For a first match, learn what your hero does, farm safely in your assigned lane or jungle, check the minimap often, and join your team around useful fights and objectives.
What you need to know about heroes and roles
In Honor of Kings, playable characters are called heroes. Each has distinct skills, so start by reading your chosen hero’s ability information in the game rather than assuming every hero in the same class plays alike. The official overview groups play styles into Warrior, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, and Support. A beginner guide also describes Tanks as a class; in practice, class labels and team jobs can overlap, and a hero’s lane assignment is not always the same thing as its class.
- Warriors and fighters: Usually take direct fights and can suit the Clash Lane.
- Assassins: Mobile burst attackers who look for openings, often from the jungle.
- Mages: Often deal ranged area damage or provide control; many can clear Mid Lane and rotate to help elsewhere.
- Marksmen: Ranged damage dealers who benefit from continued farming and often use the Farm Lane.
- Supports and Tanks: Help protect or strengthen teammates; tanks are generally built to absorb damage. They may roam between lanes rather than staying in one place.
These are broad role descriptions, not a current ranking of heroes or a guarantee that every match follows the same setup. The official Honor of Kings overview lists five lane or role labels: Clash Lane, Jungler, Mid Lane, Farm Lane, and Roamer.
How the lanes and jungle fit together
The map has three main lane roads—Mid, Clash, and Farm—and a jungle area between them. The Jungler is a team role played in that jungle area, not a fourth lane. Roamers, often supports or tanks, move around the map to help teammates rather than committing to one lane throughout the match.

| Area or role | Common fit | Farming emphasis | Movement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid Lane | Mages that can clear waves and assist in fights | Clear lane minions, then look for safe opportunities to help elsewhere | May rotate to other lanes after clearing |
| Clash Lane | Fighters or tanks | Hold the lane and collect its minion resources | Often lane-focused, with movement depending on the match |
| Farm Lane | Marksmen | Minions in this lane provide more gold, supporting the marksman’s farming | Usually focus on farming and lane safety before joining wider fights |
| Jungle | Jungler, commonly an assassin | Defeat jungle monsters for resources; exact rewards vary | Moves between jungle camps and lanes to support the team |
| Roamer | Often a support or tank | Not defined by one lane’s minion farming | Moves across the map to assist teammates |
These are useful defaults, not immutable rules for every hero or patch. Epic Games Store’s beginner guide, dated September 4, 2025, recommends Mid or Farm as approachable starting points for an uncertain beginner, but your comfort with a hero matters more than treating either lane as mandatory.
How towers, monsters, and the crystal connect
Your team’s ultimate objective is the enemy crystal. Towers protect the lanes; defeating them opens a safer route toward the enemy base. The practical progression is to clear minion waves and create lane pressure, take towers when your team has an opening, use river and jungle resources to support your team, and push toward the crystal when the route is clear.

- Minions and lanes: Minions provide resources and help create pressure against enemy towers. Do not walk into a defended tower simply because your wave is nearby.
- Towers: They guard routes toward the base. Destroying them advances your team’s push, but coordinate with teammates rather than attacking alone.
- River and jungle monsters: These are map resources, not scenery. The official overview describes jungle monsters as useful resources, while Epic’s guide says defeating river and jungle monsters can grant buffs. Rewards and spawn timing can change, so do not rely on a fixed timer without checking current in-game information.
- Enemy crystal: Reaching and destroying it wins the match. Chasing kills without converting an advantage into a tower or a crystal push does not complete the objective.
The river runs through the map’s middle, and its bushes can hide enemies. Check the minimap before crossing exposed areas or moving to help another lane.

- Choose one hero and learn its kit. Read the skill descriptions in the game and learn what each ability does before trying to master several heroes.
- Follow your assigned role. Stay in your lane or perform your jungle route so you collect resources and do not leave another part of the map undefended.
- Check the minimap frequently. Look for missing opponents, teammates who may need help, and activity around the river or lanes before moving.
- Value survival as well as damage. If you are low on health or outnumbered, back away and recover rather than forcing a fight. A death can cost time and leave your team short-handed.
- Spend available equipment upgrades. Use the in-game shop and upgrade options as they become available; equipment helps tailor your hero to the match.
- Communicate simply. Use the team’s available communication tools to signal danger, a planned move, or a need for help.
- Build fundamentals before advanced tactics. Focus on farming, safe positioning, map awareness, and helping with objectives before adding more complicated strategies.
A September 4, 2025 Epic Games Store guide stated that the game had more than 100 heroes and that a typical 5v5 match lasted around 15–20 minutes. Those are figures from that dated guide, not a verified live roster count or a guaranteed match duration. No current authoritative hero tier list or patch-specific objective timers are established here, so use the in-game information for current details.
