For the principal Ghost Recon releases, play in release order: start with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon (2001), move through the early games and the Advanced Warfighter era, then play Future Soldier (2012), Wildlands (2017), and Breakpoint (2019). The big design shift came with Wildlands, which Ubisoft called the series’ first open-world title. That changed the scale and structure of missions, not the franchise’s tactical-shooter identity.

Ghost Recon games in principal release order

This is a guide to the principal releases and major milestones, not a complete catalog of expansions, platform-specific versions, or side entries. In particular, release schedules and design differences among platform versions of some older games are not established here.

  1. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon (2001): The series began with an elite Green Beret team in an Eastern European conflict. Ubisoft’s PC page gives its release date as November 13, 2001. The company later described the game as moving the action from tense indoor combat into outdoor war zones. Ubisoft’s original game page and Ubisoft’s series retrospective provide those details.
  2. Early expansions and Ghost Recon 2 era (2002–2005): Ubisoft’s 2009 corporate reference identifies Island Thunder (2002) and Summit Strike (2005) among the era’s milestones. These releases continued the series’ tactical military focus. The dates are selected milestones, not a complete list of every expansion or port. Ubisoft’s 2009 reference document records the named releases.
  3. Advanced Warfighter era (from 2006): Advanced Warfighter marks an important middle phase between the earlier tactical games and later installments. Ubisoft’s 2009 reference names it as a 2006 milestone; that date does not resolve the separate release schedules or design differences of platform versions.
  4. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (2012): This is a later pre-open-world installment. Ubisoft describes its setting as near-future and highlights advanced combat technology and weapons. See Ubisoft’s Future Soldier page.
  5. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands (2017): The structural turning point. In an announcement dated June 15, 2015, Ubisoft called it the franchise’s first open-world title and described a Bolivia setting with a four-player Ghost team. The announcement listed Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC. Ubisoft’s US store lists the standard edition’s release date as March 7, 2017. Read Ubisoft’s announcement and check the US store listing for current listing details. If you are choosing a copy, verify its platform and edition before buying.
  6. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint (2019): This continues the open-world direction. Ubisoft’s franchise page groups Breakpoint and Wildlands as its last two games, distinguished by vast open worlds and varied environments. Ubisoft’s US store lists the standard edition’s release date as October 4, 2019. See Ubisoft’s franchise page and the US store listing.

What changed when Ghost Recon went open world?

Mission-centered levels gave way to broad, explorable environments

The contrast is chiefly one of scale and structure. The earlier games are rooted in tactical-shooter missions, while Wildlands introduced a large open world; Breakpoint carried that approach forward. Ubisoft’s 2015 announcement described the new direction as “a massive, beautiful and living open world that reacts to players’ choices.” That statement announced the shift in 2015; the standard edition’s store release date for Wildlands is in 2017.

The tactical identity did not disappear

Ubisoft still describes Ghost Recon as a tactical shooter series with settings inspired by the real world. So “open world” describes how the later games structure their settings, not a clean break from the franchise’s tactical identity. The shift is best understood as tactical action playing out across much larger, more explorable environments.

How to choose a starting point

  • For the series’ origins: Start with the 2001 original, then follow the milestones in release order.
  • For the historical transition: Play a pre-open-world entry such as Future Soldier, followed by Wildlands, to compare the earlier era with the first open-world installment.
  • For an open-world entry: Choose Wildlands to begin with the installment Ubisoft identified as the first open-world game, or Breakpoint to play the next principal release in sequence.

Ubisoft’s US store lists Wildlands and Breakpoint, but store listings and regional availability can change. A listing does not establish that every edition or platform is currently available.

What this order does not cover

The list is deliberately limited to principal releases and selected milestones. It does not claim to enumerate every expansion, handheld or console side entry, port, or platform-specific version. For that reason, use it as a practical series overview rather than a definitive platform-by-platform chronology.
