4K or 8K video, install large games, keep downloaded shows or maps, store work files, or want a large on-device library without frequent transfers. The larger tier is most valuable when you will actually keep that data on the phone.

Estimate your own storage needs

  1. Check current use: Open the storage view in your current phone’s Settings and note how much space is used. Decide which of those files you will transfer and keep, rather than assuming all current use will carry over.
  2. Add expected growth: Consider the photos, recordings, apps, games, and offline media you expect to add over the new phone’s useful life.
  3. Reserve space: Samsung’s guide advises budgeting approximately 10GB for additional files and software updates, then adding a 20% buffer to the usage estimate. These are planning allowances from Samsung’s guide, not a promise about every model’s system use.
  4. Compare with the tier: Choose a capacity that leaves room for your expected use and reserve. If that estimate is close to the advertised capacity, step up rather than treating the full advertised figure as free space.

Video can change the calculation quickly

Samsung UK’s guide estimates roughly 100MB per minute for Full HD recording, 300MB per minute for 4K, and 600MB per minute for 8K. At those estimated rates, an hour of footage is about 6GB, 18GB, or 36GB respectively. Actual file sizes depend on the device and recording settings, so use these as planning estimates rather than fixed rates.

A separate Samsung Semiconductor brochure illustrates why rates should not be generalized: for a Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G test configuration, it lists 7.93GB for 30 minutes of 4K video at 30fps, while other tested configurations are near 10GB per 30 minutes. That is a historical, device-specific example, not an exact prediction for a current Galaxy. Samsung Semiconductor’s 2024 microSD brochure provides the test context.

Can a microSD card replace a larger internal tier?

Only some Galaxy models have a microSD slot. Samsung US says Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, and many apps cannot be moved to a card; preloaded apps cannot be moved. A card can therefore help with supported files and media, but it is not equivalent to internal storage for apps. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of its capacity and read/write capability. Check the precise model’s support and capacity limits before purchasing a card. Samsung’s microSD support guidance explains these limitations.

Support varies even among phones in the same family. Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy A-series business guide lists microSD support for the Galaxy A17 5G, while other models have their own stated configurations. Do not assume one A-series model’s card support applies to another; verify the exact model number and region. Samsung’s Galaxy A-series guide is a model-specific example.

  • EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
  • SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
  • MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Cloud backup or an external drive can preserve or offload files, but neither changes the phone’s internal capacity. They also require a separate service or hardware and a workflow that suits you.

Compare storage tiers by more than the number

  • Price difference: Compare the actual price premium for the larger capacity, including any upgrade promotion available when you buy.
  • How long you will keep the phone: More years usually mean more accumulated photos, apps, updates, and downloads.
  • Recording and download habits: Frequent high-resolution video, games, offline shows, music, and maps all use on-device space.
  • Management preference: Decide whether regular backup, deletion, or file transfers are acceptable to you.
  • Verified expansion: Confirm microSD support on the exact model and remember that a card may not hold apps or work as internal storage.

Configurations also vary by market. Samsung UK’s guide lists the Galaxy S26+ in 256GB or 512GB and the S26 Ultra up to 1TB; check the local model and retailer listing rather than assuming those options apply everywhere.
