Will your game still work when its servers shut down? It depends on the game, platform, edition, account, and which features rely on those servers. A shutdown might remove only multiplayer, preserve a campaign or local co-op, or make the entire game inaccessible. To find out, check the exact game’s official notice, identify its online dependencies, and test the version you own while its services are still running.
Check the official shutdown notice first
Search the publisher’s or platform’s support site for the exact game title and phrases such as “server shutdown,” “online services,” or “service update.” Confirm that the notice matches your platform, edition, and region; similarly named versions may have different service plans. Read the update date and check again near the announced shutdown, because plans can change. For example, 2K’s online-services status page says retirement dates may be extended or brought forward.
A useful notice should identify the affected game and platforms, the shutdown date, which features will stop working, what remains available offline, and any steps for transferring saves or content. If those details are missing, contact the publisher’s support team rather than assuming every mode will be affected in the same way.
Map which parts of the game depend on servers
“Offline mode” alone does not answer whether a game will work. Check each feature separately: a game may run its campaign locally yet still require a server to authenticate at launch, validate a license periodically, load a save, or run core gameplay.

- Launch and authentication: Does the game, launcher, or linked account need to sign in? Is there a periodic check-in or license validation?
- Campaign and progression: Can you start and continue solo play without a connection, and is progress saved locally?
- Multiplayer and local play: Does the shutdown affect online matchmaking only, or also local co-op and other modes?
- Content and services: Are DLC, virtual currency, inventory, leaderboards, social features, or user-created content stored or delivered by a server?
- Transition options: Is there a patch, offline successor, save-transfer tool, or deadline to use before service ends?
These dependencies matter even if the game has an offline mode. An Electronic Frontier Foundation filing hosted by the U.S. Copyright Office describes how authentication-server failure can make games unplayable, including games designed with offline modes.
Test the version you own while service is available
A controlled offline test can show what your current installation does, but it cannot guarantee that the game will keep working indefinitely. Periodic authentication, a later update, or a change to an online service may alter the result.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- Install the current update and record the platform, edition, software version, and account state.
- Follow the publisher’s instructions for enabling offline play, if any. Complete any required sign-in or setup while the service is still available.
- Close the game, disconnect the network, and try launching it again. This can reveal a sign-in or authentication requirement that an already-open session would not show.
- Load a local save and try each mode you care about, including campaign progression and local multiplayer where applicable.
- Write down the exact result and any error messages. Treat success as evidence about that version and setup—not proof of permanent future access.
Do not assume a disc copy or downloaded installer removes server dependencies. Either can still require authentication or rely on servers for gameplay.
Check what happens to saves, purchases, and creations
Ask whether saves are local, cloud-only, or transferable; whether purchased DLC is already installed; and whether inventory, virtual currency, or user-created content will remain accessible. A save backup can protect local files, but it cannot restore a server-hosted feature, online inventory, or a service needed for authentication.

Some publishers plan a transition rather than simply switching a service off. Bandai Namco announced on September 28, 2026, that SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada’s online service is planned to end after May 2027, with a standalone offline version in development. The company says some save data and designated purchased items are expected to transfer; the transfer details were still pending, and local-save transfer was scheduled for December 2026. These are announced plans, not completed behavior, so consult the official development and operations update for changes.
Back up local saves using the platform’s supported method where available, and keep a copy of the shutdown notice and any transfer instructions. Do this before any deadline in the notice.

What shutdown examples reveal
Official notices show why the outcome must be checked title by title: publishers can retain some modes, remove others, or make a game inaccessible.
| Official example | What the notice says | What to check for your game |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Games’ December 14, 2022 notice | Most affected titles would remain playable offline, while some would not. The notice named retained single-player or local multiplayer modes for specified games and said Battle Breakers would become inaccessible. | Look for named modes and titles, not just a general statement that servers are closing. Read Epic’s notice. |
| PlayStation service notices | The campaigns in inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood remain playable after user-generated-content servers close, but those missions disappear. GUNS UP! requires online access and becomes unplayable after service termination. Gran Turismo Sport loses online services and features, while offline portions and purchased add-ons remain playable. | Check the fate of each mode, user creations, and add-ons separately. See PlayStation’s game-server information. |
| 2K retirement schedule | As of its September 14, 2026 update, the status page listed NBA 2K27 online services as scheduled through December 31, 2028, and listed several offline modes, including Play Now, MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM, 2KU/Learn 2K, MyWNBA, and The W. 2K says dates can change. | Check the live schedule for the specific title and revisit it before relying on a retirement date. View 2K’s status page. |
| EA service updates | EA says some titles may remain playable offline after services end, but whether virtual currency or inventory remains usable depends on the game and the retired service. | Verify offline play and in-game items separately in the title’s notice. Read EA’s service updates. |
EA also says older games’ online services may no longer be feasible to maintain when player numbers have typically fallen below 1% of peak online players across its titles. That is EA’s stated rationale, not an independently measured industry-wide shutdown rate.

- Match the notice to your exact platform, edition, and region.
- Identify launch authentication, periodic checks, saves, and core gameplay dependencies—not just multiplayer.
- Record which campaigns, local modes, DLC, online items, and user creations will remain available.
- Test a fresh offline launch and the modes you care about on your current version.
- Back up local saves and complete any transfer or migration steps before the stated deadline.
