To keep a powered medical device running during an outage, make a backup plan for that exact device before power fails: confirm compatible batteries or generator use with its manufacturer, agree on a treatment contingency with the clinician, and know where to go if backup power will not last. During an outage, follow the device’s emergency instructions, use only a confirmed power source, and get emergency help if someone depends on the device to stay alive.
Prepare a device-specific outage plan
There is no universal battery, adapter, or generator that can safely run every medical device. The device’s requirements and the patient’s care plan determine what will work. The FDA advises people who use home medical equipment to contact the device manufacturer or distributor about outage procedures and supported backup power options.
Record the information you may need quickly
- Device name and model, its power requirements, battery type, and manufacturer or distributor contact.
- Whether the manufacturer confirms battery or generator use, and any requirements for voltage, waveform, connector, adapter, or battery.
- The expected runtime under the actual device load, as confirmed by the manufacturer or calculated using its instructions.
- What to do if treatment stops, the minimum supplies needed, and which clinician or emergency contact to call.
- A destination to go if power will be unavailable longer than the confirmed backup runtime, plus a way to transport the person, device, medicines, and supplies.
The FDA’s power-outage guidance for medical devices recommends asking these device-specific questions rather than assuming that a generic backup will work.
Notify local responders and the utility
Tell your electric utility and local fire department that someone in the household relies on powered medical equipment. Ask what outage notification or local assistance options are available; services vary by location and are not a substitute for having a backup plan.

Keep supplies and contacts accessible
Store written instructions and emergency contacts where caregivers can find them, along with the backup supplies specified for the device. The CDC’s power-source checklist includes power banks and adapters as general preparedness supplies, but that does not establish compatibility with a particular medical device.
For insulin-pump users, the FDA recommends planning for spare batteries where applicable, spare pump parts, backup insulin and injection supplies, emergency contacts, and the storage requirements for insulin. The FDA’s insulin-pump information is a starting point; ask the treating clinician to determine any medication or dosing contingency. Do not improvise a dosing change from general outage advice.

Choose backup power only after checking compatibility
A battery, portable power station, generator, or adapter is an option only if the device documentation or manufacturer confirms it can be used with that exact model. Ask what output and connection it requires and how long the proposed setup will run under the device’s actual load. The available general guidance does not establish universal capacity or runtime figures.
| Option | What to verify | Key planning issue |
|---|---|---|
| Device battery or approved battery pack | Supported battery type, required accessories, and expected runtime from the manufacturer | Keep charged or replaceable batteries available as the device instructions specify. |
| Portable power station or power bank | Manufacturer approval, output, waveform, connector or adapter, and expected runtime at the device load | A general-purpose unit is not automatically compatible with medical equipment. |
| Generator | Whether the device can use generator power and any electrical requirements | Operate it outdoors, with an outdoor-rated extension cord and working carbon-monoxide alarms; plan fuel and safe access. |
| Relocation to a powered site | Where to go, how to get there, and how to transport the person, device, medicines, and supplies | Use this plan if safe backup power is unavailable or will not cover the outage. |
Compare options by confirmed compatibility, runtime under the real load, charging or fuel availability, safe operation, portability, evacuation needs, and maintenance. The CDC notes that people in the United States experience about four hours of power loss per year on average; this national average, reported on its Power Sources page dated April 18, 2024, does not predict the length of a particular outage.

What to do when the power goes out
- Follow the device’s emergency instructions. Use the plan agreed with the clinician and manufacturer. If a person depends on a device to keep them alive, the FDA advises seeking emergency services immediately.
- Switch only to a confirmed backup source. Do not try an unapproved battery, generator, adapter, or improvised connection. Check the equipment and cord for water; do not plug in wet equipment.
- Keep equipment dry and secure. Protect the device and supplies from water and contaminated conditions, and follow its instructions for safe handling.
- Relocate if the plan requires it. If backup power is not available or cannot safely last, go to the destination identified in advance. Where possible, contact local public health authorities about evacuation assistance before severe weather makes travel unsafe.
Use generators outdoors
Carbon monoxide from a generator can be fatal. The CDC’s power-outage safety guidance says: “Never use a generator or other gasoline-powered engines inside your home.” Keep the generator outdoors, use an outdoor-rated extension cord, and have a working battery-powered or battery-backup carbon-monoxide detector when it is in use. The CDC’s advice is dated August 26, 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect refrigerated medicines and supplies
Use each product’s own label and storage instructions; a cooler or cold pack does not establish safe storage for every medicine or supply. The FDA advises keeping refrigerator and freezer doors closed during an outage. It says most refrigerators and freezers maintain temperature for at least one day if unopened, but this general guidance does not guarantee that a particular appliance or product stayed within its required range.

If a product must be moved, maintain its labeled temperature using ice or dry ice only as appropriate to its instructions. Avoid freezing products that must not freeze. The CDC specifically warns that frozen insulin can break down; keep insulin cool, not frozen, and away from heat and sunlight. See the FDA’s refrigeration guidance for medical devices and supplies and the CDC’s advice on managing insulin in an emergency.

Check equipment and products after power returns
- Check that the device settings remain correct. Some devices may reset to a default mode after an interruption; use the manufacturer’s instructions if settings have changed.
- Do not reconnect cords or equipment that are wet or damaged.
- Check the temperature history or current temperature of refrigerated products if possible. If storage conditions may have exceeded the product’s labeled limits, consult its manufacturer, pharmacist, or clinician for product-specific guidance rather than deciding from outage duration alone.
