Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBack up and verify anything you want to keep, then use the device’s built-in erase or reset process and complete the account, activation-lock, and SIM steps required for its next owner. The exact process depends on whether you have an iPhone or iPad, Android device, Windows laptop, or Mac. A consumer reset is a practical handoff step, but it is not automatically proof of formal or certified data sanitization.
Before you erase: protect your data and prepare the device
Erasing is destructive. Make a backup first, then check that you can access the files, photos, messages, and other data you need from that backup. Apple recommends backing up before erasing an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. On Android, data saved to your Google Account may be restored, but a factory reset removes apps and their locally stored data. See Apple’s backup guidance and Google’s Android factory-reset guidance.
- Transfer wanted data to your replacement device or make a cloud or local backup, then verify it before proceeding.
- For a Windows laptop, locate and save the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. You may need it to access encrypted data before the reset.
- For an Android device, make sure you know the Google Account username and password and the screen-lock credential. Google says a recently changed Google Account password may require a 24-hour wait before factory reset.
- Check your carrier or trade-in recipient’s instructions. Remove a physical SIM and any removable memory card if present; the built-in reset may not remove either.
You do not need to buy a separate backup drive if you already have a verified cloud or local backup.
Erase an iPhone or iPad
- Back up and transfer your data. Apple also recommends checking Parts and Service History for an unfinished repair before handing over an iPhone.
- On the device, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. Enter the device passcode or Apple Account credentials if prompted. See Apple’s iPhone erase instructions or iPad erase instructions.
- Follow the eSIM prompt. Choose whether to keep or delete the cellular plan according to your carrier and transfer plans. If you delete the eSIM, Apple says the carrier must reactivate cellular service for a new owner.
- Allow the erase to finish. Apple says erasing turns off Find My and Activation Lock, which helps remove a key barrier to the next owner’s setup.
If you are moving from iPhone to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage using Apple’s iMessage deregistration page. Apple also advises removing the old iPhone or iPad from your trusted-device list. If the device is no longer with you, Apple says to try a remote erase through Find Devices if it was lost or stolen; a remote erase does not replace checking the device and its accessories during a physical trade-in.

Erase an Android phone or tablet
- Back up wanted data and confirm you can sign in to the Google Account associated with the device. If you recently changed that account’s password, account for Google’s possible 24-hour wait before resetting.
- On most devices, start the factory reset in Settings. Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and Android version, so follow the maker’s device-specific instructions. Google’s factory-reset guide explains the general approach.
- If Settings is inaccessible, some devices support a reset using hardware buttons and recovery mode. The button sequence is manufacturer-specific; do not assume one model’s instructions apply to another.
- Before handing it over, remove the Google Account and any manufacturer account or device-finding lock as required by the device maker or recipient. Check the trade-in provider’s requirements.
If you are sending an Android device to Apple for trade-in, Apple specifically advises signing out of Android accounts first. See Apple’s trade-in guidance.
Erase a Windows laptop
- Back up and verify your files. Make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC, select Remove everything, and enable Clean data when donating, selling, or recycling the laptop. Microsoft’s Reset your PC instructions cover the available options.
- Choose Cloud download to fetch a fresh Windows copy, or Local reinstall to use files already on the computer. Microsoft says the local option may not include the latest updates.
- Let the reset complete. It may take time, and the screen can remain black for a long period; Microsoft warns against forcibly restarting during the process.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s support notice. The menu path above is for current Windows Settings; Windows 10 interfaces may differ.

Erase a Mac laptop
Use Erase Assistant if the Mac has Apple silicon, or an Intel processor and the Apple T2 Security Chip, and runs macOS Monterey 12 or later. Apple’s Mac erase instructions identify the supported workflow and alternatives for other models.
- Back up the Mac, for example with Time Machine, and verify that the backup is usable.
- Open System Settings (or System Preferences on some macOS versions) and start Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the Erase Assistant prompts.
- Let the assistant complete. It removes user accounts, data, and volumes, signs out of Apple services, and turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
- When the Mac restarts to Setup Assistant, leave it at that screen for the next owner. Do not create a new account for them.
If Erase All Content and Settings is unavailable, use Apple’s model-specific erase and reinstall route rather than applying instructions for a different Mac.

- Organize Screws by Step: Keep tiny screws, brackets, shields, covers, fasteners, and small metal parts grouped as you remove them. The magnetic surface helps reduce lost parts and keeps your repair workflow cleaner during teardown and reassembly.
- Help Avoid Screw Mix-Ups: Modern electronics often use similar-looking screws in different lengths. Use the grid to map screws to their original locations, making reassembly easier and helping reduce the risk of placing screws in the wrong spot.
- Writable Dry-Erase Surface: Write notes, number disassembly steps, label sections, or sketch a simple component layout directly on the mat. The included marker and eraser let you update notes as the repair progresses and reset the surface for the next project.
- 20-Section Repair Layout: Separate parts by module, step, or device area—battery cover, camera bracket, logic board shield, hinge cover, fan screws, controller shell screws, and more. Useful for phone, laptop, tablet, watch, camera, drone, and game console repair.
- Compact Repair Bench Essential: The 9.84 x 7.87 in mat fits beside your device on a desk, workbench, or mobile repair station without taking over the whole workspace. Includes magnetic project mat, dry-erase marker, and eraser. Not suitable for children aged 13 and under.
What “securely erased” does—and does not—mean
A built-in reset is the appropriate consumer handoff process for these devices, but do not treat every reset as a verified purge or certified sanitization. NIST defines media sanitization as rendering access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort in SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published September 26, 2025. That is a broader standard for media sanitization, not a guarantee attached to every consumer reset.
Microsoft explicitly says its Windows consumer data-erasure feature “does not meet government and industry data erasure standards.” Its guidance says the feature makes recovery harder, not that it certifies a laptop as sanitized. If the device held sensitive organizational data, follow the organization’s approved, media-specific sanitization process and retain any required records rather than relying only on a consumer reset.
