Choose Splinter Cell if you want focused, stealth-led missions built around observation, planning, and avoiding detection. Choose Ghost Recon Wildlands if you would rather explore a large open world, tackle objectives in different ways, and have the option of co-op. That is a play-style fit, not a claim that one series is better or easier.

How do Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon play differently?

What matters to you Splinter Cell Ghost Recon
Core emphasis Stealth-led action centered on Sam Fisher, an elite covert agent, according to Ubisoft’s series description. A tactical-shooter series set in environments inspired by the real world, according to Ubisoft’s series description.
World and mission feel For the series’ original design approach, Ubisoft developers described observation, planning, and a linear structure in a 2021 interview about the remake. That is historical design intent, not confirmation of the remake’s current status or final design. Ubisoft specifically describes the newer Wildlands and Breakpoint as vast open-world entries.
Freedom of approach Best fit if the challenge you want is slipping past enemies, using gadgets, and solving a situation without being detected. Ubisoft’s 2015 announcement lists stealth, distraction, tactical, and frontal-assault approaches for Wildlands.
Playing with others Do not assume older games’ online or co-op features work: Ubisoft flags those features as no longer functional for Chaos Theory and Blacklist on their listings. Wildlands was announced for solo play or co-op with up to three friends. That announcement does not verify present-day online availability for every platform or edition.

Which should you play first?

Choose Splinter Cell for concentrated stealth

Start with Splinter Cell if you enjoy watching patrols, thinking through a route, using gadgets, and making progress without attracting attention. Ubisoft’s 2021 remake interview describes the intended series ideal as “be a ghost,” with observation and creative problem solving at its center. The interview describes an early stage of the remake project; it does not establish a release date or current availability.

Blacklist is one example of the series’ stealth-shooter format, while Chaos Theory is another classic entry. Ubisoft lists the original PC release dates as February 18, 2003 for Splinter Cell, March 29, 2005 for Chaos Theory, and August 20, 2013 for Blacklist. These dates identify the games, not a ranking of which one is best for beginners.

Choose Ghost Recon Wildlands for exploration and optional co-op

Start with Wildlands if you want to roam a broad environment, approach objectives from different directions, and decide whether to play solo or with friends. Ubisoft announced solo play or co-op with up to three friends and described several approaches to missions. Those details come from its 2015 announcement, so check the exact platform and edition if online play is essential.

#1 Best Overall
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist
  • OWN YOUR PLAY STYLE: Splinter Cell Blacklist builds on the stealth roots of the franchise, while exploring new directions to embrace the realms of action and adventure. Players can define their personal play styles and be rewarded for those choices.
  • TOOLS OF THE TRADE: Fans of stealth will be happy to make the most of Sam's sneaking abilities to abduct and carry enemies, while Killing in Motion allows the player to strike with surgical precision by marking and executing multiple enemies in one fluid motion.
  • SPIES VS. MERCS RETURNS: Spies vs. Mercs is back with a new take on asymmetrical gameplay. Players will be able to face off in teams of 4 while creating their very own Spy or Merc according to their playstyles via thorough customization elements. The original Classic Spies vs. Mercs experience also makes its long awaited comeback for the fans.
  • COOP: Co-Op is back and bigger than ever with 14 maps & 4 mission types. While you play you also earn in-game currency and unlock additional weapons or gadgets via specialized missions assigned by Grim, Briggs, Charlie and Kobin.

Ubisoft identifies both Wildlands and Breakpoint as open-world entries; that description should not be generalized to every game in the Ghost Recon franchise.

How to make the choice based on your preferences

  • You want stealth above all: Pick Splinter Cell.
  • You want a large world to explore: Pick Ghost Recon Wildlands.
  • You want multiple ways to handle objectives: Wildlands is the clearer fit based on Ubisoft’s description of its approach options.
  • You want to play with friends: Wildlands was designed for co-op, but verify that online features are available for the specific platform and edition you plan to use.
  • You want a focused, linear-style stealth experience: Choose a Splinter Cell entry, while treating the 2021 remake interview as historical design intent rather than a current product announcement.

Neither franchise is established as universally easier for new players. The better first game depends on whether you find stealth planning or open-world tactical freedom more appealing.

Check the platform and version before buying

Current store availability, backward compatibility, and edition details are not established here. Before purchasing, check your platform’s current store listing for the exact game and version. If co-op matters, confirm the listing or current platform information for online functionality rather than relying on an older announcement. Ubisoft’s listings for Chaos Theory and Blacklist say their online/co-op features are no longer functional, so do not buy either expecting those modes to work.
