Start with your water test, not a filter label: find out which PFAS are present, then choose an exact model independently certified for reduction of those compounds. EPA recommends checking NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 listings, but notes that, as of April 2024, the standards it describes focused on PFOA and PFOS and did not establish reduction to EPA drinking-water-standard levels.

1. Find out which PFAS are in your water

If you use public water

Ask your water utility for its PFAS results and current guidance. EPA’s consumer guidance on private wells and drinking water describes how to obtain information about your water; public-water results are the best starting point for choosing treatment.

If you use a private well

Test regularly and consult your state or local health authority about results and next steps. EPA does not regulate private wells. If you arrange testing yourself, use a state-certified laboratory and EPA-developed methods.

Record which PFAS were measured and their levels. PFAS is a large chemical class, and different compounds can behave differently during treatment; one result does not stand in for every PFAS. Follow utility or state health advice for your measured situation.

2. Match the treatment to the compounds and the device

EPA identifies granular activated carbon (GAC), ion-exchange resin, and reverse osmosis (RO) as treatment technologies that can reduce PFAS. That is not a blanket endorsement of every carbon filter, resin product, or RO system. The important buying evidence is a PFAS-reduction certification for the exact model and the specific contaminant named in its listing.

Granular activated carbon

GAC captures contaminants as water passes through porous carbon. EPA describes it as one of the most studied PFAS treatments and says it works well for longer-chain compounds such as PFOA and PFOS. Shorter-chain PFBS and PFBA generally do not adsorb as well. Performance also depends on the carbon, bed depth, flow, temperature, and other constituents in the water, so a “carbon” label alone does not verify a PFAS claim.

Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher – Lead, Chlorine, PFOA/PFOS, Microplastics Filter, 10 Cup, 120 Gallon Filter Life - Filter Media Made in USA
  • Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
  • Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
  • Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
  • Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
  • Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.

EPA researcher Thomas Speth said GAC “can be 100 percent effective for a period of time,” depending on factors including carbon type and depth, flow rate, the PFAS involved, temperature, and organic matter and other constituents. This is conditional performance, not a promise for every home device.

Ion exchange

Anion-exchange resins attract negatively charged PFAS. Verify that the specific device has a PFAS-reduction listing and review its replacement instructions; the word “resin” by itself does not establish performance.

  • AFTER-SALE COMMITMENT: CuZn's backs the UC-200 quality and high filtration performance. Should any issues arise, we advise you contact CuZn support for swift response. NOTE: does not reduce TDS, which can only be performed by reverse osmosis

Reverse osmosis

RO pushes water through a membrane. EPA describes high-pressure membranes as highly effective for PFAS in the treatment research it summarizes, including shorter-chain compounds, but research on a treatment technology does not guarantee the performance of a particular retail system. Look for a PFAS-reduction claim on the exact model under NSF/ANSI 58. RO also requires filter and membrane changes and produces a separate concentrated wastewater stream.

3. Verify the certification listing

  1. Find the full model number, including any suffix that distinguishes a version or configuration.
  2. Look for a claim specifically naming PFAS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58. NSF/ANSI 58 is the standard for RO systems.
  3. Search the certifier’s product directory for that exact model. EPA points consumers to directories from CSA Group, IAPMO R&T, NSF, UL, and WQA.
  4. Confirm which PFAS the listing covers. A general reference to a standard, or an unsupported “PFAS removal” marketing statement, is not enough.

EPA’s consumer guidance says that, as of April 2024, the filter certification standards it described focused on PFOA and PFOS; they did not indicate that a filter would reduce those contaminants to the levels in EPA’s drinking-water standard. Check the current certifier directory before buying, because listings and standards can change.

4. Compare installation, upkeep, and total cost

Choose the installation format around where you need treated water and what your home can accommodate. For drinking and cooking, point-of-use treatment can focus the system on those uses; a pitcher, faucet attachment, under-sink unit, and whole-home installation differ in convenience and capacity. Do not treat the form factor as proof of PFAS performance.

EPA-described system type Approximate purchase range Important operating trade-offs
GAC or ion exchange $20–$1,000, excluding maintenance costs, in EPA’s consumer information accessed in 2026. Cartridges or media need replacement. Performance depends on the specific PFAS, device, and water conditions.
Reverse osmosis $150–$1,000, excluding maintenance costs, in EPA’s consumer information accessed in 2026. Requires filter and membrane replacement and produces a separate concentrated wastewater stream.

These are EPA approximate purchase ranges, not a current market survey; the agency’s broader estimate across filter types and installation formats is $20 to more than $1,000, excluding maintenance. Compare the unit price with replacement cartridge or membrane costs, the maker’s replacement interval, installation needs, capacity, and water use. Filter life is not universal: it depends on the model, use, and water conditions.

Follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule. EPA warns that missing it can increase exposure risk. RO’s wastewater stream and the disposal and replacement requirements of any system belong in the household’s operating-cost comparison.

5. Use the right timeframe for public-water regulation

EPA’s regulation page, updated May 18, 2026, says public water systems must complete initial PFAS monitoring by 2027 and implement solutions for exceedances by 2029. These are the timelines on that page, not a reason to wait for treatment if your utility or health authority advises action based on your water results.
