Use a surge protective device to limit voltage spikes, and a UPS when a computer or network device needs battery time to save work or shut down. A surge protector alone will not keep equipment running during an outage. Keep backups, disconnect sensitive electronics during an outage when it is safe and practical, and reconnect them carefully after power returns.

Outages, sags, and surges are different problems

An outage is a loss of power. A voltage sag is a brief drop that can make equipment malfunction or shut down. A surge is a brief rise in voltage that can damage connected electronics. Sags may make lights dim, clocks blink, or computers shut down and reboot, potentially losing data, as described in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Surges Happen! How to Protect the Appliances in Your Home. Surges can be associated with lightning, utility switching, or large electrical loads switching on or off, according to HP’s consumer guidance.

The right protection depends on which problem you are trying to address: surge protection limits transient overvoltage, while a UPS provides temporary battery power. Neither guarantees protection against every electrical event.

What to do before, during, and after an outage

Before an outage or storm

  1. Identify what matters most. List equipment that needs protection or a controlled shutdown, such as a desktop computer, monitor, router or modem, storage devices, and home-office equipment.
  2. Back up important data regularly. A UPS can give you time to save work or shut equipment down, but it is not a substitute for backups.
  3. Choose protection for the job. Use a product explicitly labeled as a surge protector or surge protective device (SPD) for surge protection. For equipment that should remain on briefly, consider a UPS sized for its connected load and the runtime you need. Runtime varies with the model and load.
  4. Prepare small mobile devices. Charge phones ahead of an expected outage and consider a compatible portable power bank. It can keep a phone charged; it is not surge protection for plugged-in equipment.
  5. Consider panel-level protection if appropriate. A whole-home SPD can add a layer at the electrical panel. Ask a qualified professional to evaluate and install it, taking local code and panel compatibility into account.

During an outage

  • When it is safe and practical, turn off or unplug sensitive electronics. PG&E and Southern California Edison (SCE) advise disconnecting equipment; PG&E warns that restoration may bring momentary voltage spikes.
  • Leave one light on if you want a visible signal that power has returned, as SCE recommends.
  • If someone depends on electrically powered medical equipment, make an outage plan with the device provider or clinician. An ordinary consumer UPS recommendation is not a medical-device plan; see Indiana Department of Homeland Security guidance.
  • Do not handle plugs or cords where water or another electrical hazard is present. Stay away from downed power lines and follow utility and emergency instructions.

When power returns

  1. Keep sensitive electronics disconnected until you are ready to reconnect them. Follow any local utility advice about restoration, and do not switch on many high-load devices at once if the utility advises against it.
  2. Reconnect equipment selectively. Check surge-protector indicators and inspect cords and devices for cracks, melted or discolored plastic, burn marks, unusual heat, or buzzing.
  3. Stop using any device that fails or shows signs of heat damage. Do not repeatedly reconnect it; seek qualified repair or electrical advice.
  4. Replace a protector if its indicator shows protection has failed, if it is damaged, or when its manufacturer’s service-life guidance calls for replacement. There is no universal replacement schedule.

Choose the right kind of protection

Option What it helps with What it does not do Selection or installation notes
Basic power strip Adds electrical outlets. Does not necessarily suppress surges or provide outage power. A strip’s appearance or extra outlets do not establish that it has surge protection. Check its labeling and documentation.
Point-of-use surge protective device Limits transient surge voltage reaching connected equipment. Does not keep equipment running during an outage and cannot stop every electrical event. Check the product’s ratings, safety certification, load limits, and protection indicator. No single joule rating is established as universally right for every computer.
UPS Provides temporary battery power during an outage and can help bridge brief sags, giving time to save work or shut down. Many models also include surge protection. Does not provide unlimited runtime or guarantee complete protection. Match capacity to the connected load and desired runtime; follow the instructions for the exact model.
Whole-home SPD Adds a surge-protection layer at the electrical panel. Does not guarantee immunity to all events or necessarily eliminate the value of point-of-use protection. Have a qualified professional assess and install it. Local code and panel compatibility matter.
Portable phone power bank Keeps compatible small mobile devices charged during an outage. Does not suppress surges or serve as a UPS for plugged-in equipment. Charge it before an expected outage and check capacity and connector compatibility.

For a desktop or network setup, estimate the load that will be connected and decide how long it needs to run: a UPS is for brief continuity and orderly shutdown, not indefinite operation. For surge protection, confirm the product is actually a surge protective device rather than a plain strip. A whole-home device is a panel-level option, not a reason to ignore the instructions for equipment connected at the point of use.

Use strips and UPS units safely

  • Do not overload a power strip, surge protector, or UPS, and do not daisy-chain strips or surge protectors. Follow the product’s load limits and manufacturer instructions.
  • For APC Back-UPS and Smart-UPS products, Schneider Electric’s guidance recommends plugging the UPS directly into a wall receptacle, not into a power strip, and advises against connecting a strip or surge strip to the UPS output. Added strips can cause incorrect load reporting, overload, or a dropped load. Follow the manual for your exact UPS; this APC-specific advice should not be assumed to cover every UPS design.
  • Electrical power is not the only possible route for a surge: connected telecommunications and other lines may provide additional paths. Consider connected cable or data lines and ask the equipment maker or an electrician about protection for your installation.

Why protection is never absolute

A surge protector is designed to limit or divert transient overvoltage, not make equipment immune to every event. A UPS’s battery is for temporary power, and its protection features vary by model. A panel-level SPD adds another layer but does not establish that every connected device or line is protected in every circumstance. Keep backups, use equipment within its ratings, and disconnect sensitive devices when a storm or outage makes that the safer practical choice.
