Run a portable generator outdoors at least 20 feet from your home and from doors, windows, and vents, with its exhaust pointed away from buildings. Never run it indoors or in an enclosed space—even with doors or windows open. Use a battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarm inside, and follow the generator’s manual for operation, weather, fuel, and maintenance.
Before the outage: plan the setup
- Read the owner’s manual and safety labels. Check the generator’s rated output and identify which appliances you intend to power.
- Choose an outdoor location at least 20 feet from the home and away from doors, windows, and vents. Plan to aim the exhaust away from people and buildings.
- Install and test battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in the home according to their instructions.
- Get intact, grounded extension cords rated for the intended load. If you want to power household circuits through building wiring, arrange installation of a transfer switch by a qualified electrician before an outage.
During an outage: operate it outdoors
- Place the generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the home and openings. Keep it away from other buildings and occupied areas, and direct the exhaust away from them. Reconsider the location if wind or nearby structures could carry exhaust toward people or an opening.
- Keep the generator dry and follow its manufacturer’s weather instructions. Do not assume a generic cover is safe; use only weather protection the manufacturer permits, or wait until rain or snow passes if the manual requires it.
- Connect appliances with intact, grounded cords rated for the intended wattage or amperage. Do not overload the generator; follow the manual’s startup, shutdown, and load instructions.
- Shut off the engine before refueling. Store fuel outdoors, away from living areas, and follow the manual’s directions for fuel type and storage.
Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so you cannot rely on smell to detect it. A generator must never run in a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed area, even if a door or window is open. Distance and exhaust direction matter outdoors, too: keep the unit at least 20 feet from the home and openings, and aim its exhaust away from buildings.
A CO alarm inside the home is an added safeguard, not permission to place the generator closer or run it indoors. An automatic CO shutoff feature on a generator also supplements—not replaces—safe placement and an indoor alarm. The CDC’s August 26, 2026 outage guidance covers generator safety: CDC guidance on generators and carbon monoxide.
Recognize possible exposure and act
The CDC lists headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion among possible CO-poisoning symptoms. If poisoning is suspected, get everyone to fresh air and call 911 or Poison Control in the United States at 1-800-222-1222, or seek medical care. Do not wait for an alarm or for symptoms to worsen. See the CDC’s CO signs and symptoms.

Connect appliances safely—never improvise a building connection
You can connect appliances directly to the generator using manufacturer-supplied cords or suitable grounded extension cords that are intact and rated for the load. Do not connect a generator directly to a home’s electrical wiring without a properly installed transfer switch. An improper connection can send electricity back through wiring and endanger utility workers and others. A qualified electrician should install the transfer switch; do not improvise a panel connection. OSHA explains the hazards of portable generator use.
Account for weather and generator features
Wet conditions can create an electrical-shock hazard. Follow the specific model’s weather instructions: they may allow an appropriate noncombustible generator tent or require you to wait until rain or snow has passed. A cover that seems convenient is not necessarily safe or approved. The CPSC’s portable generator safety alert advises following the manufacturer’s instructions and suggests considering models with automatic CO shutoff. That feature does not make indoor or closer-than-recommended operation safe.

What safety figures do—and do not—tell you
In a 2026 public-service announcement, the CDC said carbon monoxide from generators, grills, and other fuel-burning devices kills more than 500 Americans each year. The announcement does not identify a specific underlying data year, so this is an annual figure cited by the CDC, not a count newly measured in 2026. See the CDC’s 2026 public-service announcement.
If you are choosing a generator, check that its output can meet the loads you plan to run, review whether it has an automatic CO shutoff, and confirm that you can place it outdoors at the required distance. No feature or accessory makes indoor operation safe, and a model’s suitability depends on its own specifications and instructions.
